“As we passed on, it seemed those scenes of visionary enchantment would never have an end,” said Lewis going on his expedition. Merriweather Lewis, part of the Lewis and Clark expedition with William Clark, explored the Louisiana Purchase, and met with interesting sites and new people. Lewis and Clark were adventurers who explored the unknown parts of America. In May 1804 to September 1806 Lewis and Clark started their expedition, it was the first American expedition to cross what is now the western portion of the Unites States. Louis, Missouri, in May 1804. They were called the Corps of Discovery by historians. Lewis and Clark faced hard obstacles such as dangerous waters, harsh weather, endured hunger, illness, injury, and fatigue. But luckily they had assistance from their native people they met during their journey westward. Mandan’s a native tribe, helped Lewis by providing them with supplies during the winter. During his expedition he picked up to members, Sacagawea a woman who was pregnant when Lewis and Clark arrived, a Shoshone helped by getting horses for the group on the journey. They reached the Pacific Ocean in November 1805 and built Fort Clatsop and spent the winter in Oregon. When they headed back Lewis and Clark split up to explore more of Louisiana territory to look for a faster way back home. Lewis was the one who had it hard because he faced danger, like Blackfeet Indians stealing from them and two Blackfeet being killed. Pomp then mere a prince from Germany then told Pomp to come back with him to Europe, where he was the captain of hunting
Born August 18, 1774; Meriwether Lewis was an American explorer, soldier, politician, public administrator, and the leader of the Louisiana expedition group known as the Corps of Discovery. During the first few years of his life, Meriwether grew up on his family’s estate in Ivy Creek, Virginia. After the death of Meriwether’s father in 1779, Meriwether’s mother Lucy Meriwether remarried to John Marks who later moved the family to Broad River Valley, Georgia in 1780. At his new home, Meriwether was influenced by his love for natural history and spent most of his time improving his skills as an outdoorsman, and it is said that he would go out hunting with his dogs at the age of eight. Meriwether’s mother who was a regionally-known herbalist
Two explorers under direct instructions from the President traveled with their crew westward and explored the Louisiana territory in search of the Pacific water route. The two travelers involved in this exploration were none other than Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Their journey was vastly known as the Lewis and Clark's expedition. President Thomas Jefferson commissioned this expedition shortly after he bought the Louisiana territory from France, which was also known as the Louisiana Purchase. Lewis and Clark along with their crew namely Corps of Discovery set out on the journey of finding the route on 18th May, 1804.
LEWIS & CLARK EXPEDITION After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 President Jefferson appointed his own private secretary Meriwether Lewis as Commander in charge to explore the unknown territory. Lewis then invited William Clark is former superior officer to be his Co-commander. They set out from Camp Dubois and were to explore the new territory, affirm the sovereignty of the US, find a water way to the Pacific, and establish trade with the Natives. Lewis and Clark commanded the Corps of Discovery which had 33 people, 26 being soldiers to include Sergeant Charles Floyd the only person to die on the expedition, one being Clark’s personal slave named York who would be given his freedom at the end of the expedition and one being Sacagawea
“The Lewis and Clark Expedition paddled its way down the Ohio as it prepared the Expedition to be launched officially from Camp Wood, just outside St. Louis, in the summer of 1804” (2), and the Corps of Discovery’s official mission would commence near the outskirts of St. Louis in 1804 where they would move upstream of the Missouri River to a place called Fart Mandan that was used at a trading post where they would wait out the winter. The Corps were tested with several bumps in the road that would slow and threatened the journey like the insects they would encounter, heat they would have to endure and injuries that were unavoidable given the working conditions they were under. There was a man by the name of Charles Floyd, that Lewis and Clark liked the most out of the crew, died of what was labeled as his appendix bursting and was “the only person to die on the two and one-half year journey.” As they continued forward in their quest they eventually make it to a village inhabited by the Mandan Indians whom belonged to a large trade network in the West. This is where they recruited a Frenchman by the name of Toussaint Charbonneau, that they would use as a means of translation between their current
The Lewis and Clark expedition is arguably the most courageous and adventurous exploration effort ever made in American history. The Lewis and Clark took place after the Louisiana Purchase as an effort to find a northwest passage, map the newly purchased land, make scientific discoveries in the area, and to establish contact with the natives and set up a strong trade network with them. Through efforts of Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, Sacagawea, and many others, the United states was radically changed through the exploration of these new uncharted areas. The Lewis and Clark exploration would not have been possible without Thomas Jefferson's monumental purchase of the Louisiana Territory. Due to the United States westward
