Compare Huck Finn To Our Society

590 Words3 Pages
Our society and Huck Finn’s society have many similarities even though they are separated by nearly 170 years. Many of these similarities show that we haven’t really gotten any better as a society or that we have gotten worse. Some of these similarities are violence, racism, and scams/cons. Today, we see many of these things still happening and seem a lot worse compared to Huck Finn’s time. This paper will show how our society since Huck Finn’s time has gotten worse because of violence, racism, and scams.
Every day on the news you always see some act of violence, whether it’s a shooting or domestic violence. An example of violence from our modern society is “streets in Baltimore looked like a war zone early Tuesday night after a night of riots, fires, and heartbreak (Yan/Ford)”. Huck Finn and our society are related because of the amount of violence you see in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. An example of violence from Huck Finn is “All of a sudden, bang! bang! bang! Goes three three or four guys-the men had slipped around through the woods without their horses! The boys jumped for the river-both of them hurt-and as they swum down the current the men run along the bank shooting at them (Twain 114)”. This proves that our society hasn’t changed much since Huck Finn’s time and may have gotten worse.

This is also the same for Huck Finn’s time. An example of racism from our society todays is “the 2009 shooting death of Oscar Grant, an unarmed African-American man who was fatally shot by a police officer (Sholchet)”. Racism in our country has gotten better since Huck Finn’s time but is still bad because it is nearly 170 years afterwards and we still see it. An example of racism from Huck Finn is “so there I had to stick plumb until daylight this morning; and I never see a n***** that was a better nuss or faith fuller (Twain 285)”. This shows that our society since Huck Finn’s time has gotten worse because of racism
