Tim Wise’s article contains a lot of emotion and it is though the clever tactic of appealing to Logos and Pathos that Wise makes the reader really consider what he is speaking about. There is even an ethos aspect to his argument. Since Wise is a white man shaming his own race, this removes bias which in turn gives him credibility. Now to examine the Logos aspect of his argument. By using the statistic “in past two years, thirty-two young men have either carried out a mass school shooting or attempted to do so, and of these thirty-two, thirty were white teens,” Wise is using the logos aspect of a claim to really make the reader consider the gravity of the situation and take into consideration his appeal to begin profiling these kids (69). It is through his clever word choice that Tim Wise attempts to provoke an emotional response from the reader. Wise’s essay immediately opens up with a statement that grabs the readers attention. Wise says “white folk need to pull our heads out of our collective ass,” which not only calls the white race in particular, including himself, but also includes profanity which grabs the readers attention (69). Wise goes on to say that these students are using their teachers and fellow classmates as “target practice” and it is through phrases like this that he intends to invoke shock into the reader which will hopefully make them consider the argument he is making (69). Perhaps Wise’s best effort to produce emotion is when he tries to cause anger. No one likes to be at fault or told they are wrong, and Wise uses this to his advantage. All through out his article, he constantly blames the white race as a whole for this negligence and continuously reiterates that the white race is no better than any other and as a result, should be treated no different. Ravisankar begins his essay by focuses on America’s need one finding the lowest prices products. The problem he identified is by addressing the problem of workshop conditions and lack of pay . Ravisankar assumes his readers are consumers in America. His purpose in this essay is to inform America about the horrors of workshops and inform them are doing more harm than good. In order to accomplish, he appeals to Pathos by addressing the lack of humanity towards workshop workers.
When prejudices expressed by the white majority are so deeply engaged for it to be depraved overnight, a more practical solution occurs. Emotion has a way of worming through shields and walls, penetrating even the most guarded heart. No matter how stubborn and unrelenting one may be, emotion is even more stubborn and unrelenting. “There are those… like a mighty stream,” (MLK, pg. 263). The way MLK phrases what he wanted to say thunders loudly, rings clearly and boldly. Delving into detail of how the Negro is specifically suffering a loss of dignity and self importance by the segregation that treats them like petty animals, being herded, speaks much more loudly than simply stating that Negroes are degraded and treated poorly.
Thesis: Both authors in the essay “In Defense of Prejudice” and “Mommy What does ‘Nigger’ Mean?” address controversial topics in the world. While Rauch tackles the idea to protect minorities, Naylor discusses the power of language; however, they both hit on the different stereotypes presented to them throughout their own lives. By successfully using their own personal stories, both authors are able to justify their arguments and create credible personas for the audience.
The next rhetorical appeals are logos and ethos. Logos deals with persuading the audience through the use of logic and reason. Logos can be stated by using facts, statistics, and evidence to back up your information. Logos was used in this article when President Andrew D White stated, “Some players grew their hair long to provide a modicum of head protection” (Zimmerman 2014). Some studies showed that if their hair was longer it would provide more padding when they would collide with each other.
Brent Staples’s essay is still relevant today because of the fear that lives inside people who don’t understand or accept others, which often leads to authorities abusing their power so that they can feel safe while others live their lives cautiously. This relates to how both African Americans and the police live their lives in fear and with caution. The police fear African Americans due to their own prejudice reasons which causes them to abuse their authority by acting more aggressive which helps themselves feel safer and stronger. This forces African Americans to live their lives with caution and patience because if they don’t, they put themselves at a higher risk of endangering themselves. Mark Antony was a friend and follower of Julius Caesar. After Brutus gave his speech explaining to Rome why he killed Caesar, Antony walks in with Caesar’s body and begans to give a speech of his own. Mark Antony says, “The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones. ”(Ⅲ.Ⅱ. 3-4), which explains that people will always remember the bad that you did rather than remember the good. This is dignifigant because Mark Antony is trying to tell the people that Caesar was not a bad guy like Brutus pertrayed him to be.
Jonathan Edwards uses several types of writing skills to persuade his audience of God’s intentions. His use of figurative language, analogies, imagery, and repetition all emphasize Edwards’s views. He uses fear, anger, and apathy to appeal to the audience in attempt to warn his audience of God’s intentions. Jonathan Edwards uses fear in this sermon to terrorize his audience into thinking of God as someone to be feared, not someone to be loved. Throughout the sermon, Edwards uses figurative language along with imagery to frighten the audience.
Shirley Chisholm uses logos to convince her audience that her argument is logical and reasonable. Logos, Greek for “a word” or “reason”, is the use of logical thought, fact, and rationality. Chisholm points out that “Working conditions and hours that are harmful to women are harmful to men; wages that are unfair for women are unfair for men” (Chisholm 3). Chisholm uses this fact to remind her audience that anything a man can do; anything a man can handle, a woman can handle. Sex does not even need to be a part of the equation: it all boils down to being human.
Smith presents an excellent reminder to preachers that their duty must be to respect God’s word and unite it with his assembly. The preacher must let the scripture characterize the doctrine and express it in a manner that influences the hearer. Doctrine eventually must inspire our living. Smith provides a lot of examples of this within and even concludes the book with two example sermons that puts what he framed in the rest of the book to practice. The preacher has to be an exegetical escort guiding his people into the proximity of God.
Journalist and author, Dave Cullen, in his book, Columbine, redefines how his readers understand the Columbine tragedy. His purpose is to illustrate the misconceptions Americans have of the shooting by explaining how these misconceptions came about and became rooted in Americans’ minds, although they were so unbelievably wrong. Cullen creates a blunt tone in order to get straight to the facts to show who Eric really was. Through his use of rhetorical devices in this passage, Cullen unravels that Eric was not a bullied outcast like so many believe, but a psychopath.
This article has great viewpoints, use of argumentative reasoning, and shows what truly happens in the hallways of a school shooting. Ethos, Logos, Pathos, and The Challenger Reagan’s use of ethos, logos, and pathos condoles citizens across America. The President establishes his credibility and trustworthiness by sympathizing with the audience. At the beginning of the speech he states, “Nancy and I are pained to the core by the tragedy of the shuttle Challenger” (Reagan 1). He then creates a feeling of togetherness by saying, “We mourn their loss as a nation together” (Reagan 2). He achieves the purpose of ethos by sharing his feelings with everyone.
