In the two texts The Red Umbrella by Christina Diaz Gonzalez and “Band-Aid for 800 Children” they talk about similar things but say them in different ways. The similar things they talk about or the subject of the two texts is separation or family separation. In the texts the authors portray separation in some similar and different ways. In the two texts they use different techniques but they also both use some similar techniques. A technique used in both texts is figurative language. In The Red Umbrella on line 23 it said “She sat frozen in place” that means that the mother was so sad she could not move. In the text “A Band-Aid for 800 Children” on paragraph four it says “Every child is also a job” it is stating that even though children are …show more content…
In “A Band-Aid for 800 Children” Nora Sandigo explains that the 800 children she takes care of get no help from the government and most of the things she does for them usually come at her expense. The …show more content…
In the text The Red Umbrella the setting is happening during the Cuban Revolution and that is a major impact. In the other text though “A Band-Aid for 800 Children” there is no war, there is just the big problem of separation.Another different technique is dialogue. In the text The Red Umbrella they use dialogue with the family 's big conversation. They use dialogue to explain the whole story and what is going to happen to the children. In the other text “A Band-Aid for 800 Children” they don 't really use dialogue since there is only one character and the only dialogue is when she says “Dios mio,” which means my God and when she is on the phone with someone and says two words then leaves. The last different technique is characterisation. In the text The Red Umbrella they use actions to show how they all feel. On line 29 Franky (the main characters brother) gets angry because he is leaving Cuba and he storms out of the room. In “A Band-Aid for 800 Children” there is only Nora Sandigo and she only is talking she never really explained her actions other than making coffee and getting into a car but nothing to show her
The Red Umbrella, by Christina Diaz Gonzalez and Immigration photo by Jose Hernandez-claire both show the subject of family separation. In both of these text the author and artist use similar and different techniques to show that Immigration can bring stress and sadness to families. In both The Red Umbrella and the Immigration photo they share some similar techniques. They share the similar technique of figurative language.
First off, both texts are based around immigration. The text, “Deportation at Breakfast,” is described
One way showing how they’re similar is the smaller subject of family separation and how it affects the children. This is related to the thesis because the authors mention the subject of family separation in twain of the texts. Another example of a similarity between the two texts is how they focus on making decisions that are best for the children, and not necessarily for themselves. This relates to the thesis because the authors both have their mindset based on the children and what’s best for them, which shows the author 's perspective on this matter. The final example of a similarity between the texts is how the two texts are based off real-life events.
Figurative language is often used in “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” because it shows Granny’s hallucinations. The flowery language that often personifies inanimate objects illustrates the intensity and detail of Granny’s hallucinations. For example, “Hapsy melted from within and turned flimsy as gray gauze and the baby was a gauzy shadow…” (398). Using the words “melted” and “gauzy shadow” give the reader a comprehensive picture of what Granny saw. Also, the figurative language used outside of Granny’s hallucinations help the reader understand how events occur in the story.
The story “The Red Umbrella” written by Christina Diaz Gonzalez and the photograph by José Hernández-Claire both have the same subject. That subject is Separation. This subject is a big topic in both the story and the photograph because it literally revolves around separation. Even though they have something in common; and in “The Red Umbrella”, the kids are being separated from their parents and being brought to the U.S so that they can live a better life and so that they are safe. there is also something different about the story such as the techniques that make it easier to show the subject.
In both of the texts we are able to see the theme of the
The texts also differ in how they convey the world to the reader. This can be to tell a detailed story of an individual or to tell a broader story. The author can choose to put the emphasis on either a
For instance, in both stories the characters are abandoned. In The Shawl a young boy is abandoned by his mother who no longer wishes to be with his father. In the process his older sister gets killed and is then told that his mother was the one to blame. This affected the boy highly, for when he grew up he became an alcoholic and a abusive father. While in Years of my Birth, Linda, the narrator, is abandoned at birth
By providing a specific number, $200, Singer demonstrates how simple and reasonable it is to save a child in poverty. Additionally, he repeats, “to save a child’s life,” which demonstrates exactly what a $200 donation could do for a child in poverty. As an example, Singer references a credible philosopher, Peter Unger, and acknowledges that “by his calculation, $200 in donations would help a sickly 2-year-old transform into a healthy 6-year-old.” Next, he establishes, “if you were to give up dining out just for one month, you would easily save that amount.” Singer emphasizes this to show the reader how simple it is to save $200, and, more importantly, save the life of a helpless child.
“The Red umbrella and a band aid for 800 children” are completely different in the author’s purpose. They both are trying to paint the same picture though. The red umbrella is a fictional story that tells us about what happened in the 1960’s .A band aid for 800 is a non-fictional story. Both of the texts portrayed a similar theme which was that sometimes in life things don’t go according to plan but you have to adapt to it and know that it might be a positive change.
The format of the two texts is different; Okita's work is a poem and also a letter, and Cisnero's work is a short story. Okita's poem provides simple descriptions and direct expression of ideas and details. Cisnero's short story describes the scenes and situations in rich detail, especially the parts talking about the church and religion. The texts use these attributes differently to communicate their themes and ideas
In “The Red Umbrella,” the story is written through Lucy’s point of view. She is experiencing immigration first hand by leaving Cuba during the Cuban Revolution to get to the U.S. without her parents. Sandigo in “A ‘Band-Aid’ for 800 Children,” is the guardian of 800 children whose parents were either detained or sent back to the country from where they came from because of illegal immigration. This shows that both the main characters have experience with immigration. Another way that the texts are similar is through tone.
The author connects the reader thanks to different literary and figurative devices as
There are many issues regarding the welfare of children from all over the world. Children have been repeatedly impacted by wars and conflicts in their countries. Moreover, many children from some areas do not have access to their rights such as education and health and have to suffer from discrimination, violence, abuse and sexual and economic exploitation. After the World War II, Children from all over Europe had to suffer the aftermath of the war. This is when the United Nations stepped in and created United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, or as today’s shorter term, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in December 1946 with the sole purpose to lessen the suffering by providing foods, clothing and health care.
When writing the essay the two statements provided will make you see how the wording and point of view, and how they vary based on the writer. While one proves that having experience of chimney sweepers, and how it is not easy for the kids to face that. The innocent portion is that the kids weeping and crying for the madness to end. The motive to write is to explain how both poems use the word choice and figurative language to grab the reader into wanting to hear more about the situation.
