The Iliad versus Troy
As the great military general and philosopher Sun Tzu said, “The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting”. The Greeks utilize a huge wooden horse in order to defeat the Trojans. The movie, Troy, and The Iliad contain the same plot, yet there are numerous differences that are depicted. Nevertheless, despite the countless similarities, The Iliad is far more superior to that of the movie.
The Trojan Horse is present in the epic and movie. First, the Greek built a huge horse structure that was filled with men. The Trojans, who thought that the Greeks surrendered, found the huge horse structure. The Trojans “dragged the horse through the gate” (Hamilton 207). Moreover, this led to the destruction of the great Troy. The Greeks who deceived the Trojans returned with their ships therefore the army was awaiting the opening of the doors. The soldiers of the Greek got out of the wooden horse and in no time “Troy was burning” (Hamilton 207). In conclusion, Troy was demolished because of the Trojan horse.
Helen of Troy was the significant cause of the war between the Greeks and Trojans. Primarily, Paris, who chose Aphrodite in the contest of beauty against Hera and Pallas Athena, was to be awarded the fairest woman. As a result, the fairest woman on Earth was “Helen, the

In the epic, the gods affect the war immensely. For instance, if it weren’t for Aphrodite, Paris would have died sooner. Aphrodite tore the strap that kept the helmet on, so that he would be free from Menelaus’ hand. Aphrodite then “caught up in a cloud and took back to Troy” (Hamilton 192). On the other hand, there was no involvement of the gods in the movie. For instance, when Achilles cut off the golden head of the statue of Apollo, nothing happened. To sum up, in the movie, Troy, the gods were not present, yet in The Iliad they played major roles throughout the
More so Troy were tired of having firing feuds with Sparta. Uncontrollable the love between Helen and Paris caused many downfalls for Troy. Menelaus was furious on his new findings coming back from his father’s funeral to seek his adoring wife leaving with Prince Paris of Troy. Menelaus the King of Sparta wanted his wife returned safely to Sparta so he can handle the difficulties with Helen his wife. Paris refused to relinquish his one true love to her death.
The age gap brought speculation into whether or not the Iliad had precise information, it had been a prolonged time since the war occurred. There were many similarities between both the movie and the Iliad. Such as, the reason of the war, the famous notion of Odysseus, and the gifted warrior that helped Agamemnon and Menelaus defeat the Trojans. The main reason that caused the Trojan War, according to Homer, was
Both works contain an intense amount of gore and brutality, but even amongst all the chaos of battle there are glimpses of humanity. Although the soldiers of ancient Greek armies fought for different reasons than those of modern warfare, throughout history heroes have shown hints of mercy in their battles. Menelaus was a hero of The Iliad. He fought
In Homer’s Odyssey, gods and other supernatural beings dominated every aspect of mortal life. All living things and phenomena that occur in the world can be traced back to the gods. Seeing as how gods are responsible for the lives of mortals and the state of the natural world, performing deeds that anger the gods would prove to be disastrous while performing deeds that please the gods would prove to be beneficial. Odysseus’ journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War was took ten years due to angering gods like Poseidon and Helios. However, it was through Athena’s aid that he was able to make it back home.
A theme in both the epic and the film is: if one is respectful to the gods he will be helped, but if one is disrespectful he will be punished. The first example of help is shown in the poem through Odysseus’ rescue from Calypso’s island. Odysseus was stuck on the island against his will and wanted to get back home. (Homer 1.56-57)
How I wish you’d died there, killed by that strong warrior who was my husband once’” (Homer, Iliad 3. 480-482), this stirred up conflicts on the ground between the mortals and made Helen and other Trojans dislike Paris even more. Goddesses like Athena were out for revenge in the Iliad because Paris did not see her fit for the golden apple that was to be given to the fairest Goddess, in the Judgement of Paris. So Athena and Hera, who mainly used her marriage to Zeus to do her dirty work, plotted against the Trojans.
The Trojan War was started because as seen in the myth of the golden apple, Zeus believed that there were too many people on the earth. Therefore Zeus devised a scheme that would solve this situation, with the help of Eris. They created a golden apple for the “Fairest” and gave it to Hera, Aphrodite and Athena,
Athena is known as the goddess of war. Odysseus was aided by her ideas on how to regain power through her tactical skills. The fact that the goddess warrior was on his side through the journey home, reclaiming his land, and killing the suitors was a huge advantage. Athena is very intelligent in how she strategizes and won wars in the past. Some may argue that Odysseus is the real hero but there were many times throughout The Odyssey where he needed Athena’s protection and input of logical ideas.
Nicole Tschida ENG 210 Paper 1 2-26-18 The Iliad and The Consequences of War The plot of the Iliad takes place in the middle of the war between the Greeks and the Trojans that lasted for ten years. This conflict according to Homer and ancient Greek mythology occurred because the Trojan prince Paris abducted Helen, the wife of Menelaus, brother to king Agamemnon. In this paper, I will be examining the consequences of war, as outlined by Homer.
Homer’s depiction of the nature and character of war itself seem to be unmerciful in its raw form. Throughout the course of book seven of the epic, The Iliad, many events and actions of the characters are in the motive of war and winning a battle. A war in its raw form is where characters are pitted against other characters for the sake of a battle and defeating their enemy, whether they want to annihilate them or to win the spoils of war. The characters in this book when fighting in battles appear to be almost patriotic for their army and are unmerciful. They are passionate in the art of fighting and are eager for it.

Iliad is recognized as one of the most famous ancient monuments of literature. The full understanding of this epic poem is hardly possible without thorough analysis of its main characters. Among all the episodes of the Trojan War, Homer chooses the moment of Achilles’ wrath and thus creates a poem in which he becomes the central figure. From the Ancient Greeks’ point of view, Achilles represents the ideal of manliness and pure heroism, for he is brave and fights for heroics, not profits. Today, one can agree with this interpretation, yet Achilles is probably the most controversial character because he combines various personality traits and acts in accordance with his ambiguous nature.
The Iliad and the Odyssey, however, vary in chronological setting. The Odyssey shows Odysseus’s ten year struggle to return home after the Trojan War. This was when Odysseus fights the mystical creatures while facing the wrath of the gods. During this time, Penelope and Telemachus drive away suitors hence waiting for Odysseus to return. Later odyssey slaughters the suitors vying for Penelope and takes Ithaca’s throne.
