A hero is a person, typically a man, who is loved for courage, outstanding qualities and great achievements. Beowulf displays many characteristics, but he mainly displays strength, bravery, and selflessness. Beowulf ‘s fanatic future's got him through horrifying battles and never got him to give up. Batman has never given up on Gotham city, even when he felt weak or even when other superheroes did not believe in him. Beowulf and Batman are heroes that are very flexible with things and they share the same characteristics.
Batman and the Joker is a modern example of the most classic literary element of all time - the conflict between a hero and a villain. Almost every piece of literature includes these counterparts that display the author’s views of good and evil. In the Medieval Era, this concept was no different. In the anonymously written epic of Beowulf, heroes and villains are portrayed similarly to Shakespeare’s play Henry V- as war heroes and their opponents. In The Inferno, Dante Alighieri took a more spiritual view on the hero and villain, while Geoffrey Chaucer in The Canterbury Tales portrays the hero simply as one who outsmarts his opponent.
Beowulf Vs Modern Day What is a hero to you? When you think of a hero, do you see a knight in shining armor? Maybe a cape and tights? In the story Beowulf, the hero is a glorified warrior of higher class. Would that still be the case today or is it the same?
A superhero can sometimes be a symbol of hope that can destroy all evil. Some examples of super heroes are Beowulf and Superman. Beowulf in the poem “Beowulf” is a hero who fights against a monster named Grendel to defend his people; he is considered the strongest warrior around. Superman on the other hand is considered the most powerful fictional superhero on planet earth, who fights against supervillains to defend human beings. Although Beowulf and Superman are both similar when it comes to heroic traits and that they both go on long dangerous journeys they differ in that they have different heroic deeds and show different timeless values, but somewhat similar universal
The poem and movie of “Beowulf” are very different and they are also sort of similar. There are a lot more differences between the two than you would expect and while some of them are minor differences others are drastically different. Most movies are very different from the book they are made from. The biggest differences between the movie and poem were the three battles. The three battles have drastic differences.
Fear has the ability to manipulate people into believing there is danger when there is not, causing them to make rash decisions. These decisions can result in a disobedience to one’s cultural beliefs, as seen in Lord of the Flies and Beowulf. Even though the characters from Lord of the Flies and Beowulf come from cultures built around nobility and loyalty, fear tears them apart from the society they had worked hard to achieve. Although the boys from Lord of the Flies tried to keep their culture’s morals, the fear of the unknown caused the children to betray their Culture.
Chapter I- Introduction If one has to define a hero, it’ll be defined as someone who possesses strength, bravado, and ethics and most importantly he must fight evil. These characteristics apply to Beowulf and to a modern hero like Batman with slight modifications. Both of these came from different time period but both have a great impact on their society.
The story starts off with grendel fighting with a ram over annoyance and pessimistic views. Then the story goes back to Grendel’s childhood and his ages of intelligence and development. Grendel discover the earth and the humans in his childhood and faces off with some mental issues on people’s view on him. Eventually the story return to the present and Grendel talks about his time when he finds the mead hall and his experiences with it. Then the story transitions to the time he meets the dragon and asks him few questions on
Thesis: Because of Beowulf’s excellent characteristics and values not only is he considered a hero in his story, but he is also considered the basic model for modern day superheroes like Captain America.
