Tensions between the US Environmental Protection Agency and the steel industry have been present since the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency in the December of 1970, but in recent years with more and more laws cracking down on limiting the emissions from the companies a lot more is at stake for the stakeholders. The Environmental Protection Agency laws affect many people, including the Environmental Protection Agency itself, the steel producing companies, and the employees who work at the steel producing companies. The effects of the laws cause tensions to develop because each stakeholder is invested in what happens in relation to the EPA and steel industry. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (or EPA) is an agency of the federal government. The EPA has a mission to …show more content…
The article quotes ‘As concern with the condition of our physical environment has intensified, it has become increasingly clear that we need to know more about the total environment — land, water, and air. It also has become increasingly clear that only by reorganizing our Federal efforts can we develop that knowledge, and effectively ensure the protection, development, and enhancement of the total environment itself.’— President Richard M. Nixon, special message to the Congress about reorganization plans to establish the Environmental Protection Agency, July 9, 1970,” and most people supported the formation of the EPA, except companies who were going to be affected negatively. Currently, the EPA is faced with a mix of opinions from a whole lot of people which creates tensions for the agency. The EPA makes laws to better the environment, but steel companies do not support the laws because it limits their business and costs the companies more
He also used information from the several annual reports of the Council on Environmental Quality starting in 1970, and cites as so. In his notes at the bottom of his work, he added that the feels the best overall source of information about the Nixon Administration’s environmental record was from these annual reports. He includes direct quotations from Nixon himself, from Nixon’s message transmitting his plans to establish the EPA and NOAA to congress. These quotes were taken from Reorganization Plan No. 3. To further show how Nixon’s environmental work is often overlooked, Train makes mention of the book Nixon himself wrote, In the Arena, where he briefly mentioned his work with the environment in the footnote.
It talks about this in chapter 7, where if an agency, such as city officials or the EPA group fails to work with the needs and desires of the community, the agency faces difficult problems with complying with the expectations and directives. The community of Flint went to the city and tried working with the tap water problem, but the city officials kept telling them that ‘the water met federal standards”. However, the city was lying to the community, where they altered the results to show the it met the federal standards. They took 60 samples of water instead of 100, they pre-flushed the water to get better results, and they chose slower steam which alters the results. They changed the results so they would save a lot of money and not deal with the problem.
In Senator Jay Rockefeller’s statement on Inhofe Resolution, Rockefeller argues that the resolution of disapproval is unsafe and a threat to many jobs of West Virginians. This sixteen minute speech was given on June 20, 2012 in front of the state senate. The Inhofe Resolution of disapproval is a resolution wanting to block the Environmental Protection Agency’s MACS or MACT rule. The rule limits mercury, acid gases, and other toxic pollution from power plants. The resolution of disapproval was proposed by Senator James Inhofe, who wanted to block the rule to “end Obama’s war on coal.”
Much like Theodore Roosevelt previously, Carter lobbied for the creation and passage of environmental laws and was active in environmental concerns since he gained office (Howard, 2013). Out of the several environmental bills passed during Carter’s administration, there are two that serve as his greatest victories: the Superfund legislation and the Alaskan National Interests Land Conservation Act (Howard,
In matters of environmental preservation, one has two options; extol the virtues of economic expansion, or shelter the wounded environment- an angel and devil perched upon shoulders situation of sorts. In building his argument, human rights activist and 39th president of the United States of America Jimmy Carter displays a commendable zeal for his cause whilst skillfully utilizing the element of persuasion to transcend the “devil”. No one is blind to the suffering caused by environmental abuse, but Carter draws a dagger of emotion, veiled by stylistic phrasing and subtle remarks, and plunges it into the heart of his opposers with this passage, ensuring no blind eye may be turned to the fate of his country. Changing the opinion of an opposer
Since the day President Nixon enacted the National Environmental Policy Act, major advances changed the environmental area. On December of 1970, Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Before EPA, there was no central authority, but now the protection of the environment is strong.
Bill McKibben and Derrick Jensen were born in 1960 in the U.S.A., and both have accomplished successful academic backgrounds. McKibben graduated from Harvard University in 1982, and Derrick Jensen graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a degree in Mineral engineering in 1983. Both are environmental activists and have written many articles and books. Two of their articles “Waste Not, Want Not” by Bill McKibben and “Forget Shorter Showers” by Jensen are published in the Bedford Reader book (557-567). When we analyze these articles both authors agree on consumers contribution to environmental pollution, but they have different points of views concerning whether individuals or industrialists cause more environmental pollution.
Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club, states that, “The EPA’s water quality study confirms what millions of Americans already know—that dirty oil and gas fracking contaminates drinking water” and that “the EPA chose to leave many critical questions unanswered” (Malewitz). It is critical that the EPA works with the general public to answer every question so that we can begin to work together to understand the complexity of this
Exxon had already lost a lot of reputation. Also, there was no way to mitigate the risks caused by the environment. Hence, I am of the opinion that this is not the best place for EM to build an image as a responsible environmental citizen.
It required the Environmental Protection Agency to develop and enforce regulations to protect the public potent air quality which could be hazardous to human health. The Clean Water act established a basic structure for regulating pollution which is discharged into the waters of states in the United States. This act also Gave EPA the authority to implement pollution control programs. As a result of the “Silent Spring,” federal legislations were passed as a call to action to change the habits of humans before we destroy the thing that gives us all
Our environment had been endangered of becoming unsafe, threatening, and even deadly. “The water we drink, the food we eat, the very air that we breathe, are threatened with pollution. Our parks are overcrowded, our seashores overburdened. Green fields and dense forests are disappearing.” Johnson stresses that the health of people and environment is at risk because Americans have allowed for the destruction of nature to get out of hand, and causing both the Earth and human health at risk of becoming an ugly America, due to –as Johnson references- the “Ugly American” (“Great Society”).
Mission Statement: The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) serves as a means to help protect the health of all Americans and their environment. In their efforts to do so the EPA 's purpose is to protect U.S. citizens from being exposed to possible health issues in all aspects of their lives, whether it be at home, school, or even work. These efforts are being made all over the U.S. to try and reduce external costs on U.S. citizens, by using the best info available to the EPA about health risks. Not only is the EPA advocating for the protection of the environment, but U.S. policies are having a larger presence of reforms that concern every aspect of the environment, ranging from natural resources to energy and transportation.
This landmark symposium made the introduction of the federal government involvement in environmental regulation. In 1955 congress passed its first environmental legislation which was upheld and supported strongly by the public and improved science. After this huge merge the United States environmental protection Agency and the effective public policy toward the environmental were instituted. (Usepa,
The protection of environment is crucial to the wellbeing of this planet. The job of government is to protect and preserve the land on which its people live. However, there is a bill being considered that completely goes against this, one that calls for the eradication of the Environmental Protection Agency, a government program created to protect human and environmental wellbeing through their regulation of laws. I urge you to oppose bill H.R. 861 - the termination of the Environmental Protection Agency - because of the ways that the EPA protects air, water, and land.
A Case Study on Polluter’s Dilemma I. Background/Point of View On a small plastic manufacturing, Jonica Gunson works as an environmental compliance manager. The company where she is working with is now facing a serious situation that needs to have a fast and decisive decision, decision whether to invest or not to invest money on new technology that will help decrease or as possible eliminate the level of toxic in the water which is flowing from the back of the factory up to lake. Though the company is compliant with the levels of emissions set by the Environmental Management board, the manager sees that environmental procedures for this specific toxic are sheathing behind logical evidence, particularly that there is a protest from a certain scientist that is publish in the newspaper.
