Which character in the book is your favorite, and why? Do you like characters who are sympathetic, or funny, or irreverent, or daring, or what?

My favorite character in the book is Wes’ mother. She is willing to sacrifice her time and energy, work hard at her job, and think and do the best thing for her children to protect them, even if it means extra work to lead them to success. I believe, that without her caring and compassionate personality, Wes could easily have had the same story as “the other Wes.” Her renunciation of sleep after the death of Wes’ father to protect her children from outsider attacks, and her decision to work extra hard, borrow money from neighbors and families to send Wes away to military school were the reasons why …show more content…

His style of writing two stories of two young boys in a parallel storyline is very well suited for the book. The parallel storyline allowed the author to successfully portray the similarities and contrasts of the two stories in one book. As I read through the book, I noticed how the author starts with the similar backgrounds of two boys, and then moves on to how they both did not have fathers growing up, then how they both got into many trouble in school and with friends, but then at last, one grows up to be successful and the other behind bars. Therefore, the explanations of the resemblances of the two Wes’ highlight the contrast at the end, and I believe that this was only made possible by the the author’s decision to use a parallel storyline which was very effective in telling this particular story. This style of writing reminded myself of Witi Ihimaera, who is the author of the novel “Whale Rider.” Ihimaera also uses parallel storyline in this novel, but with whales and humans. This style of writing suits both books very well, because the main purpose of both these books are to compare and contrast two different …show more content…

The parallel writing enhanced my astonishment for the very different fates that the two had grown up to have. The parallel writing also allowed the author to clearly portray that the difference between the two characters was an extremely thin wall, because the parallel writing illustrates how the two had very similar backgrounds with very similar stories, and still ended up having completely different lives, for example when the author wrote about a trouble that Wes got into, the author also wrote about the troubles that the other Wes had got into, in the next chapter. Therefore, the stories goes on in a parallel storyline, until the end, where their different paths were explained about. I was mostly satisfied after completing the book, because the book has taught me that every choice that we make in our daily lives and the judgements of whether the chance you are given is one of many more, or the last one, are crucial decisions that we need to consider thoroughly, otherwise we could easily become the “other Wes Moore.” However, as the author writes, “When I finished my story, the question that comes up is the one of that initiated this quest, ‘What was the difference?’ and the truth is that I don’t know. ” (Moore, 2010) I was left with a curiosity for what the exact difference between “Wes” and “the other Wes” was, and
