The two most common psychedelics are LSD and psilocybin, both are very similar and very different. You may have also heard LSD referred to as an “acid tab”, and psilocybin as “magic mushrooms” or “shrooms”. While mushrooms are very natural and have been used since prehistoric times all over the world, LSD was invented by a scientist. However, some may argue that LSD is a much more visual trip. As well as, a trip that last longer than psilocybin and other after effects. Dating back to 1938, a Swiss scientists, Albert Hoffman, invented LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide). It is a clear, odorless and tasteless substance that is more complex than it seems. When consumed it can be taken as an oral pill, tab or liquid, but most commonly used as a tab …show more content…
When the “trip” begins, it can be the most beautiful thing you have ever experienced or the worst nightmare you are living in and can last between six and 18 hours. From the non-user perspective, the user may seem very energetic and when they talk it may be very quickly, jumping from subject to subject. Colors may seem much more stronger and brighter, still objects may have a specific motion, as well as a beam of light following behind a moving object or a halo above it. LSD users also visualize several types of patterns, shapes, colors and textures. Stated by Inverse Science, “A brain on LSD, however, is more akin to the brain of a child because the regions of the brain become hyperconnected” (www.inverse.com). However, when magic mushrooms are ingested, they taste awful. It takes about 30 minutes to an hour to take effect and two to three hours to reach its peak. When the “trip” reaches it peak the user will make comments about “not quite feeling it”, but can visually see it onset of it and this “trip” can last four to six hours. Almost everyone, after consuming the mushrooms, will feel nauseous or queasy, but nonetheless it will go away. The user will not notice the onset until they begin looking around or observe objects around them. Colors will be more vibrant and have a glowy feature, as well as, enhanced textures on objects. Still patterns or …show more content…
However, there is also a comedown from any type of drug or alcohol. The comedown from magic mushrooms is a very mellow, life-affirming experience. Despite the LSD comedown can last up to 24 hours and may feel panicked or paranoid, but it also depends on the person. Stated by Eden Loi in the article What Should You Expect on an LSD Trip?, “After your LSD trip, you may feel strangely bland. A headache or slight hangover feeling is possible, but this is likely due to a lack of sleep, and unrelated to the actual acid. The “hangover” from taking LSD is more like a readjustment to normality” (thethirdwave.co). (I cannot personally advocate for acid, however, one of my close friends remembers that certain thing like foods can trigger very mild visuals or photos with abstract lighting can look
Do we Really Know Everything About Psychedelic “Microdosing”? A less known but increasingly popular phenomenon is fascinating “psychonauts” and puzzling psychologists: microdosing. This new way of taking psychedelic drugs involves routinely taking a small fraction of a normal dose of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) or magic mushrooms, LiveScience (http://www.livescience.com/51482-more-people-microdosing-psychedelic-drugs.html) explained.
The United States needs to legalize LSD for at least research purposes since it can potentially help people dealing with mental illness. If the research reveals that LSD therapy can do more harm on a person than it’s worth, I’ll be for not allowing it to be used as a solution. However, the research done in other countries point to the direction of it potentially benefiting people in therapy. This fact alone is enough for scientists to push for the legalization of LSD for therapeutic purposes. Charles Grob, a University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) professor who leads psychedelic research, noted from his study that subjects he studied quality of life improved majorly after being given psilocybin, a different psychedelic drug.
In Marc Lewis’s novel Memoirs of an Addicted Brain (2012), his experience with marijuana was notably a rollercoaster ride. His first ordeal with the drug occurred when he was a teenager and decided to purchase marijuana from a friend. He began to use it at a period of stress induced by his friends, school and his parents. The first time he decided to take the drug, he dealt with coughing fits until he finally started to feel its effects. His description of his “high”, included the the drug placing him in a more imaginative, creative and happier state.