It was thomas jefferson's newly owned land and his will to explore it he decided to send explorers across it in which he named the corps of discovery. The heads of the group were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. When starting the expedition meriwether lewis bought many gifts for the indians such as beads, coats, fabrics, and hats that could hopefully help convince the indians to be relatively good friends with the explorers and our country. When the expedition started exploring in 1803 they started down the Mississippi river on three ships and didn’t run into any american indians. as they traveled they learned about many new things such as minerals and plants so far unknown to science and eventually sent a care package back to president Jefferson on one of the three ships to show him all the new scientific discoveries that the expedition had made.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition Jefferson and the nation now needed to know what lay in the land that they had just purchased. Americans knew that indigenous people lived in the territory but they knew little about them or the ecology and geography of the lands west of the Mississippi. Jefferson commissioned his personal assistant, former army captain Meriwether Lewis to lead the Corps of Discovery expedition of 50 men westward, Lewis chose his friend Lieutenant William Clark to
Besides discovering the west, they explored different climates and terrains, and recorded them in their journals. Thank goodness for that, because now future explorers can use their journals and broaden their discoveries. Some may argue that Lewis and Clark didn’t do much, like one historian says “Lewis and Clark’s expedition does not deserve all the attention that it gets. Yes, they were the first to whites there, but their route was not used by future settlers or traders.” Even though future settlers or traders didn’t use their exact route, but they might not even have been able to trade or settle without their
Because of Clark's experience with indians he was promoted to the superintendent of indian affairs. When Julia died, in 1820, she left along 5 children and Sacagawea's child “Pomp.” Clark remarried Julia's cousin ,Harriet Kennerly Radford,in 1821 and took in two more children. when Harriet died in 1831 Clark Decided to move to St. Louis to live with his son Meriwether Lewis Clark, and ended up dying on September 1st, 1838 by what is known as a “brief illness” (lewisclark.net). William was not only great on “Corps of Discovery” but had a great effect on America even after the
In total, The Corps of Discovery covered around 8,000 miles. Lewis, Clarke, and their unit acquired many achievements for the United States. Not only did they map and kept detailed journals of the territory in the west, but also staked claims in those areas and gained strong relationships with the native tribes spread throughout the
From 1804-1806, the Corps of Discovery embarked on a journey that would take them through thick forests, across dangerously fast rivers, and up into the highest regions of the country. The most famous members, Lewis and Clark, led the expedition, along with the help of many others, including a Native American woman named Sacagawea. They scouted and mapped the area, taking notes and naming regions that would later be populated by thousands of pioneers that would immigrate into the area. Their efforts towards exploration proved successful and allowed the U.S. to gain detailed information of their newly acquired land. Within American history, a number of individuals have reached greatness, yet only a few have ever been appreciated and recognized
1. Whiskey Rebellion: In western Pennsylvania, whiskey was very popular. In 1791, the federal government passed a tax on whiskey. The farmers refused to pay the tax, saying it was like the Stamp Act all over again. In 1794, people began to rebel/rioting and assaulting the tax collectors.
Meriwether Lewis was one of the leaders of the Lewis and Clark expedition. He was the governor of the Louisiana Territory. Lewis was one of Thomas Jefferson’s most trusted friends to get his money from the government and to deliver something to Thomas Jefferson. During the journey ,Jefferson stopped at Robert Grinder’s inn to rest while James Neely apparently went to look for the missing horses. There, Meriwether Lewis was murdered by a conspiracy.
Lewis and clark had a really large expedition starting May 14, 1804 to september 23, 1806 exploring the louisiana purchase area. While going through a lot of hard times the Lewis and Clark expedition was a great success. Lewis and Clark went through a lot of hard times in the lewis and clark expedition. First, they had to make friends with the indians witch in some cases is not the easiest thing to do. They also had to go through cold weather when they went into states like North Dakota.
Before Lewis and Clark explored it , the West was virtually untouched by Europeans. It was the home of many Native tribes. , such as the Missouri, and Ohta Nations, the Tieton- Su, and the Nez Perce. It was also home to many unknow plants and animals, such as bison. The Lewis and Clark Expedition, faced many challenges and triumphs that changed the lives of many.
