Chief Powhatan or his proper name Wahunsenacawh was the paramount chief of The Powhatan Indians. The estimated population was 14,000–21,000 people in eastern Virginia when the English settled in Jamestown. These people are called Virginia Algonquians because they’re language is eastern-Algonquian. Initially, there were various different Algonquian tribes in Virginia, including the Powhatan, Pamunkey, Mattaponi, and Chickahominy tribes.
