Do you remember Luke Skywalker? He was the son of Anakin Skywalker (or Darth Vader) and was a vital part in defeating the Galactic Empire. Beowulf defeated Grendel as a heroic deed for those who feared the monster. He was like Luke Skywalker because he defeated evil for the better of the common people. Both of these heroes display similar characteristics because their quest was the same. Beowulf displays a strong sense of superhuman strength based on his actions. Beowulf’s objective for his quest is to defeat Grendel and his mother. He eventually defeats both of them but is killed while fighting the dragon. Although, while he was battling Grendel’s mother, he defeated her by using force instead of a weapon. “He raised his arms and seized her by the shoulder; anger doubled his strength, he threw her to the floor” (54). This was what Beowulf did to Grendels mother. He grabbed her shoulders and threw her to the ground. Then he took the giant sword from …show more content…
In the series, Star Wars, there is the deadliest weapon that all jedis are possessed with and that is the force. The force is how the jedis would move objects from one place to another without having to lift it or to break something down to get passed a barrier. Skywalker didn’t learn how to use the force until later in life. His father, Anakin, took 12-13 years to learn how to use the force; whereas Luke, it only took roughly a week. Luke uses the force to save the Rebels from the Death Star’s attack. When he is being attacked by Vader and the Empire, he trusted his feeling to use the force and fired the shot which killed the two TIE Fighters assisting Vader. This sent Vader floating into space where he couldn’t defend the Death Star anymore. He then blew up the Death Star with one shot and saved the Rebels. There is a big similarity between Beowulf and Luke Skywalker and it is that they both do what they had to do to save those who they cared
He was taught by his mother. But Beowulf killed him and his mother so didnt accomplished anything. The similarities between them is that both kill, and destroy the Galaxy. The differences between them were that Darth Vader didn't kill every night ,like Grendel
How does Beowulf’s faith and confidence change as these battles unfold and what might these changes signify? In each battle with Grendel, Grendel’s mother and the dragon, Beowulf had shown different strength, motivation and goals. Beowulf’s faith and confidence changes when he fights these three characters and these signify changes means Beowulf is getting old which means he didn’t have the same strength as he had during the fight with Grendel. In the battle with Grendel, Beowulf’s strength is so strong that Grendel has a hard time fighting him.
Not only have we seen brute strength, honorable courage, and admirable loyalty shine through beowulf, Beowulf also possess a great trait not many others have; his will to fight to the death, or self sacrifice. Not once throughout the story did Beowulf ever turn down a battle. Not once did he fear or flee his enemy. Not once did he ever give up even if death had him by the throat causing his mind to flood nothing but fearful thoughts and feelings throughout his body. Every battle Beowulf fought, he fought as if it was his last and that is what truly makes him the great warrior he is.
Christopher Reeve (AKA the 1978 superman) said that, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles”. Both Beowulf and Modern day heroes are similar in that way in that they fight for the common good of people. That quote from Christopher Reeves on what a modern day hero is, also applies to the epic hero qualities that Beowulf has. Similarly Beowulf and a modern day hero defeat an evil so that good can prevail. Some examples are, Beowulf Slaying Grendel and Grendel's mother to save the land of the Danes, and soldiers fighting enemies that threaten the lives of a country, and police officers putting criminals behind bars.
When Beowulf hears of this, he travels to Heorot to help Hrothgar. In the end, Beowulf kills Grendel and his mother, but is slain by a new monster, the Firedrake while protecting his kingdom. In the Star Wars trilogy, Luke Skywalker, who was once an ordinary farm boy on the planet Tatooine, ends up joining the Rebellion against the Galactic empire. His father, Darth Vader, asks Luke to join him so they can rule the Galaxy. In the end, Luke ends up defeating his father and his master, the Emperor, bringing peace to the galaxy once again.
Beowulf risked his life multiple times by battling Grendel and Grendel’s mother to save the people of Denmark. He also embarks on a battle with a dragon as an old man ascending on the Geats Throne. Each battle Beowulf fought has all been for the safety of his people. Although the Knight did not battle as a deed for his people, he also is viewed as a humble person his battles were for a purpose greater than himself. The knight never talks about his brave and valorous deeds.
Compare/Contrast Essay Beowulf is an epic hero, who is a strong and powerful man who comes from Sweden to Denmark to help a village that is being attacked by a man-eating monster named Grendel. Arthur, is a romantic hero who is the courageous king of Camelot who is a devoted leader and will do anything to protect his kingdom and people. Even though Beowulf and Arthur are two different heroes, they both share similar traits such as devoted followers, the use of magical weapons, and courageous traits throughout the story. Both epic and romantic heroes had devoted followers that helped them throughout battles. Beowulf was very strong, but when the people of Denmark thought he needed help.
This proves that he is strong and brave because no one else could kill Grendel let alone face him. Beowulf kills Grendel with his bare hands and without armor on. Other warriors could not even kill him with a sword and armor. “Beowulf’s intention to fight Grendel with only his strength proves that he carries the characteristics of a true hero”(Hailey).
Beowulf Essay One of the ways Beowulf proves himself as an epic hero is by performing extraordinary or superhuman deeds. One example from the book is when he travels to the land of the Danes to kill a beast that has killed all of Hrothgar’s (king of the Danes) men. The beast name is Grendel and he has been going to the Heriot Hall and killing men every night that he goes there. Beowulf battled Grendel with just his hands and during the fight Beowulf grabbed the beast’s arm and started twisting it, “He (Grendel) twisted in pain, and the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder snapped, muscle and bone split and broke.
Beowulf is an epic hero because of his strength. His strength isn’t the same as an ordinary man, “He twisted in pain and the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder snapped muscle and on split and broke” (lines 337-340). No ordinary man would be
As a payment to the king of the Danes, he decides to fight the dragon, just as he fought Grendel. Then he was a warrior and now he is a king responsible for his people. Beowulf’s decision is courageous but inappropriate for a king. His foolish but courageous decision causes him to die in the end. Before he fought the mighty dragon, he said “I’ve never known fear; as a youth I fought in endless battles.
What qualifies a person to be called a hero? Officially a hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Most people think of a superhero, like Batman or Spiderman, or someone closer to them such as their mother or their life-saving doctor. Heroes tend to be the main character in a story. Beowulf and Odysseus are two famous epic heroes in the texts Beowulf and The Odyssey.
Beowulf and King Arthur are both portrayed as heroes and someone to look up to. Some similarities are both of them are very brave. They are also both very compelling leaders in their own respective ways. Even with their similarities they have differences in their heroic qualities such as Beowulf not really being a human in the sense that he can do superhuman things and King Arthur being a normal human being. It's also interesting to note that King Arthur was more of a hero for his character whereas Beowulf was more of a hero in the sense that he slays monsters and dragons.
Beowulf went through so much to prove he was worthy enough to protect their kingdom and defeat Grendel. The story Beowulf was a great story to read and a great movie to watch; however, the battles were very eye catching and had a lot of extravagant and heroic doings of Beowulf. The first scenario that I’m going to discuss in the movie and story of Beowulf is The Battle with Grendel. In the movie Grendel attacked Beowulf in the Heriot while everyone was dancing and singing.
As has been noted, many of Beowulf 's characteristics are also shared by traditional epic heroes. He 's brave and never "cowers", defeats previously unbeatable monsters, comes from nobility, and has incredible superhuman strength. Beowulf can be compared to any other epic hero, and the similarities found between them will be never ending. However, there are other characteristics that the king of the Geats possesses which make him be very different from most epic heroes. First, there is the issue with Beowulf 's lack of a moral compass.
