West Side Story and Moonrise Kingdom are two movies that were both heavily influenced by William Shakespeare’s movie (Romeo and Juliet). While the two films are similar in terms of the general plot and character rolls, West Side Story sought to present the story in a more relevant context while Moonrise Kingdom produced a story in a very unique way.
West Side Story, which came out in 1961, makes several adaptations to the original play to make it more relevant and relatable. This story takes place in New York City around the time the film was released. I have read numerous different books in my Contemporary Literature class; I have chosen to compare and contrast The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls and The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. Ironically, they both have meanings that are fairly relatable for anyone; we are all impressionable as children however our innocence is often stripped away by life’s challenges. The two contemporary literature books I chose, both show and help to explain how our life experiences influence who we grow up to be. Jeannette Walls wrote The Glass Castle, it is the story of her life growing up in a somewhat dysfunctional yet loving family. Romeo and Juliet is a classic play by William Shakespeare, In 1968 it was adapted in a full movie, and later on in 1996 was again adapted into the big screen, both movies have so many similarities and so many differences, in the 1968 movie it is a more realistic, more true to the script, but the 1996 movie takes place in verona beach in the US, in modern times, the sword fights are actually guns, both use shakespearean english, but the most important part of any Romeo and Juliet performance, is to show their love was never meant to be, both movies do an excellent job in portraying this concept, in this essay I will explore that Romeo and Juliet’s relationship is starcrossed is portrayed by the 1968 and 1996 version through the first time they meet in the party, the balcony scene, and the scene where they are in bed. The first time Romeo and Juliet meet is at the Capulet party, this is portrayed in both movies differently, in the 1996 version Romeo is walking by an aquarium, looking at the fish, when he sees juliet, their eyes meet and follow each other, but just as they were going to come face to face, Juliet’s nurse grabs her, and takes her away to dance with Paris her future husband. In the 1968 version Romeo is far away from Juliet, and he hides behind a column, she is dancing with some people, but she is too far away, and has lots of people between Romeo and Juliet.
Located in the center of town, Sammy’s A&P is five miles out from the beach; if any closer, the girls’ attire may not cause the same uproar Sammy witnesses. Unfortunately for Queenie, as Lengel finished quibbling with truck inventory, he decries the girls’ dress, noting “this isn’t the beach” (653). Queenie led a furious attempt to refute Lengel’s claim, stating “my mother asked me to pick up a jar of herring snacks” (652). Her proclaimed innocence is futile, however, as Lengel denounces their behavior as characteristic of “juvenile delinquency” (653). Upon this decree, Sammy recognizes the girls hastily about to leave and announces to Lengel, “I quit,” following with “you didn’t have to embarrass them” (654).
