Superman, Black Panther, Green Lantern, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Flash, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, Wonder Woman. All of these characters are examples for children, or even adults, all around the world, and are considered perfect examples for the term “Hero”. In the odyssey we see the journey of Odysseus, and his perils, and his victories and losses. Odysseus fits the archetype of a hero, in many ways, so he will be compared to a stereotypical hero, Batman. Batman and Odysseus are both fit to be called a “hero” for many reasons, for example, they show strength, bravery, and confidence many times throughout their journeys, they both come up against supernatural foes, and they are both of Noble birth.

In the story of the Cyclops in “The Odyssey”, lines 374-378, Odysseus and his men do this “I drew it from the coals and my four fellows gave me a hand, lugging it neat the Cyclops as more than natural force served them; straight forward they lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye…” This shows how Odysseus has to fight off supernatural foes, and defeats them, along with his crew. This aspect is important because it is almost a necessity with heroes so there can be some sort of conflict throughout their quest. Which is also important so the story does not get dull and boring, and so the hero can show their feats of strength in battle with a formidable opponent. Fighting these supernatural foes can also make heroes improve upon their abilities and cause more character development throughout their story. Batman has to fight many supernatural foes throughout his quest, including Bane, Killer Croc, a mutated, stronger version of the Joker and Poison Ivy. This shows how Batman goes through a lot of conflict throughout his story, which makes him really have to work to get to his end-goal. This is important because heroes should have some difficulties in their journeys, and should even fail sometimes so they can learn from their mistakes. Which is important because by facing difficulties they will improve which will add necessary …show more content…
In the bottom part of page 16 in “The Odyssey” on lines 144-146, Odysseus says this “Where shall a man find sweetness to surpass his home and his parents? In far lands he shall not, though he find a house of gold.” This means that Odysseus has a difficult time living up to his parents’ legacy and outgrowing just being known as “Laertes’ Son.” I think this matters because it implies that his father, Laertes, had a heft legacy to live up to, which means he is of Noble Birth. I think this is a good quality for heroes to have because it makes them more special, and even better, it makes them special from the moment they were born. Batman was born from wealthy philanthropist parents who were very famous in his home city (Gotham) for hosting fundraisers for the betterment of the city, donating to hundreds of charities, and just being good people. This means that Batman has a large legacy to live up to when it comes to his parents. This is important because Batman trying to live up to their legacy adds more conflict to his story, which is more mental conflict, which can be considered another popular factor in a hero’s story. He attempts to live up to their legacy either by fighting crime as Batman or trying to help the city using the money that his alter ego, Bruce Wayne has. All these factors prove my point that Odysseus and Batman both are of Divine or Noble
In The Odyssey, in “Circe’s Island” Odysseus shows that he is a hero, loyal to his men and never leaves them behind. On Circe’s Island, Odysseus sends his men to go search for any life on the island. Afterwards, they did not return back to the ship because they were turned into pigs by Circe. When one of the men escaped he told Odysseus and Odysseus went to save them.
This is shown in each example where Odysseus is
One particular situation occurred while Odysseus was on the Phaekians' island, being taunted by young athletes, and even after his long, tiring voyage, he “picked up a hefty discus... / ...much heavier than the ones used by the Phaekians / … / [and] sent it flying from his powerful hand … / … / … / [after which] it sailed beyond the marks of all the other men” (VIII. 238-244). Odysseus' behavior in that instance shows that he is reluctant to humiliate his generous hosts, but if challenged, he can overpower almost any human.
Even defeating a Cyclops: “lugging it near the Cyclops… straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye,” (330-333, 992). Odysseus is a strong warrior and he escapes with his life. Odysseus traveling over a vast and being a great warrior in turn makes him heroic.
