Which character in the book is your favorite, and why? Do you like characters who are sympathetic, or funny, or irreverent, or daring, or what?
My favorite character in the book is Wes’ mother. She is willing to sacrifice her time and energy, work hard at her job, and think and do the best thing for her children to protect them, even if it means extra work to lead them to success. I believe, that without her caring and compassionate personality, Wes could easily have had the same story as “the other Wes.” Her renunciation of sleep after the death of Wes’ father to protect her children from outsider attacks, and her decision to work extra hard, borrow money from neighbors and families to send Wes away to military school were the reasons why

How is he or she different from other writers whom you have read? What specific aspects of his or her style stand out? What other writers does this writer remind you of, and how so?
His style of writing two stories of two young boys in a parallel storyline is very well suited for the book. The parallel storyline allowed the author to successfully portray the similarities and contrasts of the two stories in one book. As I read through the book, I noticed how the author starts with the similar backgrounds of two boys, and then moves on to how they both did not have fathers growing up, then how they both got into many trouble in school and with friends, but then at last, one grows up to be successful and the other behind bars. Therefore, the explanations of the resemblances of the two Wes’ highlight the contrast at the end, and I believe that this was only made possible by the the author’s decision to use a parallel storyline which was very effective in telling this particular story. This style of writing reminded myself of Witi Ihimaera, who is the author of the novel “Whale Rider.” Ihimaera also uses parallel storyline in this novel, but with whales and humans. This style of writing suits both books very well, because the main purpose of both these books are to compare and contrast two different

The parallel writing enhanced my astonishment for the very different fates that the two had grown up to have. The parallel writing also allowed the author to clearly portray that the difference between the two characters was an extremely thin wall, because the parallel writing illustrates how the two had very similar backgrounds with very similar stories, and still ended up having completely different lives, for example when the author wrote about a trouble that Wes got into, the author also wrote about the troubles that the other Wes had got into, in the next chapter. Therefore, the stories goes on in a parallel storyline, until the end, where their different paths were explained about. I was mostly satisfied after completing the book, because the book has taught me that every choice that we make in our daily lives and the judgements of whether the chance you are given is one of many more, or the last one, are crucial decisions that we need to consider thoroughly, otherwise we could easily become the “other Wes Moore.” However, as the author writes, “When I finished my story, the question that comes up is the one of that initiated this quest, ‘What was the difference?’ and the truth is that I don’t know. ” (Moore, 2010) I was left with a curiosity for what the exact difference between “Wes” and “the other Wes” was, and
Literature that touches on a wide range of topics and themes make for excellent novels. Allowing a literary work to have multiple messages creates a greater opportunity for the reader to relate, in turn, allowing it to flourish. Cold Sassy Tree, written by Olive Ann Burns in 1984, set in an early 1900s Georgia, does a phenomenal job of relaying multiple themes to the reader. The book Cold Sassy Tree is successful because of the character’s confrontation with the concepts of death, love, and religion. The book Cold Sassy Tree centers around Will Tweedy, a fourteen-year-old who is undergoing an abundance of change.
She also explains that many people have sacrificed for Wes to attend military school. For instance, Valley Forge military school was very expensive. Joy had written to friends and family for help in any way they could. Wes’ grandparents also gave up their mortgage payments and many years of saving to help pay for Wes military school. As mentioned, his mother’s support was a big part of Wes
Witness is a historical novel written by Karen Hesse. Hesse takes readers to a small town in Vermont in the year 1924 through poems and short passages from the characters. During this time in history, the Ku Klux Klan was spreading across the country and making its presence known. Throughout the plot, the KKK performs many inhumane rituals that include: several cross burning ceremonies, an attempt at killing Ira Hirsh, the murder of a Jewish boy, and the hanging of a polish man. These events are portrayed by Hesse in a not so typical but very efficient way.
