When faced with challenges, it is a sink or swim kind of deal. You either adapt your skills to fit the situation at hand, or you fail. This is the case for both Charles Lindbergh and Christopher Columbus, no pun intended. While on opposite ends of a four-hundred year gap, both of these men crossed the Atlantic ocean; one nautically and one aeronautically. Columbus and Lindbergh faced challenges, adapted, and in turn they both accomplished great feats. It would be an understatement to say that long journeys hold challenges. Lindbergh and Columbus both experienced challenges while on their trips across the Atlantic. Lindbergh went through a multitude of stress prior to his journey; a bad weather forecast possibly delaying his trip, a lack of
Diligent Work Today in America, every man, regardless of his race, is granted the right of freedom. However, there was a day when all men were not free. African men, forced to live in horrific conditions while being treated lower than animals, were purchased and traded among white men. Booker T. Washington and Frederick Douglass both lived during this dark time when slaveholding was common practice in America. Booker T. Washington was born into slavery, yet freed by the age of nine, thus living the greater portion of his life as a free man.

In Pauline Watts excerpt, “Science, Religion, and Columbus’s Enterprise of the Indies,” she begins by stating that the idea that Columbus was a scientific innovator might not be entirely true. She then proceeds to present the fact that his “Enterprise of the Indies” which got him his approval to sail drew from many older sources which would point to the fact that he is not as big an innovator as we are led on to believe. The two main sources he supposedly used were the Imago Mundi by Pierre d’Ailly and a group of letters written by Paolo Toscanelli which both stated something related to riches being “reached by sailing west rather than by traveling overland to the east” (15). With this new view of Columbus not exactly being as respectable as
“Only educated men are free” was a quote from Epictetus and both Booker T. Washington and Frederick Douglass knew this to be true. Booker T Washington was freed from slavery in 1965, at age 9 when the civil war ended. Fredric Douglass ended up escaping slavery in 1838 at the age of 19. Slavery had been part of the United States since it’s inception and sadly a part of the fabric of many people’s lives. Many did not question the practice or how freed men and women would need help once it was abolished.
Loewen argues, “The authors of history textbooks have taken us on a trip of their own, away from the facts of history, into the realm of myth.” As historical events regress further into the past, writers may misinterpret facts that they may have studied. A story of discovery and friendship or a tale of conquest, murder, and greed, which of these are Christopher Columbus’ true stories? I believe the best method to teach American high school students about Christopher Columbus’ story is through historiography because historiography teaches students to compare and distinguish different outlooks from different writers’ point of views instead of just remembering misinterpreted facts. Historiography would guide and force students to study and learn history through a diverse set of historians who focused on the same subject and come to different conclusions.

Eventually he was able to sail. He changed history by never giving up. If he had given up, we would not have everything that we have today, and people would not know about the new land until years or months after he found the land. In conclusion, I think that Christopher columbus is a hero.
