The most meaningful or should I say the reading that intrigued me the most in part one is that of Compassion written by The Dalai Lama. The statement “I think that every human being has an innate sense of “I” (The Dalai Lama.p.83) is what peaked an interest for me, I interpreted that to mean that at some point of time in life everyone thinks of themselves. People may naturally have a desire to seek happiness, obtaining a sense of peace that will make them happy within life. He goes on to say the fact that human beings are intelligent can in some ways hinder their happiness. In my opinion in some situations knowing too much can ruin your happiness. According to The Dalai Lama intelligence can sometimes create a quite unhappy state of mind (p.84). Overall this essay is about people as individuals deciding to be good warm hearted people. The action of one person can create a better environment around them. You do not have to follow others to change your …show more content…
I sometimes wonder why is it that I reframe from helping others or being compassionate to certain situations. I believe it is knowing that some individuals are dishonest that causes me to have trust issues. I may see a person who says that they need money for food and I may want to help them but my sense of mistrust causes me to second guess my actions. I must admit that this essay caused me to want to change the way I view certain situations. I understand now that it is not my job to worry about if the homeless person is being honest about needing money for food if I want to help it has to be unconditionally. I have to make changes within myself and my positive changes may cause another person to change also. I know that I cannot help everyone and I may not be happy all the time, but at least if take steps to make positive changes I could make a
When you read the essays “on Compassion” and “ Just walk on by: Black Men and public space” you get a sense of the issues that are happening. In “On Compassion” Barbara Ascher talks about the experience she had while witnessing an interaction between a woman and a homeless man while in the essay “Just walk on by: Black Men and public space” Brent Staples talks about the experiences he’s had when coming in contact with other people on the street. Barbra uses specific details to describe the homeless man she sees, such as “Buttonless shirt” and “baggy trousers.” when she uses these words she is expressing the distressed look he conveys.
The capacity to learn is a construct familiar to all animals and some plants, so what makes us so special? There is an advantage to trees being tall and supported by rigid and woody vascular systems. The advantage is simply that most plants grow towards the sunlight to ensure a constant rate of photosynthesis by avoiding obstruction. The tallest tree in the forest never gets outshined, or rather out shadowed, by other trees. Thus, over millions of years natural selection has allowed for coniferous trees to reach heights up to fifty feet, since most of the areas that they inhabit tend to be low on the ultra violet index.
Throughout literature, religion, and life, knowledge continually causes sorrow. Books commonly read in a high school curriculum include Malcolm X Learning to Read and Frederick Douglass Learning to Read display the sorrow affiliated with knowledge. The quotation above is directly from the bible and considering the bible is one of the most respected books in the world the quote creates great authority. One book that displays the idea that “for in wisdom is much grief, and in increase knowledge is increase sorrow” is Frederick Douglass Learning to Read. This books follows the life of a slave, Frederick Douglass, who realizes that while he thought reading would give him a new lease on life, it actually took away his happiness.
The struggle to be known is an important factor in the question of what makes humans human. If a single person could change the world, the fate of the person and their world would become predictable. Granger, from Fahrenheit 451, demonstrates that humans in their egotistical ways tend to think that they can change the world if they try hard enough, but it simply isn’t realistic. He is told to “pound” this idea into his mind in order to keep his head below the
In Barbara Lazear Ascher’s essay titled “On Compassion” Ascher considers the concept of compassion by utilizing her own encounters with the homeless as a vehicle to make her argument. In her argument, she interprets compassion as an abstract concept, and portrays empathy as a building block to compassion; making the argument that to be a more tolerant society one must first learn empathy in order to demonstrate true compassion. When analyzing Ascher’s rhetoric, her style, diction and rhetorical devices reveal a skeptical tone and serve a greater purpose in appealing to the reader’s sense of ethos and pathos. Namely, Ascher’s use of first-person narrative and word choice like “we” appeals to the reader’s sense of ethos, which eventually builds
In one circumstance, we may feel the need to give to those who are poor to keep them from getting in our personal space; and in other circumstances we feel that we give to others out of the kindness of our heart. I completely agree with Ascher and her views on compassion, because I have been in similar situation where I have questioned why people give money, and whether they give with a whole heart or out of necessity. Furthermore, this essay can teach us plenty of lessons that can be utilized throughout our lives so we can teach others and make them aware of the need to be more
Prepare For Future Some people say that human have to eat other creatures, because human used too many years and experienced too many difficulties for standing on the top of food chain. Human deserves to eat other animals. In Buddhism, it is publicize that every life is equal. With this education, the Dalai Lama always thinks things in moral ways. Thus, he writes an essay called “Ethics and the New Genetics”.
