It is difficult to imagine life without computers; these machines are a vital part of today’s society. Almost every job that is available today requires the use of a computer. Computers have made a huge impact on not only the United States, but the whole world. However, it has not always been this way. The first computer only came into design by a need to get an advantage over the Germans in World War II. There is a long history of production and design leading to the advanced computers that are available today. Believe it or not, a handheld smartphone is actually more powerful than the computer that landed the first men on the moon! The growth of computers has changed society and everyone’s daily lives. While not everyone owns a computer, …show more content…

X-rays and computed tomography or CT scans are a major breakthrough in medical technology that have helped save many lives. They help obtain more information about a patient before diagnosing by producing images of the body’s internal structure. CT scans use a computer to collect X-rays to create a multidimensional view of the patient’s body (Conyers, para 1). Another medical machine used is the Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI, which is used to determine the condition of soft tissue. It produces a computerized image from the use of magnetic fields. It creates a picture of the activity in the are being scanned. Without the use of computers, doctors would need to preform invasive surgery in order to find physical and operational defects within the body as a form of diagnosis (Conyers, para 2). Medical research has also advanced with the use of computers. Doctors and scientists have a way to collect all data and information and share it in large databases. They can extend their knowledge and improve medical procedures from input of doctors from around the world. The yearly predictions for the strain and severity of the flu outbreak is determined though compiled information of pervious years of flu outbreaks (Conyers, para 3). Another important use of computers in the medical field is patient monitoring. There are many machines used when a patient is on the hospital. These computers are meant to detect changes in blood …show more content…

Now, over seventy-five years later, computers are still being used by the military. The military uses satellites and computer generated images to keep tabs on enemy targets and vehicles. Today, all missiles are equipped with a computer chip and are remotely guided to its intended target. Almost all military vehicles are equipped with a computer for tracking and field information purposes. Tanks rely on computers for targeting and view of the surroundings (Miller, para 2). Computer simulators are used to train soldiers in possible scenarios to test how they would react, as well as to teach them what to do in that situation. Computer based cognitive training, or CBCT is used on soldiers who have experienced traumatic brain injury. By using CBCT, soldiers could increase the functionality of their brain. These programs are very helpful to soldiers after coming back from war with a brain injury. They allow rehabilitation out of a clinical environment and also help soldiers transition back into society (Sullivan, pg.
