Compare and contrast Sigmund Freud 's psychosexual theory of development and Erik Erikson 's psychosocial theory of development.
The matter of human development has been a valid one inside the human society. In this respect, there are some developmental theories that have been promoted by some of the world’s most popular psychologists. The main two theories of development are Sigmund Freud’s psychosexual theory and Erik Erikson’s psychosocial theory. Freud believed that personality develops through a series of childhood stages through which the self-satisfaction and focused on certain erogenous areas. In accordance with the psychosexual theory, the first stage is described as the oral stage in this stage of personality development of libido (sexual energy) is centered in a baby 's mouth. It gets much satisfaction from putting all sorts of things in mouth to satisfy the libido, and thus its id demands. At this stage of life are mouth orientated, such as sucking, biting, and breast feeding. Freud describes the second is the anal stage. In this stage libido has focused on the anus and the child derives great pleasure from defecating. The child is totally aware that they are a person in their own right and that their wishes can bring them into conflict with the stresses of the outside world. Erikson was highly influenced by Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytical Theory of Development. Although, at first Freud was limited to childhood based on the phallic stage, Erikson focused on developing a lifespan theory. The eight stages are as followed: Trust vs. Mistrust (infancy): The basic and fundamental psychological task is for infants to develop a sense that their needs will be met by the outside world. Is their caregiver responsive, reliable, and willing to meet their needs? That basic trust is facilitated by a responsive caregiver once an infant gets hungry, injured, or needs to be changed.

Sigmund Freud and his theories on childhood development were extremely popular and widely accepted all the way up until the 1960s (Felluga). Freud put great emphasis on the impact early childhood development had on becoming a well-adjusted adult. He claims, “The structure of the psyche receives its final form during childhood, specifically at the time of the Oedipus complex” (U. of California). This complex is essential in identifying with either the mother or father, in order to establish sexual orientation (Felluga). During this stage, from ages 4-7, the child finds ways to deal with separation anxiety, and it is also the time that the ego fully matures into the superego: “an internalization of the parental function that eventually manifested itself in your conscience” (Cherry).
I will compare and contrast Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory and Albert Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory. Erikson is a psychoanalytic theorist who believes that our unconscious mind and early experiences in life shape our development. Erikson postulates that we develop in 8 stages that he calls psychosocial stages. Bandura, on the other hand, holds that we develop based on social cognitive stages that are affected by environmental influences. Let’s start with Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory.
This theory stresses that early experiences with parents shape one’s development. Freud is best known for his psychoanalytic theory. Freud believed that sexual motivation was behind development, so his 5 stages of development are known as psychosexual stages. Erikson believed that there were 8 stages of development as we go through life. According to Freud, the primary motivation for human behavior is sexual in nature and our basic personality is shaped in the first five years of life.

Throughout the year we have learned about many different theorists who have done a great but also horrible job at explaining adolescent/ young adult development. In this paper I will be talking about Freud and Piaget, and how I think that Piaget was the better theorist than Freud when it comes to talking about development. I will also be talking about the similarities and difference between the two. For starters, what are their specific steps of development? Jean Piaget used observations of his own children to develop the four stages that we know he created today.
Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development Many researchers have tried to revise after Freud 's psychoanalysis, to show the value associated with the process and I have to follow their development (Kail, Cavanaugh, 2004). The most prominent of the so-called ego psychology was Erik Erikson. As with other postfreydistov for Erickson the greatest importance was the self and its adaptive capacity in connection with the problem of the individual. However, this does not mean that he neglected his theory of biological or social factors (Kail, Cavanaugh, 2004).
According to this theory, parts of our personality develop as we move through a series of psychological stages. Each of these stages is characterised by different demands for sexual gratification and by different methods of achieving that gratification. Freud claimed that if, as growing human beings, we do not receive an appropriate amount of gratification, we may become fixated in a particular stage which means, that we continue to have the same demands for gratification that we had at that stage, and this will remain with us for the rest of our lives, and will affect adult behaviour. What follows are the individual stages: Oral stage (birth to about 15 months) characteristic by oral stage drives.
The second stage is the anal stage. It occurs at the age of eighteen months to three years. Freud believed that in this stage children receive pleasure from holding and letting go of their bowel movements. Third is the phallic stage. It starts at age three and end around age seven.
He describes this development in a series of five fixed psychosexual stages. In each stage, the child’s energy or libido is focused on a different parts of the body, also known as an erogenous zone. The five development stages are Oral, Anal, Phallic, Latency and Genital. The first stage being the Oral stage (birth to 18 months), main focus is its gratification. For example, sucking and eating.
