From the two stories “The Gift of the Magi” and “The Scarlet Ibis” I feel that “The Scarlet Ibis” is the more effective short story because of the emotion that the story carries and because of the context that the story displays.”The Gift of the Magi” has a theme that touches the readers in a special way because they feel the love that the couple Della and Jim display for each other in the book. The theme of the book “The Gift of the Magi” is about love. It's a story about a poor,young couple that their love for each other is the most important thing in life, and they both give up their most precious possessions to be able to afford presents for each other on Christmas Eve. Doodle is born sick, and everyone but their Aunt Nicey thinks he will die. The dad even buys his son Doodle a coffin. When Doodle has lived for two months, the parents said they will name him William Armstrong. The narrator is very athletic and active and always wanted a brother to explore with, but his little brother Doodle was born was born ill and his mom always told him that Doodle will never be able to run and play like a normal little boy. Time passes and Doodle is now 5 and still can't walk and his brother is embarrassed by him and Doodle is afraid his brother will abandon him. There mama and daddy decided that Doodle should go to school. On sunday they find a scarlet ibis and it dies right before them and Doodle buries the body of the scarlet ibis. One day after lunch Brother took Doodle to horseback riding, then a storm approaches them and they run home to get out of the rain and the brother frustrated that Doodle is not ready for school runs in front of him leaving him behind. Then Brother sees that Doodle is not coming and rushes back to get him but finds him on the ground bleeding from his mouth, Brother yells Doodle,Doodle and no response he was

If you had a brother that you loved so much, would you want him to die? Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, Doodle and Brother had a special bond. The two of them always went to Old Woman Swamp together, they would make necklaces and crowns out of flowers and wire grass, Brother even taught Doodle how to walk. When Doodle was born, the doctor said he will not live long, so Doodle’s death was expected.

Imagine willingly sacrificing your most valued possession for someone. Or having to cut off and sell all your hair to buy someone a gift. In the Gift of the Magi the author O.Henry teaches us about the power of actions influenced by love and how sacrificing something important because of that can have a huge impact on people. In the story the characters Della and Jim sacrifice their most prized possession for each other, the characters learn they didn 't need to buy each other gifts to show their love, and even though Della and Jim lost their most valued items and the gift they got in return was no longer of any use, to them the characters were wise with giving gifts.
