Katniss and Odysseus as Heroic Characters The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is an action adventure novel, and The Odyssey is an epic poem by Homer. Both heroes are pulled away from home and must risk their lives to come back home. The two heroes are Katniss from District 12 and Odysseus, the king of Ithaca. These two have their similarities and differences. Katniss and Odysseus are similar heroic characters in that they are both brave and clever, but their idea of selflessness is different, One similarity that both heroes have is bravery. Katniss shows this through her fight with the Capital. One example is when Katniss decides to nominate herself for the Hunger Games. Katniss has always protected Prim. After their father’s death, Katniss begins supporting her family. She keeps Prim’s entries into the drawing for the Reaping to only one. When Katniss's little sister is called to be placed in a hostile environment, Katniss volunteers in her sister’s place. Katniss …show more content…
Katniss shows this by climbing a tree since she knows that the Careers are too heavy and lacks practice climbing. ’’Why don’t you come on up’’?(Pg 182) She used this to her advantage by cutting a tracker jacker(wasp) nest on the Careers while they are asleep. This was considered clever because she took down a Career, and the girl tribute from District 4. Also, she created a plan to destroy the Careers supplies in the cornucopia. This was clever since Katniss knows that without those supplies the Careers would be more likely to lose in the Hunger Games. Odysseus had a similar idea, to defeat Polyphemus. He waited for Polyphemus to sleep so he can attack him with a burning stick.’’Lolling to one side and sleep took him like any creature’’.(Pg 765) As well as this, Odysseus was also clever by tricking the cyclops by saying his name was Nobody. This allowed none of the other cyclops on the island to come and save
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts, “(Winston S. Churchill). In the book Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt, ten-year-old Jethro Creighton is trying to survive the Civil war, but when things come face to face with him he is going to have to learn to step up is game. In the Hunger games series by Suzanne Collins, Katniss Everdeen is the leader of a rebellion against the ever most superior Capitol. Against all odds she wins the Hunger games, but will she be brave enough to become the Mocking Jay? Katniss Everdeen and Jethro Creighton both have similarities and differences showing bravery, defiance, and the will to overcome fear.
Before Odysseus plans to blind the Cyclops with the sharp, heated timber, he tells the Cyclops, “Cyclops, you ask my honorable name? Remember the gift you promised me, and I shall tell you. My name is Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends, everyone calls me Nohbdy” (Page 665, Lines 359-361). This example shows that even though the moment is to think about how to escape,Odysseus thinks about what he says before doing anything. This example exemplifies the heroic trait because in the current situation Odysseus uses prior knowledge he knows about the Cyclops to help him, which shows how Odysseus overcame his external conflicts by using his intelligence.
Often in literature, comparing stories will lead to revelations about human nature. Lord of the Flies and The Hunger Games both share a motif of being trapped and take human nature to another level. Lord of the Flies and The Hunger Games prove that working together and looking out for each other will give you a greater shot at victory. One very significant similarity is that in both books the characters are trapped on an island and fighting for their safety and survival. In Lord of the Flies, school boys, Ralph, Roger, Simeon, Piggy, Jack and along with other kids are trapped on an island and have to fight for survival, but, after a while of being on the island the civilization starts to die and so do the boys from violence and lack of communication.
Rue helps Katniss by warning her of the tracker jacker nest and aids her to eliminate the other tribute. Katniss also has Peeta who fakes love with
To survive in a harsh environment such as Panem, ability to assess risk and make decisions based on possible consequences is needed. Katniss is a very important example to take risking and beyond thinking for survival. She passes through the fences of District 12 in order to hunt to find food for herself and family, despite the fact that it is forbidden to pass the fences and the punishment is death. So she takes a great risk by passing the fences in order to survive. Also many of her relationships are based on profits for survival as she told: "Gale and I were thrown together by
In the epic story the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is returning from the Trojan war, and on his way home he finds many obstacles ahead of him. Odysseus is the ruler of Ithaca and he is trying to return home to his land. Many creatures try and stop him from achieving his goal of returning home, but he and his crew have to push through and get home. Odysseus portrays bravery and courage leading his crew through these tough challenges. Odysseus heroically leads his crew and himself through dangerous obstacles, but also foolishly endangers them during the journey home.
Personal strengths and weaknesses are magnified during the course of a journey. Some strengths that were magnified during the course of Odysseus’ journey were courage and self-discipline. There were many instances in which he proves to be a courageous man. In the Cyclops story, Odysseus knows that whatever lives on the island he has arrived to is “a towering brute” and a “wild man ignorant of civility” and yet he decides to venture into the cave.
He convinced Polyphemus that Odysseus' name was “Nobody - so my mother and father call me ' (Fagles 223). Odysseus’ smart interactions with Polyphemus demonstrates his ability to
Katniss had to be responsible for keeping her family and friends safe and alive, but she also had to take care of herself. In chapter eleven the Hunger Games had began and Katniss left behind the bow that was supposed to “belong to her”. She knew that there was no way she could have survived without it, but she also knew that it was her fault and she had to survive without it. In Chapter 13 Katniss was being “chased” by a fire and fire balls were being thrown at her. She got severely burned and couldn’t do much at all so she had to fix her own leg because there was no one else to help her.
Before Katniss rests and goes to sleep in the Games, she chooses to set snares to protect herself against fellow tributes and to catch some game. Chapter eleven, page one hundred and fifty-five states that Katniss is resourceful with this quote, "Before settling down, I take my wire and set two twitch-up snares in the brush. " This quote expresses
This change of thought and decision making is only natural due to the nature of the Hunger Games. A large giveaway that Katniss is making decisions that benefit her is the fact that was killing people in the arena. An example of this is when a group of “career” tributes (the tributes that have trained for the Hunger Games since they were young) and Peeta chase Katniss into a tree in an attempt to kill her. They decide rather than follow her up, they would wait it out until she had to come down. Instead of crawling down and accepting her fate Katniss notices a nest full of tracker jackers, which are genetically modified wasps with deadly poison, and decides to cut it down onto the group below her.
In the book The Odyssey, the main character, Odysseus, is a man who is loved and respected by many. In the beginning of the book, we learn that Odysseus has left on a journey and, since it has been many years since his departure, many people assume that he has passed. On his journey, he portrays his many traits, not all of them being good ones either. Some of his good traits include his cunning, bravery, and hard work ethic. On the other hand, his negative traits are his excessive pride, immense curiosity, and rather large temper.
The Careers have trained their entire life for this event, and for them it is an honor to compete. Katniss also faces challenges with the Gamemakers. They are the ones who control the games, and are the ones who will give Katniss the majority of her tests. In the arena, it is brutal. Test after test, Katniss is still alive.
In The Odyssey, Odysseus was a major hero of the novel. He had both heroic traits and human weaknesses. Odysseus defeated the Cyclops, defeated the suitors that were courting his wife, and overcome other challenges throughout the novel. A special trait that made Odysseus a hero was that he was a courageous
