Beowulf is considered a classic Anglo-Saxon warrior because he has the physical abilities and strength that create a good warrior. To accompany his physical abilities, Beowulf is courageous in his battles, believing that his fate is already determined by
Jamila Bethea English 4 Joyner December 2015 Beowulf’s Heroic Qualities In the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf, Beowulf is not only a warrior, but he is also an epic hero. An epic hero is someone who is admired for his/her hard work. Beowulf is considered a hero because he displays strength and courage the battles against Grendel, Grendel’s mom, and the dragon. The defeat of the monsters and the dragon allowed Beowulf to transition into a king. First, he battled with Grendel Beowulf showed the heroic quality of being strong.
Than why isn’t Odysseus a good leader? Odysseus is a good leader. As a true king, Odysseus demonstrates sacrifice as well as honor to his faithful companions. He also exhibits determination to continue the everlasting journey to return home. Now, some may call him a foolish, selfish, and unethical man who does not deserve the title of a leader, much less a king.
Many believe that “that heroism comes naturally to some, and others can learn altruism using methods such as compassion” (Banham 312). Most heroes are commonly described as handsome and strong, almost as if they look like a God; and because of that, some are even treated as if they are royalty. Unfortunately, some heroes abuse their fame and are overtaken with self-pride or hubris. Even though both protagonists in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Beowulf vary in personality, both characters are defined as heroes based on their heroic deeds. In the story Beowulf, the hero is described as a leader who risks his life for the good of his people and kingdom, someone who shows bravery, strength, and exemplifies a great amount of generosity and love for his people.
Beowulf and Odysseus are two famous epic heroes in the texts Beowulf and The Odyssey. They both go through the “Hero’s Journey,” and display many characteristics of a hero. Beowulf, however, better fits the qualities of an epic hero due to his unselfish personality, his fearlessness, and his nobility. One reason Beowulf is the better epic hero is because his intentions and motives were selfless. He always fought to save the people, not for glory or treasures.
Being remembered, in death, is a very immense part of the Anglo-Saxon code, and with that, Beowulf seemed to believe that defeating Grendel’s mother would grant him more fame than he had previously received. As explicated in the epic, “So fame comes to the men who mean to win it and care about nothing else!” (Lines 507-509) Beowulf cared about his name, and with that, he knew it was in him to fight for that name and to make it heard through his life and generations afterward. After understanding what it means to be truly glorified, and what it means to be remembered, years after one’s death with fame, one can recognize the reasoning behind Beowulf’s actions. Beowulf embodied the ideals of the Vikings in the fact that he chose to fight for another kingdom, protect his sacred name, and fight for his glory and
Beowulf is an epic poem written many centuries ago about a legendary Anglo-Saxon figure named Beowulf. The epic tells of his struggles and battles as well as his life story. Beowulf is an example of a stereotypical Anglo-Saxon hero; this is shown through the qualities of his character, such as his physical strength and his moral fiber. Beowulf demonstrates the qualities that are deemed as important by the Anglo-Saxon people, such as compassion, strength, honor, glory, and courage. These qualities in Beowulf can be used as lessons that can be transferred to modern life; these lessons, such as the importance of integrity, loyalty, and courage, are still applicable to everyday life in the modern world.
This makes us realize, George, being a person who seems like he doesn’t have enough patience and tolerance, looks like he would easy murder Lennie years before, but he did have this special bond, apprehension. To illustrate, if you have the opportunity to slip out from your duty, the biggest duty, many people would do it, but George didn’t, Why? He did care and love his innocent friend, with his heart. In summary, killing Lennie is an example of the deep care George had for Lennie. Even with their differences and disagreements, each of them had this enormous respect and affection for each other.
Throughout the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf, problems arouse and a warrior steps up and defeats the enemy, but is that a definition of a true warrior? Aside from the ability to fight and kill, a warrior should have more significant values than that. He shall attain the values of loyalty and liberality to be considered a true warrior. In the poem Beowulf, the presence of loyalty and liberality heighten the quality of an Anglo-Saxon hero by showing true commitment to the warrior’s path opposed to others who do not show it. Although loyalty and liberality elevate a warrior’s quality throughout Beowulf, there are many absences of the two values in the poem.
