The Canadian Mental Health Crisis And The Organizations At Work
Canada is a country with many health benefits, but it is also a country that spends only 6 percent on mental health and has the third highest suicide rate in the industrialized world (Youth Metal Health Canada). This reflection will dive into what mental health is and what two stakeholders are doing about it.
According to the Oxford Languages mental health can be defined as “A person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being” (Oxford languages). Using this information we can understand one’s psychological well being is essential in regards to their current state and has implementations on their physical health.

The goals for CAMIMH is to; create a voice nationwide about mental health in Canada, engage Canadians in conversations about mental health to reduce the stigma, and put policies in Canada to ensure people with mental illnesses are able to receive care that is appropriate and timely. They stand to represent 16 mental health groups who work to advocate for health care providers, patients with mental illness, and their families. CAMIMH is working to keep these goals and promises constantly by communicating with the government to help increase the mental health budget and have been doing so yearly. Furthermore, they work on formulating reports about what the government is currently doing and talking with the media about the issues and their initiatives. This organization has been working to create a better world for those who are diagnosed with mental health issues, and those who are negative at the current moment since 1998. They want to create a voice in Canada for youth who have mental health disabilities. They are working to benefit Canadian youth by advocating for mental health education, support, advocacy, and change for youth with chronic mental health disabilities, and advocating for needs-based, culturally sensitive, trauma-based mental health support and services. They see the value in the youth of today and wish to p-rovide services that benefit all Canadians. Continuing to major section II, the researcher developed a theoretical perspective including a literature review. The researcher had to know what the current base of knowledge was to make a contribution to the topic. MSH and DMH websites provided information about their mission; as well as their services. With the subject of funding mental health care being a hot topic right now, the researcher was able to get a considerable amount of information from agency documents and reports; as well as the local media. The researcher also used scholarly peer-reviewed secondary sources from Belhaven’s online library databases.
Throughout this assignment it is going to explain how legislations and social policies have changed the response to the needs of individuals who suffer from mental health conditions, it is also going analyse the impact of the recent changes within social policies. The history behind mental health has had a major impact on today’s society, how the legislations and policies have been reformed over the centuries. Treatment and social standards have also change dramatically; in 1247 the first Bethlem Royal Hospital was built in London. This hospital was originally built to collect money; food etc for the Crusader Church, this building was used as a church for a hundred years.
Although there are many, an example includes the need to increase empirically supported mental health practices that are focused on youth. Also, there is a need to advocate for coordination of services that impact youth while also holding these same services accountable for youth identification and treatment. I always assumed that someone’s health could only be treated by a doctor. Nonetheless, as my education flourished I soon realized that programs that focus on preventing adverse health outcomes could reduce the incidence of disease. Furthermore, public health provided the opportunity to develop prevention programs to assist those who suffered from mental illness. To learn this was not only exciting, it provided a break in the current gap of mental health prevention programs currently being offered in my county’s school districts.
They can use their influence to raise awareness and support social issues such as racial justice, gender equality, and overall mental and physical health.
Mental health is a state of psychological well-being. According to World Health Organization (WHO) mental health includes "subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, intergenerational dependence, and self-actualization of one's intellectual and emotional potential, among others." (Organization, WHO 2001) However, cultural differences, race, ethnicity, personal background, subjective assessment, and socioeconomic status all affect how mental health is defined. This variation in definitions of mental health between different sects of our society further causes drift in methods of treatment, and may cause the burden of mental health to be greater on some cultures.

While they both desire to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, their respective objectives for addressing Canada's mental health crisis are different. The objectives of CAMIMH are to; establish a nationwide voice for mental health in Canada, to engage Canadians in conversations about mental health to decrease stigma, and to implement policies in Canada to ensure that those who suffer from mental illnesses can receive timely, appropriate care.