In her essay, “On Compassion”, Barbara Lazear Ascher analyzes the idea of compassion and the -------- of the homeless by the those more fortunate. She presents two instances in which homeless people are gifted with money or food items and ponders the motivation behind these acts. ----------------------. Targeting a broad audience, specifically people belonging to a higher socioeconomic standing, Ascher emphasizes the need for awareness of the adversity of the homeless, establishes that one must learn “compassion” for the homeless and less fortunate, and poses the question of whether the motivation for the “compassion” is relevant.
Compassion is needed in situations of hard times, which is why the novel Night shows a great importance of compassion because showing kindness in the smallest way can make a big difference. To begin, Elie showed compassion towards his father. For instance, Elie stayed alive, and didn’t give into the beatings, he gave up most of his rations of food and always made sure his father came before himself. If Elie were to just give up, and go on being like the rest of the father and sons in the novel, his father would see no purpose to staying alive. Next, one of the Polish guards tell the Jews, “hell doesn’t last forever.”
Sometimes when asked to define a word that everyone knows the meaning of, it can be hard to articulate the true meaning of that word. Compassion seems to be one of them. Gregory Boyle does his best to define compassion by saying “compassion isn’t just about feeling the pain of others; it’s about bringing them in toward yourself” (75). If we are to be as compassionate as God is compassionate, then we must destroy stereotypes and break boundaries that separate the marginalized from the non-marginalized. Boyle goes on to try to further explain compassion by giving explicit examples from his life where compassion was shown, by either him or another human being.
That being said, releasing other people's’ expectations will, in turn, restore help to improve the self-impression of another individual. Often everyone is focused on one thing, the benefits for themselves. We live in a world that sets up ranks, however, in reality, we are all equal, or should be. Doing something cordial for the minority is unexpected, but life-changing. In the photograph by Eric Magnuson, it illustrates a young girl having a conversation with a homeless man on Pearl Street in New York City.
There is an important theme in the story Flowers for Algernon By Daniel Keyes. It is a fiction novel about a thirty year old man who has been battling to overcome an intellectual deficit all of his life and has an opportunity to become more intelligent than he ever had imagined through an experimental operation. He takes the opportunity and in a few weeks he becomes a genius for a short time before his itelligence receded as fast as it increased. The author includes many important themes throughout the passage. Daniel Keyes develops the theme that intelligence doesn’t affect who you truly are through Charlie’s experiences both before and after the operation.
Compassion By:Sofia Torre “The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.” - Albert Schweitzer. Compassion is when you help someone through their misfortunes and sufferings. Compassion is letting someone else feel understood when they are troubled or distressed .
Many people are stuck on what other people want them to be. Most people get bullied into silence and i was like that at out point until i found myself in actions of helping other. Most of the people nowadays have no idea what self expression is or what it means. I want to keep helping people find them true self. I want to see people in this world become the real them and stop hiding behind something they're not and have a self expression for the world to see.
We can also find a similar concept in emotional intelligence. The inception of emotional intelligence was there to show that here is need to inculcate and sharpen our skill in certain positive traits and always avoid the negative traits. Developing one’s emotional intelligence level helps to develop one’s level of emotional maturity. Then the people will be able to handle and control their own emotions in a more developed
