When comparing and contrasting the two short stories “Battle Royal,” written by Ralph Ellison, and “Everyday Use,” written by Alice Walker, it is important to understand the time period in which the short stories took place. Battle Royal takes place during the 1940s. During this time period African Americans were trying to find their place in society after slavery. In the white’s eyes African Americans were free, but in reality blacks were still segregated and had no wealth, educational, economic, or social privileges.
