Before the Europeans began arriving in North America to expand, the Natives had already established self governing tribes. In the map of Native Cultures in North America from the year 600 to 1500, it is evident that the groups functioned independently from each other. Although, several tribes lived close together, and because of this they shared many similarities but also faced conflicts between each other, due to the change in weather and the poor living conditions it caused. Tribes became weak, and with the “odd-looking strangers” who “frequently took away women and children never to be seen again” and carried plagues with them, leaders understood they must join together to become stronger against the Europeans (Miller).