The main gist of the book ‘‘Because of Winn Dixie’’ is that India Opal Buloni(Opal) has recently moved to Florida and is having trouble making friends, but that all changes when she finds Winn Dixie. It all starts out when Opal goes to the grocery store ‘Winn Dixie market’ and she hears people yelling and shouting about, “Someone get that dog out of my store, or I’m going to call the pound!” , so of course Opal is not the type to let that happen, so she says, “Wait, don’t call the pound, thats my dog,”. So she takes the dog home with her and begs her father(also known as the preacher of the local church), and tries to convince him to let her keep the dog, and brings up how he is always saying to try an help the less fortunate, and eventually
In his novel, “Another Bullshit Night in Suck City,” Nick Flynn uses a braided structure that weaves together three narratives: his childhood, his father’s earlier life, and the present of his adulthood. Flynn effectively uses this unorthodox structure to contribute to the story’s deeper meaning; the intertwining nature of our past and future selves. Each narrative acts as a single strand that comes in and out of focus much like the braiding of hair. Momentarily illuminated then passed by as the next strand is brought into attention.
The author Wes Moore would have most likely taken the same route as the other Wes Moore if it weren’t for military school. This article talks about how other characters have an effect on the main characters
Part A: Plot 1) The memoir, “The Glass Castle”, by Jeanette Walls is told in the first person point of view. Miss Walls chose to make use of this perspective as it best complements the plot of the novel since it is a memoir. The novel is told through the eyes of the author, who is the protagonist, and remembers the memoir in chronological order. The novel is only told in the perspective of Jeanette exclusively as she travels through the United States with her dysfunctional family, living in intolerable conditions.
How to Read Literature like a Professor Analysis This was a very informative book that pointed out a lot of aspects of literature I had never really paid attention to. It really showed me how important it is to find similarities between works of literature. It especially made me realize how while all three of my summer readings were drastically different, they shared common themes, plots and even sometimes character developments.
If i had to tell you the difference between Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde, i would first say that Dr.Jekyll is a man that seperates his private life and also his public life. They also would claim him to be the good side . He is a doctor as well as a long time friend and also a a successful scholar. During his private life he is more forward for more liberty and also to do activities that will bring public disgrace if he did things that were known around the area. Utterson even often called him "devoted" Mr. Hyde on the other hand is a one part individual.
The first story serves as a physical game played by the brothers as kids which manifest and foreshadow the events occurring in their adult life. This was done deliberately to mimic the boy's childish behaviour on the island such as failing to make shelters and their constant disregard for the designated toilet spot. They consistently act irrationally and irresponsibly. Similar to games, where we are forced to act under pressure and if we make the wrong move we have to face the consequences, no matter how severe. Each move can mean life or death, every argument, every negotiation, and every bribe can and will change the outcome of the game.
Title: No Laughing Matter Author: Joseph Heller Characters: Joseph Heller (Main Character) Joseph’s “cronies”- Mel Brooks, Mario Puzo, and Speed Vogel -Joseph’s friends remind me of my own, because when Joseph was down and needed support he had his friends there for him to love and laugh along. Ayah and Kaycee specifically have been here to support me through my surgeries and pain during the injury of my knee, so Joseph’s friends, or “cronies”, remind of my loving and caring friends.
The paths diverged when the author Wes Moore got enrolled into Valley Forge military school while the other Wes Moore was still in the ghetto part of Baltimore. In Valley Forge, the rules are strict and grueling which made the author Wes Moore more respectful and more discipline than when he was in Bronx. Entering Valley Forge also introduced a variety of mentors that will later help and guide the author Wes Moore in the right way in the future. The other Wes Moore however still resided at Baltimore and will be later influenced on what the general majority was doing. This meant that in a young age, he was selling drugs and will also later be a father before he was in his twenties.
My favorite character is Summer. She’s my favorite because she was very kind and warm heart towards August when he first started school. For example she said “I sit with Auggie at lunch because he's a nice kid.” She sets a very good example to show the readers that it's good to treat everyone fairly and not differently depending
June boatwright really stood out to me as i read this book because she reminded me of myself. She reminds me of myself because I am very aggressive and throughout the book she came to me as an aggressive person. She’s very straight-forward and emotionless. She doesn’t care how you feel or what’s wrong, she only cares about how it can affect her. She is some what selfish.
“ My Grandfather cried, waving his ever-present pipe as we listened, They’re going to hand this country over to that crazy Austrian”. Chapter 1. This quote us said by Alfon’s grandfather during the first chapter. This quote is important because in the beginning before the war and holocaust the people of Germany where extremely happy with Hitler's choices that helped improve Germany’s economy and also lower the percentage of unemployment. These changes happened as a result of the start of World War two.
