Romeo & Juliet Through the Centuries
He was a boy, she was a girl, can I make it anymore obvious? There have been remakes, upon remakes of Romeo and Juliet’s ‘love story’ throughout the centuries since it was written. A remake from the early 60’s is the movie/musical West Side Story, a tale with Maria and Tony featuring gangs and violence. Another more lighthearted version Gnomeo and Juliet, an animated film from 2011 featuring garden gnomes and an unsurprising lack of suicide. There was a movie version made using Shakespearian tongue that was set in the 90’s, forming a somewhat confusing movie known as Romeo + Juliet, featuring, even more, gang violence. Romeo and Juliet was not a tale of two star crossed lovers, but instead just two suicidal

Psychology tells us that, there are three factors to attraction, proximity, physical attractiveness and similarity. Proximity is when you like someone the more you get to know them or are around them. Maria and Tony meeting for the first time would not be attracted to each other's personality since they had never even spoken before they fell in love at first glance. Physical attractiveness could be a factor in their ‘love’, because after they check each other out, they are psychically attracted to one another. The similarity factor is not demonstrated at all in this story because they are both not only from rivaling gangs but completely different cultures. Maria being a native Puerto Rican new to the U.S. and Tony having lived there his entire life. In West Side Story Maria is the sister of Bernardo the leader of a gang called the Sharks, while Tony is the …show more content…
This factor states that people deemed ‘attractive’ are perceived as healthier, happier, more sensitive and successful than less attractive counterparts. Even though studies show attractiveness was not correlated with self-esteem or happiness. When Romeo and Juliet lock eyes through the fish tank they are instantly attracted to each other. This is because they perceive each other as healthier and happier due to their good looks. This happens at the Capulets Halloween party when they both see each other in costume. Another factor in finding someone attractive is facial symmetry which is simply the more symmetrical a person’s face is the more they are generally attractive. Both Leonardo Dicaprio and Claire Danes (Romeo and Juliet) have fairly symmetrical faces fitting this rule. In Psychology Today, Stanton Peele writes, “Juliet asks: "Hath Romeo slain himself?’ Instead told Romeo is banished, Juliet falls completely to pieces. She is -- why depart from character -- suicidal: ‘I'll to my wedding-bed; And death, not Romeo, take my maidenhead!’” (Peele 2008). Juliet completely falls to pieces due to her unhealthy attachment to Romeo due to the initial attraction which because of passionate love. Her attachment to him is shown when she says death will take her virginity not Romeo. Juliet's insane lust nearly drove her to kill herself ahead of schedule, due to the news of Romeo's
The viewers then see Maria as innocent and almost childish. Though another scene occured after Bernardo came home from the dance. That night Maria had caused conflict because she danced with Tony, from the rival gang, enraging Bernardo. He told her what her expectations were and that she was from now on to stay within the gang. Just to add the the stress of Maria, he also added in to consider Chino as her significant
The first time we see the importance of looks in the book is when Elizabeth is adopted by the Frankensteins. First Elizabeth is described as beautiful, loyal, trusting, sympathetic, and caring toward others. Victor feels that she is more family to them than he is. In the text it states “Everyone loved Elizabeth. The passionate and almost reverential attachment with which all regarded her became, while I shared it, my pride and my delight.
How attraction is defined? Is it physical, or mental? Is it our own desire, or what society deems as desirable? Many people might think that women would give up their beauty to get better education or to have high positions. The thing that makes people think that way is gender identities, which are defined as some morals and behaviors that men and women should follow to fit into the society.
He knew he was going to cause many issues between the two families and lovers, but he still decided to do it. Another story has a very similar plot, so similar it is called the “modern day Romeo and Juliet.” This story is called West Side Story. In this story two rival street gangs from New York fight for the turf on the upper West side. This relates to Romeo and Juliet because rival gang members fall in love.
True Love vs. Physical Attraction in Romeo and Juliet and Modern Day In today’s society there is what can be called a “hookup culture”. A “hookup culture” is when individuals, usually being teenagers or males, are pulled into a certain person because of their physical attractiveness. This causes the individual to think of that person in a different way, and instead of wanting to get to know the person, this culture in the teen world today comes into play.
This would also explain why their love is merely based on looks. Although there may be people who reason differently. For example, one may say that love is to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. It could be argued that Romeo was even willing to give up his family name if Juliet took offense to it (Shakespeare; II.ii.61).
The decisions that people make can be influenced by the complicated idea of love. In the story, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, two young lovers, who are obviously not destined to be together, naively fall into the difficulties of love. Similarly, in the NEW YORK TIMES article, Romeo and Juliet Bosnia, by Bob Herbert, two real-life teenagers were put into a similar situation trying to navigate their way through the struggles of just trying to be happy with each other. Lastly, ASAPScience presents us with the Science Of Love video, which briefly explains how the different emotions and hormones can affect when and why you fall in love with someone and how it makes you feel. Because of the significant influence that science and outside
The play Romeo and Juliet written by Shakespeare and the movie West Side Story there are a lot of parallels but also many differences. In Romeo and Juliet one of the main characters name is Romeo Montague. He is a young man who fell madly in love with the daughter of the Capulets, Juliet. This would be perfectly fine and great for each family if the two families (search for synonym) didn’t have an age old grudge. While in West Side Story one of the main characters name is Tony and he is part of the gang Jets who are in a turf war with a Porto Rican gang called the Sharks.
Romeo and Juliet is a classic play by William Shakespeare, In 1968 it was adapted in a full movie, and later on in 1996 was again adapted into the big screen, both movies have so many similarities and so many differences, in the 1968 movie it is a more realistic, more true to the script, but the 1996 movie takes place in verona beach in the US, in modern times, the sword fights are actually guns, both use shakespearean english, but the most important part of any Romeo and Juliet performance, is to show their love was never meant to be, both movies do an excellent job in portraying this concept, in this essay I will explore that Romeo and Juliet’s relationship is starcrossed is portrayed by the 1968 and 1996 version through the first time they meet in the party, the balcony scene, and the scene where they are in bed. The first time Romeo and Juliet meet is at the Capulet party, this is portrayed in both movies differently, in the 1996 version Romeo is walking by an aquarium, looking at the fish, when he sees juliet, their eyes meet and follow each other, but just as they were going to come face to face, Juliet’s nurse grabs her, and takes her away to dance with Paris her future husband. In the 1968 version Romeo is far away from Juliet, and he hides behind a column, she is dancing with some people, but she is too far away, and has lots of people between Romeo and Juliet.
As shallow as it is you could say that I was immediately attracted to him because of his physical attractiveness and then also repelled by previous experiences I have had with good looking people. Physical attractiveness can be defined as how pleasing a person’s physical traits are
In the classic story of Romeo & Juliet and the modern West Side Story, there are many similarities and differences in the parallel stories that take place. Although, the West Side Story is a direct performance of Shakespeare's original play, so many of the themes are changed to fit the modern perspective nowadays. The characters have a direct relationship to each other, yet racial problems give them a new glow. Many of the events reflect each other, yet small differences give them uniqueness. Romeo & Juliet are different from the West Side Story in many ways.
Since most people don’t know how long a relationship will last, they always tend to fall for the way someone looks, which then goes long term if the person likes the other for their personality. So for someone to like another person they have to find them physically attractive. To further add to how physical attraction plays a role in relationships, let's take a look at Juliet falling in love with
Another trait eros lovers have is that they believe in love at first sight. Romeo experiences this with Juliet when he is waiting for his love Rosaline, but then he spots Juliet in the faces of many and says, “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight!/ For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.” (i .iiiii.
