World History
Period: 8 Sparta Vs. Athens Ancient Greece is a land of many city- states. Each city- state had its own government, law, rulers, and customs, also the city- states did not get along. Two of the most famous city- states are Sparta and Athens. But if anyone would have to pick one to live in most of the people would pick Sparta. Sparta is better than Athens because Spartan army was very much better and protective, girls received some education, and women had more freedom than in any other poleis. The army of Sparta was the strongest army in Greece. Beginning at the age of seven, young boys were sent from their families to live in military barracks.
Athens vs. Sparta DBQ Athens and Sparta were two of the world's greatest ancient civilizations. Though they were both city-states in Greece they had their differences. Some of the largest contrasts were education, government, and the roles girls and women played in their societies. In Sparta the schools for children were very harsh and military based.
Both had a strong military and engaged all of its citizens in war. Both governments were formed by wealth status with the richest members of their populations holding highest political offices. Differences between Athen's and Sparta's Government structures Athen's government structure was considered to be a democracy.
Athens vs. Sparta Whether it's government, education, art, or military, Athens and Sparta have always had many similarities as well as differences in ancient Greece. Sparta and Athens did not share the same view and opinions. As a result of these disagreements, the two ancient Greek city-states were rivals. They both had very different methods of teaching, military training, women's rights, and more. Spartans focused most on the training of war, and Athens focused most on knowledge and intelligence.
I would like to educate the masses on a matter of frequent debate. This is none other then Athens vs Sparta, and I can say the thorough research and facts have lead me to concluded that Sparta is a much better city-state then Athens. Sparta is better then Athens because of its respect of women, more equal school system, integrity of government, treatment of slaves, and superior military. First of all, women were given far more rights than in Athens. First of all, Women in Sparta could own there own land, participate in politics and the olympics among other things.
Life in sparta was different than athens because sparta had no interest in art, music and education. Everything was centered in sparta was focused on the military. My opinion strengths did not outweighed the weakness of sparta education and I will explain how the strength was the most important than caring the weakness of sparta education.
Who was the better Greek city-state? Athens or Sparta? A question asked for quite some time now, probably since they existed. It’s time we get an answer! If you ask me, I think it was Athens that was the better Greek city state.
Sparta lacked in education, they were too harsh on the children in military training, and the Spartans didn’t allow traveling. To begin with Sparta completely discarded all advanced education. In document A it states,”Only the rudiments of reading and writing were taught”. This unacceptable, because for a civilization to flourish they need to be both smart and strong. Sparta needs to balance their military and education better.
Second, due to the government in Sparta Sparta was more organized than Athens. Athens used a form of government called a Democracy, ruled by the people. Since the people of Athens may have different opinions, leading
The significance of Athenian men receiving army training as well as an education allowed for not only the bettering of their military, (which due to their location by the Aegean Sea had one of the strongest Navies in Ancient Greece) it also let them have knowledge in the arts and philosophy, this makes me want to live in Athens because I would know that i would be protected and the economy of my city state would be stable. Although Sparta may have some advantages over Athens, Athens was better prepared and knowledgeable over Sparta. In light of the evidence provided, Athens truly was the most impactful
Even to this day, we still use Athens and Sparta’s societal systems and structures because they were so revolutionary. Athens even introduced the idea of democracy, and Sparta had a strong military culture. Although Athens and Sparta were close together, Athens focused on leadership and education while Sparta focused on the military and war. However, due to their different governments and cultures, each has their strengths and weaknesses. However, because Athens focuses on its future leaders, Athens is the better model for a society.
These two polis demonstrate the variation of power seen in ancient Greece. Sparta is well known for having had a military state with fierce warriors. While Athens is well known for having been the birthplace of democracy. The spartans had a scarcity of land and therefore set out to invade Laconia. In 730 B.C., Sparta invaded and took control of Messenia although they were a bigger and stronger city.
Rome and Sparta were both highly militarized societies, but the Spartan state was much more stratified and totalitarian than the Roman state. In Sparta, the state exercised total control over the lives of all classes, while the Romans were more flexible and inclusive. The Peloponnesian War was a conflict that broke out in 431 B.C. that pitted Athens and Sparta primarily against each other.
This was mainly due to the geographic locations of the two states, Athens was the capital of Greece while Sparta was situated in a revering location. Athens was also known for importing large quantity of steel and fabricating ships which Sparta strength was its army. In conclusion, Athens was the first state to take steps to adapt democracy. Citizens were allowed to participate in selection of public officers despite just a small percent of persons met the criteria at that time. There are a few similarities between Athens and Sparta and many differences, this was expected because of Athen's policy, and it is also the capital city of Greece and therefore the economic activity in this state is expected to be very
Sparta vs. Athens To begin with, Athens and Sparta were both famous in antiquity for their legend, cultures and the character of the people. On the one hand, the two poleis share certain obvious affinities, such as language, geographical scope, a common Greek ancestry etc. On the other hand, they were polar opposites in many aspects, from social spheres, political structures, to military might, which I believe there are some hidden depths in these city-states. Hence, let’s look at how did their people obtain the right to participate in public life and make decisions affecting the community, and who held public office first.
Sparta seemed intent on consolidating power amongst its aristocratic families, while Athens moved in a different direction, attempting to keep power from gathering around any specific group, How were the two city-states similar in their governmental structures, and how did they differ? Both societies had a public assembly in which every citizen could make themselves heard. Both had relatively short terms of public office, (excluding the Gerousia) and both believed in reaching a consensus before enacting policy. Athens had a much larger group of citizens who had a much greater influence on matters of policy, and Sparta was a much more streamlined machine, geared toward making war, and maintaining military readiness.
