Fr. Teodoro and Mrs. Luna Virtue Essay Christianity and the Aztec civilization developed virtues based on their beliefs. The Aztecs and the Christians were both very passionate about their virtues and customs. Aztecs lived a violent lifestyle, whereas Christians tried to live a life of peace and non-violence. The Christians also practiced the virtue of generosity, while the Aztecs performed self-sacrificing rituals as a way to be generous towards their gods. Self-sacrifice was a virtue for the Aztecs that was taken seriously. The

In Aztec culture, the virtue of self-sacrifice meant that your own life must be sacrificed if necessary. The Aztecs were willing to sacrifice personal possessions and life itself in order to please the gods. Self- sacrifice was an important virtue to the Aztecs because they firmly believed in giving in order to receive, in offering gifts to the earth in exchange for daily sustenance (food), and in paying the gods back for the sacrifices they had made at the Fifth Sun for human life to begin. Self-Sacrifice was seen as an important virtue in their culture in order to keep peace and harmony with the gods and their people. Fagan states, "The offering of human blood was the most profound Aztec religious act. Human sacrifice was the touchstone of all Aztec virtue, the key to their spiritual world. The gods themselves had originated the rite of sacrifice by immolating themselves on the summit of the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan to create the world of the Fifth Sun" (Fagan 424). According to this statement, sacrifice was a form of payment to the gods for creating life and creation. The reason why Aztecs sacrificed was because they …show more content…
Leviticus 25:35-37 states, "if your brother becomes poor and cannot maintain himself with you, you shall support him as though he were a stranger and a sojourner, and he shall live with you. Take no interest from him or profit but fear your God, that your brother may live beside you. You shall not lend him your money at interest, nor give him your food for profit". This verse shows, that when something happens to your family member or friend where they can't support themselves anymore, you have to do what you can to help them without expecting anything back from them or any benefit in return. Christians try their best to live by these types of quotes in the bible. This quote represents the virtue of generosity. Generosity is the act of helping others while not expecting anything in return and not valuing material things that much. Christians did not look for the benefit of their own culture, but the benefit of all of God's people, which is everyone in the world, no matter religion nor color. However, Aztecs sacrificed in a more selfish and violent way, whereas Christians sacrificed for the good of not only themselves but everyone. They were very generous towards others and sought the benefits for not only themselves but God's
Body Paragraph 1- Your View Point 1 The Aztecs should be remembered for human sacrifice because it was unique and was important to them. “Human Sacrifice 1” gives evidence to this claim. According to “Human Sacrifice 1” it states “To keep the sun moving across the sky and preserve their very lives, the Aztecs had to feed Huitzilopochtli with human hearts and
Nahua Myth of the Suns Julie Black stated, “in the mythology of ancient Mexico the world began not with a Genesis overseen by one almighty god, but with a creation resulting from a group effort of many gods and the courageous efforts of two in particular. One of these deities, a deformed god with a humble spirit, became the sun, and the other, the moon” (page 1). There were five different suns, each of them was significant in there own way and how the Aztec believed in them. When I went on Google images about The Sun Gods I saw a picture that caught my attention and it was an image of a group of men holding a man down and ripped his heart out. Also in some cultures, the sun was a vicious god that needed human hearts to shine and they were
One of the highest positions in the Aztec system of government was the High Priest. Their capital, Tenochtitlan, was chosen not because of strategic or environmental factors, but because they saw a religious symbol there (Britannica). The Aztecs based their daily life off of the religious calendar, and festivals and ceremonies were of the highest importance. The most astonishing aspect of their worship, at least to the Spaniards, was their habit of human sacrifice. Sacrifice was something that the Aztecs viewed as normal and even necessary, but it was met only with disgust by the Europeans.
Introduction The Aztecs lived in a mountainout area with lots of rain. They had a good connection with water to support their farming systems. The Aztecs also participated in human sacrifice. They were polytheistic, meaning they believed in many gods, which they sacrificed people in order to please. Human sacrifice affected culture trhough intimidation and rituals.
Many people remember the Aztecs for their incredible farming skills, architecture, and fierce fighting skills, but they didn't do just that. The Aztecs believed in human sacrifice to keep their gods happy. They would sacrifice their people to keep the universe in balance. Human sacrifice was important to the Aztec culture and civilization in many ways.
Dia de los Muertos means “Day of the Dead”. It is celebrated on November the first and second. It is a celebration of the lives of our deceased family and friends. This holiday is usually thought of as a Mexican holiday, but Latin Americans also celebrate this unique holiday. Dia de los Muertos originated in Mexico.
The other was the practice of ritual human sacrifice. Human sacrifice was a huge part of Aztec life. Specifically, the sacrifice of living hearts was thought to be especially pleasing to the gods. Usually the sacrifices were captives whom were captured while raiding other nearby city states. The bravest of those captives were considered to be the most pleasing to the gods when sacrificed.
The Aztecs, like most ancient civilizations, were practicing a polytheistic religion. The most well-known of those civilizations possibly being Ancient Greece. The similarities don’t end there; when most people think of the Aztecs and their religion, they think of their inimical ritual of sacrifice. Thousands of years before, in North Africa, the Carthaginians were sacrificing many of their people, even infants. Most researchers believe it was to appease their gods and even to control the population, which are also reasons Aztec experts believe to be true for the Mesoamerican civilization.
Their belief is, it took multiple gods to create the various characteristics of the world (Odijk 1,2,3). Also, they celebrated over 90 festivals for these gods (Odijk 2). Usually, most of the Aztecs were forced to believe in multiple gods, and they didn't have a choice to believe in another religion (Odijk 1). However, holidays and festivals where only celebrated for the most well known gods (Ancient Aztec Festivals, Celebrations and Holidays 1). The most well known festival was the rain festival which was celebrated 3 times a year (Odijk 1).

Have you ever wondered what it’s like when the Mayan and Aztec lived ? The traditions of the Mayan and Aztec religion and art are very similar but have their differences. The Mayan and Aztec was polytheism (belief or worship of one or more god). Both Mayan and Aztec people believed in human sacrifices.
Although the Aztecs were not the only early civilization to practice human sacrifice, they are still heavily criticized because they were more documented than the others. Aztec sacrifice is looked down upon so much, mainly because of Hernan Cortes and the Conquistadors. Before Cortes met the
The gods were supported yearly by festivals and ceremonies that involved feasting and dancing along with the penance and sacrifice. There were three major themes or cults in the Aztec religion. The first were the gods of fertility and the agricultural cycle, such as a god of rain, the god of maize, and the god of fertility. The second were the gods of creation, the ones who brought the universe into being. The third was the cult of warfare and sacrifice built on a pre existent tradition in Mesoamerica.
The practice of this religion revolved around the Aztec calendar which had various festivals, rituals and sacrifices. The forces of the sun and the moon affected the balance of nature which required balance. All aspects of human life activities were also influenced by religion including childbirth, agriculture, and the Aztec seasons. The role of humans was to maintain this balance through appropriate
A major part of Aztec life, centered around religion. The Aztecs believed in a polytheistic, animistic religion. There were about 128 major deities, including gods of rain, fire, water, corn, the sky, and the sun, which showed you how large of a scale their religion was.
