Beowulf is a superior hero, he is an honorable man and a selfless being who prioritizes his comrade above anything. Beowulf displays traits that are important in the 21st century. Beowulf prioritizes other people before himself. When he killed Grendel, he didn’t do it for the prize but he did it for the respect of his men and the honor. Beowulf is a despicable leader that is able to lead his men to victory like the time they hunted and took down Grendel.
What qualifies a person to be called a hero? Officially a hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Most people think of a superhero, like Batman or Spiderman, or someone closer to them such as their mother or their life-saving doctor. Heroes tend to be the main character in a story. Beowulf and Odysseus are two famous epic heroes in the texts Beowulf and The Odyssey.
With those three qualities you can very much fit Beowulf into a hero mold. Of course every hero has to have other qualities, as Beowulf does, like Loyalty, Courage, Smarts, and Patience’s all that can clearly be seen in some way or manor in the epic story Beowulf. So, while Beowulf is different from other, more sought after, traditional heroes such as say Superman or Captain America, he is still a hero in the eyes of others and has many of the characteristic that would be seen in a traditional
Everyone who reads the story can easily see that he is a strong, powerful hero-type that saves a community from a monster. However, if Barney Stinson read that same story, he would come up with the same conclusion that I had: Beowulf is a bloodthirsty, vainglorious superhuman who values killing and fame more than the saving of a community or the vanquishing of a terrorizing
• I’ve learned in this unit, three universal characteristics of a hero. One characteristic is some type of special powers not necessarily things like super strength or Flying but hospitality and friendliness or the will to help others could be considered special powers or something even greater to save the day. Also, hero's lineage is often noble or linked to the gods meaning their family history is a heroic one. Lastly Hero's tending to be adventurous and strong they and often times are born this way. 2.
Heros have courage. The courage of heroes is seen many times throughout Beowulf and The Canterbury Tales. Courage is a hard trait to describe, but it is even harder to actually have true courage. Beowulf certainly shows courage throughout the book, and he is the hero of the book. One such example of him showing courage
He risks his life and is courageous because he fights off the monsters. He is goes the extra mile for Hrothgar by going to kill Grendel's mother and the dragon. This is what makes a hero a hero. The first commemoration asked by Beowulf to have done is to have a tomb made for his body.
Their similarities are found in the symbolic nature their battles, the characteristics of being an epic hero and even the way they pass on leadership. When Beowulf battles Grendel, it is closely similar to how Superman’s fight with General Zod is shown. Both Zod and Grendel want to terrorize the sacred place that the heroes, Superman and Beowulf, want to protect. Another similarity would be that both defeated their threats with bare hand handed combat because of the immense strength both Beowulf and Superman had. Though they have different personalities, what both share is that both are honorable, brave and determined to push to the end of the mission without
Here, Wiglaf proves himself the better man because he has honor while the others, who willingly abandoned their King in battle, clearly do not. Lastly, Beowulf and Wiglaf both show outstanding loyalty throughout the piece. All of Beowulf’s actions are clearly motivated by loyalty, starting with his decision to help the Danes.
Another example would be on pg. 39 in the article “About Beowulf”, he was described as a young warrior of great strength and courage” fighting off Grendel, a “bloodthirsty foe”. This representation gives a vivid characterization of Beowulf which also is a common stereotype in other heroes in modern films such Batman, Spiderman, Superman etc.… In addition, they are usually described as strong and full of courage (Simon, par 2-10, Giles par 2). Also this representation shows how the hero in medieval romantic literature takes on an enormous challenge just to help other people which is also a common stereotype of heroes in modern film because they take it upon themselves to save the world.
The odds seem unlikely for a regular man; however, Beowulf is not like most men. Another trait of Beowulf includes his loyalty to his friends and family. Beowulf leaves his country to travel to an unknown land to defeat a monster who could kill him. He has the loyalty to this country which he has not even stepped foot on it. A couple of years after Grendel’s death, he becomes friends with the Danish king.
What is a hero? A hero is a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities. There are many people who meet the characteristics of a hero, but Chris McCandless is not one of them. There are many reasons that prove why McCandless does not meet the characteristics of a hero and there is many other people who do meet the criteria of a hero. My idea of a hero is a someone who takes on large tasks and shows great bravery in his/her character.
In today's modern society, we see more and more heroes in our everyday lives. Some people may think of a hero as someone that touched their life in a positive manner while others think a hero as someone that saved lives like Christian F Schilt, a soldier who managed to evacuate wounded marines while under fire. Beowulf and Schilt are perfect example of heroes since their loyalty, honor, and courage are undoubtedly heroic who saved the day for the betterment of society. Beowulf's valiant duties and overall courageous are due to his wanting to better his peers and society that he lives in. Throughout the epic, Beowulf fights demonic monsters like Grendel who takes lives with no remorse.
Hero’s are everywhere in this world sometimes they're around you other times they are far away, but everyone has a different hero. When we see a hero most people look up to that person because they know that they have done something good for someone. A hero’s place in society can be all over the world due to their different senses, but most of them will know when something bad is going to happen or when they know that you will need their help to fight mankind. A hero is someone that you look up too because you know that they do the right thing.
“In Anglo-Saxon culture and literature, to be a hero was to be a warrior. A hero had to be strong, intelligent, and courageous” (Dogra 79). Furthermore, he had to be an honorable warrior who did not cower at the thought of an impossible battle. Rather, he trudged forward, prepared to the rattle cages of the strongest, evilest, and most damnable villains known to men. He personifies strength, loyalty, and bravery.
