The Scarlet Ibis In the “Scarlet Ibis” James Hurst, weaves together a tragic story following the narrator and his disabled younger brother, Doodle. Throughout Doodle’s life, he had always been caged in but with the aid of Brother’s persistence and infrequent cruelty, Doodle learns to extend past his boundaries. Brother’s motivation stems from his selfishness in wanting an unhandicapped brother to avoid the embarrassment of s six-year old incapable of walking. Battling his own internal struggle between right or wrong, Brother tries to mend the split between the caused by shame and ignorance.
Although both stories are based around brothers, only one includes the brother throughout the story. The Sniper and the Scarlet Ibis are similar because they both involve the main character’s brothers. The difference between these two is that in The Sniper the brother is barely mentioned. We later discover that the other sniper the main character shot was his brother in the end. In the Scarlet Ibis the brother was mentioned throughout the story and was actually one of the main characters.
The ideas presented in the story The Scarlet Ibis and the movie Simon Birch lead to an intrigued way of thinking. Simon Birch and Doodle having disabilities is a major relevance to both stories, since Simon and Doodle have disabilities, one can easily see how their characters are related, but also how they differ in thought, word, and deed. Also, symbolism plays a major role in The Scarlet Ibis and Simon Birch, by representing future events. Another idea present in both stories is that both Simon and Doodle are seen as miracles from God, but in their own ways.
The other story was 2 brothers who had a good relationship. Doodles brother was kind of pushy to Doodle, but he wanted Doodle to do good in life.as you can see all relationships between people are different.
In " The Sniper" and "The Scarlet Ibis" the protagonists have weird with their brothers. In the story "The Sniper" the protagonist shoots his brother who is on the opposite side of the civil war. The sniper has to shoot out an enemy vehicle but after lighting a smoke someone shoots at him. Then he shoots the person after tricking the enemy but the enemy turns out to be the brother. The second story " The Scarlet Ibis" is about a guy who is ashamed of his little brother.
The Narrator tried to help his brother and make him normal. He was going to teach hi how to walk, run and do things normal children could do. But he did it for the wrong reason. In the story the “The Scarlet Ibis” written by James Hurst, Doodle’s brother only thinks of himself, trying to make Doodle “normal”; this embarrassment towards Doodle this leads to his death.
The movie Simon Birch and James Hurst’s short story, “The Scarlet Ibis,” tell different stories about different boys. Simon Birch grew up in a town where he was alienated from the others around him because of his abnormally small size. The only people who really understood him were his best friend Joe and Joe’s mother. Doodle, on the other hand, lived a relatively isolated life surrounded by only his family. Brother was Doodle’s closest friend, but even Brother didn’t fully accept Doodle because of his frail body and weaknesses.
In the short story it has a small family and a young boy William Armstrong A.K.A Doodle, Doodle has many health problems, one of which is the disability to walk. When the narrator; or Doodles brother is forced to take him wherever he goes “Take Doodle with you” and the narrator has had enough and decides he is going to teach his brother to walk. So in the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, It shows a story of a small family who undergo many difficulties and two brothers that have to be together all the time. After many months and multiple seasons of trying to teach doodle to walk, Doodle finally learns to walk and everyone was so happy “Then Mama began to cry and ran over to him, hugging him and kissing him.”
The stories The Sniper and The Scarlet Ibis show us that the protagonist have a relationship with their brother. The Sniper shows us that the protagonist might have had a good relationship with his brother. The story does not really tell us that he even had a brother but when the protagonist shot him not knowing it was him. He crawled over there and look at the body and it was his brother and was very sad. The second story shows us that the protagonist had a good relationship with his brother.

At the beginning Brother does not love Doodle like most siblings would, but as the story progresses Brother shifts from being cruel and selfish to being loving and caring. Brother is portrayed as cruel, selfish, and loving. He is all three of these characteristics throughout different parts of the story. Although the name “Brother” may not be his name, it is assumed that he is called “Brother” because the story did not mention otherwise.

These are some of the reasons why. The narrator has this little brother who can’t walk or crawl. When Doodle is old enough to go to school, the narrator teaches how to swim, run and do other things.
The Sniper written by Liam O’Flaherty is about a man that is on the lookout on top of a building and when he finally claims a victim, the corpse reveal is his brother. The Scarlet Ibis by by James Hurst is about two brothers that are birds and one is crippled. The normal brother is embarrassed of his crippled brother so he teaches him to walk. One day, they were running through a storm and the normal one left his crippled brother back. When the brothers guilt finally drives him back to get him, he has already passed.
In the dramatic short story Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst a boy named Doodle and his brother encounter many obstacles similar to the brothers in the movie Simon Birch even though they come from starkly different family situations. Doodle and Simon were always the underdogs and wanted to be accepted. Doodle wasn’t accepted by his brother whereas Simon’s brother always looked at him like an equal. There brothers teach them many things like baseball and how to walk. Simon and Doodle are always happy and never sad or down.

Showing how they are alike, different, and more alike than different it shows with the details and characterization of the characters how the two characters are compared and contrast to each other. Throughout the story it shows how doodle take on physical and mental obstacles not within his abilities to be able to achieve. In the story The scarlet Ibis the author shows details and characteristics to show how the scarlet ibis and Doodle are alike, in the story, it tells how the bird is from tropical lands meaning it is in an environment it is not adapted to survive in, while Doodle is stuck in a world where he has to try to live up
Throughout The Scarlet Ibis, the narrator attitude toward his brother negative. Doodle, the narrator’s brother, was born with a disability. He was paralyzed. When Doodle was born, his family believed he would die right away. The narrator was disappointed and upset because his brother was different, the narrator wanted a normal brother; however, throughout the short story the narrator’s negative attitude starts to change.
