Comparing Letter To The Declaration Of Independence And The Constitution

In 1776, the Declaration of Independence was written and signed. The purpose of this document was to declare independence from British rule. The thirteen colonies were fed up with Britain, so they decreed that they wanted to create their own country. The Declaration of Independence united the colonies by sending a letter of grievances to the king. American patriots united together compose this letter. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution connect because they correspond with the other. These two documents share similar because they both enforce freedom rights. This war was ongoing and lasted 4 years. The North and South were going against each other because they had conflicting views regarding slavery. Since the economy of the Northern states were based on industry, they felt that slavery was inhumane and unneeded. However, in the Southern states, their economy was based on agriculture, which was solely dependent on slave labor. The North believed that slavery was wrong and wanted to abolish it, which would have, destroyed the Southern economy. After Lincoln was elected president, the tension between the North and South rose. Lincoln declared that he did not want slavery to expand westward. Eleven southern states seceded from the Union and created their own independent Confederate government. Shots were fired at Fort Sumter to begin what is known as the Civil War. After many lives were taken away, the war ended. The Union won the war, which helped end slavery. This speech is known as the Gettysburg address. Lincoln gave the speech in a time when people were tired from the restless Civil War. The speech honored the lives of the soldiers in the war, whether they were dead or alive. He reminded the people that liberty and equality were the components that made America independent. Lincoln stated “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth”. In other words, democracy will flourish. The Gettysburg Address connects to the Emancipation Proclamation because they both speak upon the topic of equality. Equality is scratched at the surface in the Gettysburg Address, whereas it’s directly tackled in the Emancipation Proclamation. On January 1 of 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. This document stated that the people enslaved in the South were legally free. Also, it restored peace and power for the Union in the middle of the war. Before the proclamation was issued, the Confederates were able to use slaves in their army. The Emancipation Proclamation connects to Black Codes because slaves were proclaimed free, but once the Black Codes were enacted their rights were striped away.
