Memories are the faculty by which the mind stores and remembers information. Memories help shape and fold the way we live and experience certain things that occur in our lives. I believe that memories help people in their efforts to las from the past and succeed in the present.
The life course perspective is a theoretical model that has been emerging over the last four decades. Sociologists, anthropologists, social historians, psychologists and demographers all have contributed to give it shape (Hutchison: no date). A life course can be considered as the way and journey of a person from birth to death. It is formed and impacted by the activities, occasions, events and encounters in an individuals’ life (Crawford and Walker: 2007). Exploring the life and experiences that have influenced it is an important stage in learning the significance of life course development and its impact on social work practice. Human development from life course perspective is defined as “a view point that considers the whole of a life (from
The information processing theory is a structure which rationalises how people obtain; process and store information and knowledge (Tangen & Borders 2017, p. 99). The Information processing theory involves the clinical reasoning cycle and the information processing model.
For a long time, there has been a widespread belief that the adult brain hits its best performance during its youth. However, current research findings suggest otherwise. During the middle ages, the human brain develops new skills while retaining its youthful proficiencies. If you ask those who have those entered the thick of middle age what they think about their mental limits, and you will be exposed to a lot of dissatisfaction — their brains don 't function as fast as they used to, they 're easily distractible and unfocused, and they can quickly forget anybody 's name. While some of this irritation reflects substantial decreases in mind capacity in our middle years, the insufficiencies of a middle-aged brain have likely been exaggerated
Aging is another stage in the human life. It is synonymous to other life stages like childhood, adolescence and adulthood. The process of aging affects all people differently and is highly dependent on genes (hereditary), attitudes and lifestyle (CPA, 2009).
Late Adulthood is the stage of the human life cycle where an individual nears the end of their life. The life expectancy in the United States has slowly increased over the years therefore allowed many to further analyze the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development during late adulthood. The stage of late adulthood has been emphasized by ageism and the stereotypical "old" person but, will be further educated by the normative development of the life cycle of late adulthood. For the “old” experience dramatic changes in their development as they face loss, death, and illness.
The present study is anchored on several learning theories. These theories helped the researcher in organizing the content and process of the study. These theories are: Experiential Learning Theory, the Adult Learning Theory, Cognitive Load Theory, the Spiral Approach, and the professional Development Theory.
An understanding of human memory is substantial in the study of cognition. As one of the most essential and influential cognitive process, memory affects various aspects of our daily life. Examples of its importance include functioning in everyday life, recognizing faces of people around us, remembering some of our basic skills that we gained through knowledge and experience. Mainly, without memory we would have the same lack of knowledge as newborn infants. (Eysenck, 1997)
The article relates that the rate of forgetting as a child grows older begins to match the rate of forgetting that is expected of adults. Dr. Bauer a great deal of memory loss between the ages of three and seven. Dr. Bauer also states that the earliest memories verbalized are from
Considering human development is a lifelong process of all known psychic. In the beginning period of life from birth throughout childhood, childhood to adolescence, and adolescence to adulthood enormous changes take place. Throughout the process, each person evolves into attitudes and morals that guide decisions, relationships, and understanding. This document will focus on birth through age 2. This is considered the crucial stage. This is the stage where all development begins and the specific markers will take shape.
In some cultures, people believe that cognitive decline is inevitable as people get older. Cutler et al. (As cited in Becca & Ellen, 1994) found that most Americans think there is no doubt that their memory will decline in old age, and Oregon State university (2013) illustrated that it is a natural thing that cognitive functions will decline with age. It is true that aging is one of the most important factors that cause cognitive decline, however, it is not inevitable. Not all cognitive functions will decrease because of aging, and there exist many other factors that are associated with cognitive decline. Kathy (2013)
My understanding of Chapter 15 and the videos has changed about my view of the cognitive functioning of late adulthood. According to the Development Psychology textbook, the definition of late adulthood is when citizens are around their sixties or seventies and last until death. Life expectancy is the number of years that a person will live if they were born in a particular time. Also the United State is ranked fifth in the life expectancy which is seventy-eight years old. Also the cause of life expectancy can be based on the gender. For example, a females might live longer than males because they are more resistance to infections and degenerative diseases than males. I learned the difference between Alzhemier’s disease and dementia, some of the different type of theories, and three important influences on the cognitive functioning of older adults from Chapter 15 and the video. These important information changed my view of the cognitive functioning of late adulthood.
My paper is on late adulthood. I will be discussing the Erikson’s stages of development, from birth to old age, I will also talk about other theories as well, like Piaget and Kohlberg. I chose late adulthood because I plan on working in the nursing home when I finish school. Erikson believe that in order for a person to grow they had to go through all these stages of development. Maslow believe in prioritizing, he believed that you had to meet your basic needs before you could move up to another level. My main focus throughout this paper will be on late adulthood, which is ego integrity versus despair.
Starting from a early age you start to develop a unique identity and by the time you reach adulthood that unique identity has fully formed, you also reach mid life crisis stage as an adult and eventually surrender to old age. As adults we continue to learn and grow from our experiences and continue to develop emotionally and physically. The physical changes however are not always positive ones, as we grow older our bodies tend to grow weaker and our bones deteriorate. Adults go through many stages of physical changes throughout early and middle adulthood with the final stage of physical changes occurring in late adulthood. It is later adulthood that we start to develop wrinkles, body deficiencies, and an overall deterioration of the body Psychological
The findings of this research are limited to the data and tests obtained from the subjects that illustrate the relationship between study habits on memory recall.
