The start of the second Industrial Revolution was also the start for the push of imperialism throughout the country. The decision of taking care of another country because of the opinion that they were not “civilized” was a motive for many of the United States leaders. Leaders included President Theodore Roosevelt, William Jennings Bryan, and President William McKinley. The imperialist group was strong but they had much push back from anti-imperialist. The anti-imperialist included Jane Addams and Mark Twain. Many people pushed for overseas expansion in belief they were spreading civilization on countries that were not comparable to the United States in their point of view. Others believed that the United States needed to put the focus on …show more content…
The U.S. government was made up of those whom supported United States imperialism including well known presidents Theodore Roosevelt and President William McKinley. President William McKinley had described to a church delegation his decisions in the Philippines in 1899 and said “…to educate the Filipinos and uplift and civilize and Christianize them by god’s grace do the very we best us could…” (Doc 3). The imperialist group wanted to believe they were helping countries, while only believing in their own opinion that the other countries were uncivilized and struggling. President Theodore Roosevelt had also thought the same as President McKinley. Roosevelt had said in his speech, “The Strenuous Life”, “…I have even scanter patience with those who make a pretense of humanitarianism to hide and cover their timidly” (Doc 5). Imperialism easily grew through the strong leaders of the United …show more content…
When William Jennings Bryan was campaigning for presidency in 1900 he said in one of his speeches “Our experiment in colonialism has been unfortunate” (Doc 6). He simply and strongly believed that it would be a bad idea for America to take control of grounds that were not theirs. Satirical Magazines had also made its way into American culture and opinions of Anti- Imperialist were not held back. In 1904 a satirical magazine had published an article from Puck, (Doc 7), was just an ironic visual that America may have been stretching its limits too far. Lastly Women had begun to rise in the social culture of America. Women like Jane Addams, who accomplished many things such as the Hull House. Jane Addams like William Jennings Bryan was an anti-imperialist, she had explained how imperialism had a negative effect on America’s young children, “ The little children on the street played war… the barbaric instinct asserts itself.” (Doc 4) . Jane Addams was a feminists as well as an anti-imperialist. She was concerned for the affects it has on the children at the time. Anti-imperialism was on the rise just as imperialism with strong support of a wider social range of
Many Americans thought occupying foreign countries, like the Philippines after the Spanish American War, was a bad idea because it contradicts the American values of equality found in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. (Doc D) However, a majority of America sided with people like Senator Albert J. Beveridge who believed people were chosen by God to expand into China and the Philippines to open more Asian markets. (Doc E) This was a continuation of past expansionism because acquiring land for money Manifest Destiny have been motives for expansionism for
During the late eighteen hundreds a few decades after the civil war the United States had fallen into a great depression and was lacking resources and economical power. The need for economical growth was crucial. The united states needed to gain economical power so that we could trade with countries overseas and to show everyone how much power we really had. Social Darwinism started because countries were trying to gain more power this influenced the United States to try and gain more power than most other countries. But “All the united states wanted was for our neighboring countries to be stable, orderly and prosperous.
As America entered the Gilded Age, its urban population grew, nativists resisted minorities, government corruption was rampant, and immigrant populations increased substantially (Shi and Tindall 626-644). Government corruption was exemplified by the patronage system, under which loyal supporters of politicians were given government jobs (Shi and Tindall 641). Most of the immigrants from this period were from southern and eastern European countries, such as Russia, Poland, Greece, and Italy, and were judged as inferior by many Americans because of their cultural differences (Shi and Tindall 630). Immigrants also caused tension during WWI because of their lingering loyalties to nations on either side of the conflict (Chapter 21 Overview).
In 1896, the imperialists of America got their chance to shine when William McKinley became president. The imperialists wanted to expand U.S. trade into other countries in hopes of soon acquiring the countries as colonies.