Odysseus went above and beyond as far as heroes go though. True heroes are leaders who are loving, kind, fair, caring, and admired by those whom they rule, but Odysseus was so much more than that. He was so dedicated to his crew, that he was willing to sacrifice himself for them, and he almost did just that on Circe's island. He knew he stood no chance against Circe and would probably be turned into a pig, but he had to at least try to get his men back, even if it meant sacrificing himself in the attempt. As the swineherd said when asked about Odysseus, “Never another master kind as he” and as he elaborated on the subject of Odysseus, “That man, old friend, far away as he is… I can scarcely bear to say his name aloud, so deeply he loved me, cared for me, so deeply.
Despite Odyesseus’s brave acts as a general, he would be unable to meet the requirements of a modern day hero due to his ineffective leadership. Odysseus’s acts of brutality embodies his ineffective
As odysseus returned home from his 10 year journey he found his house infatuated with suitors stealing his food and being unfaithful to his wife. Odysseus did everything to protect his wife and son “ I would not stay my hands from the slaughter, until I had taken revenge for all the suitors' transgression. Now the choice has been set before you, either to fight me or run, if any of you can escape death and its spirits. But I think not one man will escape from sheer destruction.” Odysseus used his bravery Odysseus exemplifies several of the characteristics that are necessary to portray a hero.
Odysseus receives supernatural help and he shows his tragic flaws of pride and recklessness which is a trait of an epic hero(to have tragic flaws and receive supernatural
Being a somewhat xenophobic society the Greeks, in this case the Phaeacians, must guarantee that the visitor is friend and not foe, prior opening their homes in hospitality. If they could not receive proof of his noble lineage, Odysseus ran the risk of execution or expulsion. There plays the role of pride; a hero must maintain his air of pride, and self-acknowledgment in his own accomplishments, tales of glory, and brawn, otherwise he is deemed weak in mind and spirit or perhaps seen as an unknown, and therefore, a
Usually nobody thinks about how these heroes in their everyday action, after a while they slowly become this heroic act. That is all people know about them and that’s all that they want to know. However, people who perform heroic acts aren’t always heros. In The Odyssey, Odysseus may have done a few honorable things here and there, but in this case he was not known for these. He
Odysseus is cruel and quick to anger, arrogant, and does not truly win in the end. Along with the Hero’s journey, there is another journey that is not talked about. The villain’s journey is a parallel to the hero’s journey but usually ends the inverse of the Hero’s journey. Both hero and villain experience a call to adventure with guidance along the way.
The new Marvel Movie, Black Panther, just hit the market and everyone is raving about it already. This movie hero from 2018 shares the same qualities as a hero from the Greek times; the stories of heroes use the same concepts, just with different names and settings. For example. Odysseus from Homer’s epic poem the Odyssey, shares many characteristics with the Black Panther. The major difference between the two is that Odysseus is struggling to go back home while Black Panther is struggling to save his home, but both concern the battle against injustice.
Heroes are, “People who take risks despite fear”(Source 2). In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus faces many challenges that make him a hero. He battles monsters, goddesses, and enchantresses. Odysseus is a hero in the way that he uses his brain to think about and approach dilemmas. When he and his men are on the Cyclops’ island, Odysseus tells the cyclops that his name was Nobody.
The significance of being a hero in real life or in literature is the development of certain elements of their characters that bring out the qualities that allows those around them to follow faithfully; without doubt or question. Beowulf and Odysseus both have their own individual paths that they have taken in their quests; during these quests they are able to establish to those around them through their acts the establishment of their hero status. Odysseus, also known by the Latin name Ulysses, was a legendary Greek king of Ithaca and the hero of Homer's epic poem the Odyssey (Encyclopedia Britannica). Beowulf is an epic poem from Old English relating to the hero exploits of Beowulf and his battles.
(Hamilton, Goldfinger). Although Odysseus and James Bond both use clever plans to confront their obstacles, they are both set back by fatal flaws, proving that heroism has remained the same. To start, after Odysseus and his crew have escaped from the cyclops, the hero desires credit for his cunning plan, so he shouts back at the beast, “if any man on the face of the earth should ask you who blinded you, shamed you so--- say Odysseus, raider of cities” (Homer
