Competition is the act of rivalry for supremacy. The majority of humans have been exposed to competition before. It is in the economy, sports, businesses, and in schools. Competition leads to better products and results because it pushes people to improve, it inspires people to be more innovative, and it helps develop resilience in people. However, there are some people who disagree with this point of view because competition involves someone losing, while someone gains off their losses. Alfie Kohn spoke out against competition saying, “Children succeed in spite of competition, not because of it” (Kohn). He goes on to explain that Teresa Amabile, a psychology professor at Brandeis University, did a study on creativity in children (Kohn). She asked the kids to make “silly collages;” some of the children competed for a prize while others did not (Kohn). The result was those that competed produced collages that were “much less creative less spontaneous, complex and varied than the others” (Kohn). He also goes on to say that “If one child wins, another cannot. This means that each child comes to regard others as obstacles to his or her own success” (Kohn). But …show more content…

For example, if you eliminate competition in sports, there is no point in playing the game because the objective of the game is to win. To win the games athletes have to be at their best, and they can only do that by practicing to improve. Athletes learn to take advantage of their losses and improve their performance from it. An article from the Contributor, states that “Competition is important in sports so that athletes develop their highest potential and set goals higher than their competition” (Contributor). By setting goals, athletes can reach their full potential and improve. Athletes focus on improving what they struggle in and try to advance their skills in that specific area.