Gail Bederman from the university of Notre Dame claims that Theodore Roosevelt, who was the greatest supporter of the attack on Spain and Philippines, had it engineered by both race and gender. These two concepts made him perceive imperialism as being the next stage of growth in a healthy republic. To him, expansion and domination were necessary if America was to civilize the world. For people like Theodore Roosevelt, as the United States advanced, the democratic vision was also progressing (Bederman, 1996). Theodore Roosevelt, just elected to office in 1882, felt that he was very important and had many ambitions.
He believes that only the strenuous life can play great role in the prosperity and welfare of the individuals and nation as well. Practically, Roosevelt was an ardent supporter of imperialism and wanted America to play integral role in world affairs and politics. This speech also depicts his policy of interventionism and imperialism. Roosevelt defends American imperialism by taking America’s national interests into consideration. However, his imperialist approach in foreign policies raises many questions for the audience sitting outside the borders of America.
United States Imperialism in the late 19th century was very selfish time. Many people in that time, debated about whether are not benefiting our country was the right way or the wrong way. The motiving factors that impacted our imperialism are economic, military, and cultural. These factors impacted the American Imperialism from 1890-194 by having control over weaker territories meeting our expanding needs.
Before the 20th century the United States was an isolationist nation but around the late 19th century America decided to convert into an imperialist power. They had numerous reasons to shift into being an imperialist nation. America didn’t want to begin imperializing to settle and live in the nations they were taking over, they already had America for that reason, they wanted to adopt these nations for what they had to offer, which was many things. America saw an opportunity to improving their nation and took it. Even if there were many causes for America to imperialize, three of them stood out the most.
And lastly the desire for a new frontier to settle in order to maintain America’s identity and prosperity. All three of the examples: economically, politically/military, and culturally can simply explain why and how America became an imperialist nation in the late
American imperialism is economically, socially, and politically damaging to countries, as well as costly for America. Furthermore, it infringes upon national sovereignty and the right to self-governance. Historical cases have shown the detrimental repercussions America has repeatedly caused. The few cases of success should not undermine the calamitous effects American neo-imperialism has caused. The United States should cede its colonies and stop intervening in the affairs of other nations.
“Why, by interweaving our destiny with that of any part of Europe, entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils of European ambition, rival ship, interest, humor, or caprice? It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world... we may safely trust to temporary alliances for extraordinary emergencies.” This quote from George Washington in his 1796 farewell address describes the opinion of the United States for a majority of its history. Americas public opinion and national policy had the purpose of minimizing the risk of entering another war.
Kylie Aprilante Conroy World History 23 January 2023 New Imperialism occurred when an industrialized nation takes control of other nations, lands, or territories. The Industrial Revolution assisted with imperialism because of advances in technology which helped European nations to spread their colonies all over less-advanced regions of the world. European imperialism accelerated between 1870 and 1920, following the Industrial Revolution, due to various economic, political, and social forces. The economic, political, and social forces most responsible for new imperialism were European powers that sought colonies for their natural resources, nationalism, and social Darwinism.
The United States of America was torn in the year of 1898 along with two of its most influential citizens. In the late 1800s and early 1900s the United States started to become more involved in foreign affairs and the outside world. One of the ways the United States began getting more involved was through imperialism. The thought of imperialism made many people around the United States want to voice their opinions on what America should do. Two of the people who had voiced their opinion were Andrew Carnegie and Albert Beveridge.
Essay One: Imperialism Flies circle great black lumps as the moist air ravages the corpses. Dried blood soaked into the ground after faceless soldiers brutally destroyed its owners’ lives. These were the stories in the newspapers, the movies, and the films. Horrified by these crimes against humanity, the American public was spurred into action against the Spanish oppressors. the United States invaded Cuba in 1898 to pursue humanitarian efforts.
Colonialism and Imperialism affected our world both positively and negatively. On one hand, Imperialism has often been linked with racial segregation, manipulation, and hardship. On the other, it has been said that many colonial powers contributed much in terms of schools, roads, railways, and much more. Whether this time period was constructive or harmful, it has played a large part in shaping our lives today. European Imperialism started long before the 1800’s.