The substance abuse will make the individual great for a while, but as time passed by he/she will have another stressor. For example, my professor SGM Correia had flashback when he was about to go into the
This “shroom”-LSD-like drug can be found in the southern parts of Texas, to the south-central parts of Mexico. Peyote is also one of the oldest known psychedelics. Peyote has been used in Native American ceremonies for thousands of years, and was supposedly introduced by the southern tribes. “We do know that
Soon after the subject starts hearing and feeling the heart pumping blood to their brain and blood going to the person’s extremities because of sensory adaptation. After that most subjects feel sick like they are about to throw up. It’s after around 45 minutes that the hallucinations

In rare cases, heavy users have reportedly experienced amphetamine psychosis. Those who overdose are most likely to suffer from amphetamine psychosis, this condition is characterized by delusional thoughts, paranoia, and even hallucinations. Opiates use causes extreme euphoria due to the production of excessive levels of endorphins. Once your body is clean of opiates, the opposing force kicks in. The excessive levels of endrophins will disappear. And you will suddenly start feeling the opposite effect of the one caused by opiates. Thankfully, this unfortunate reaction will peak after about three days, with the whole first stage lasting no more than five to six days.
LSD is physically harmless; there can be behavioral consequences for taking LSD, but taking LSD doesn’t affect your physical health (Anders). Regardless of this fact, LSD was harshly targeted by law enforcement. Counterculture (defined as the norms that may challenge or contradict the existing mainstream) was feared by politicians because they didn’t understand the nature of peoples’ affiliation with the drug (Kramer 9). This fear of drug use and harsh prosecution that followed triggered the ‘War on Drugs’; the term was coined in a 1971 speech by Richard Nixon that began a series of policies to criminalize drug use (Baum). John Ehrlichman, an assistant to Nixon in the white house, explained to a reporter from Harpers Magazine that “the Nixon campaign in 1968, and the
However, in almost every story that was told in the documentary, the problem had less to do with the drug and more to do with various circumstances. For example, one woman says that she became violently sick while taking LSD that was, unknown to her, laced with meth. The issue was less the psychedelic that she voluntarily took, but rather the harsh stimulant she was not expecting. People lacing psychedelics with more harmful and addictive drugs would not be an issue, if psychedelics were a Schedule 2 drugs that could be prescribed. Another man describes losing control of his motor vehicle while taking LSD.
Methamphetamine and cocaine are both in the same category of drugs known as stimulants. Meth is completely man-made and is manufactured using common household and industrial ingredients such as over-the-counter cold/allergy medicines, drain cleaner, battery acid, gun cleaner, gasoline additives, muriatic acid, ammonia, lye, acetone and litter. Cocaine on the other hand is naturally occurring and is harvested from the leaves of the cocoa plant. While they are two entirely different drugs, both meth and cocaine have risks associated with their use, and have very high rates of dependence, abuse, and addiction. However, there are very distinct differences between cocaine and meth, in terms of how these drugs affect the individual both physically and psychologically.
Additionally, psychedelic drugs were extremely popular for recreational activities during the 1960’s and 1970’s. In recent years, there has been a lot of research carried out to understand what kind of effects that psychedelic drugs have on humans. It has been proven that this group of drug can cause both physical and psychological effects on humans. This type of psychoactive drug can cause a person to see, hear, and feel things that seem real to them, but do not actually exist.
Such drugs that affect consciousness are: depressants, stimulants, and hallucinogens. In this essay, all three drugs will be discussed. Depressants
Marijuana was said to have a beneficial effect on its user and his relationship with other people. Furthermore, various psychedelics, such as LSD or psychoactive mushrooms, were used to alter and expand one’s mind in order to achieve ultimate wisdom and put oneself in a ecstatic, zen-like state. LSD, most notably, occupied a special place in the hippie’s hearts – it was considered to be a “sacred communion” which brought together everyone in the community. However, the popularity of drug use among hippies had serious drawbacks – the movement was perceived as degraded and immoral; additionally, police raids often went through the communes in search of illegal substances.
