Football should be banned in the United States because it can lead to a concussion, can cause brain damage, and can even kill you. When anyone plays football whether it’s professional, college, or high school you can get a concussion. A concussion is also known as traumatic brain injury(TBI), a concussion is caused by the violent movement or jarring the head or neck. Most cases of brain injury are concussions. People who suffer from concussions generally fully recover fast. However, in some cases, symptoms can last for short periods or long periods either days or weeks. The common symptoms of a concussion are the imbalance, confusion, headache, memory loss, loss of consciousness, vision change, hearing change, mood change, fatigue, and malaise. For about 9 to 10 people with concussions, symptoms disappear within 7 to 10 days. The most common causes of concussions in sports is football, rugby, hockey, and basketball.
In the true story based movie and the documentary, the dangers of head injuries in football are laid out for the viewer. Dr. Bennet Omalu discovered the brain injury chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE; however, the NFL was in denial about the effects football had on the brain and had on causing CTE. I believe that the NFL’s denial to the accusations were detrimental to many football players and that serious consideration should be taken into the way football is played overall.
The project that I decided to research was concussions in sports, focusing on the National Football League. Though the NFL is famously known for being hammered with controversy surrounding concussions, they are trying to improve the health and safety measures to prevent them from happening, and to protect players. These measures are usually tagged with a term called “Concussion protocol”. This term has been thrown around for years by announcers, coaches, players, and probably the most by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The question I had was, was the concussion protocol actually being effective and reducing the amount of concussions in the NFL?
In the article “Concussion program for high school athletes works, Michigan group says” by the Associated Press, states information relating a concussion prevention program. By using baseline testing, the program helps analyze the player’s memory, response time, and attention to diagnose concussions. A large number of head injuries were reported by Michigan schools in both boys and girls sports. The largest number of head injuries was within football. Schools who participated in the program noticed an increase in players who were pulled from their sport because of possible head injuries. The downside to the organization’s program is districts that cannot pay for this will have to get word out to the public in order to receive support. Jack
The price tag for NFL is a couple hundred million dollars(Zimmerman). Over 40% of NFL that is not playing anymore have characteristics of having a severe injury to the brain. The NFL found that it was 271 concussions in 2015 (Burdick). Eighteen people have died while playing football in 1905 but there was a gathering that made changes to guaranteed players safety. This is why people need to have the proper gear. "By the time they get to high school, kids have a 5% chance of sustaining a concussion for each season they play" (Zimmerman). If they choose to keep playing football then they will eventually end up with a brain concussion or brain damage. Over the years 65-80% of head injuries go unnoticed ("Stopping the..."58). Football player ignore the fact that it is just a headache. Hospitals took 150,000 in 2001 to 250,000 in 2009 dramatically increased because of concussions ("Injuries in..."). People participating in sports any sports besides football has about 50% of all concussions; players that do not participate in football also have a risk. However, people could fall or get hit you still can get concussion. People who have concussion or had more than one concussion
It’s rare to see the NFL under fire, but when it come to concussions, that’s a different story. The NFL claims progress is being made. On the first day of the start of the NFL season, linebacker Stewart Bradley of the Philadelphia Eagles tackled a player head first; his legs began to buckle and he collapsed. Minutes later, he was subbed back into the game. The NFL calls that progress? Concussions are a serious problem in football, for future athletes, and we need to solve it now.
Sports fans still believes that NFL is still hiding many facts about concussion amongst players. With fans’ urges to find the truth, many media sources interview ex-football players, doctors, and concussion victims to spread the truth about the NFL and actual effects. With testimonies from the concussion victims, awareness of concussion through the media helps facilitate the change in the NFL with regards to concussion protocols. According to John Shockey from DePaul University, he writes, “The increase in media framing of the NFL concussion crisis has made the issue important to the public and made them sympathize with the athletes and their families” (“Media Framing of the NFL Concussion Crisis Is Changing the Culture of the NFL”). Traumatic brain injuries sustained in the National Football League has risen steadily since the first game was played. The public, as well as players, have been inadequately informed of the severity of concussions resulting from severe head trauma. Players have been sent back into play with life threatening injuries that may be invisible immediately but detrimental when observed long term. The National Football League has covered the concussion issue due to the lack of publicly the sport receives when role players are out with a concussion or another injury. In todays’ sports society there are a lot of issues that tend to come up and become very popular. A huge one that caught my eye that has become a great issue in today’s society is concussions within the National Football League. Concussion are a major problems in most American sports. Many people know about concussions and what they are. The problem is how as a country do we stop people from getting concussion. Many people are rushed to the emergency room every year for concussion. Football players were second on the list for visit to the emergency room however, cyclist were number one in emergency visit with head injuries. The problem is that these helmets that football and cyclist use doesn't really protect the brain from collison. The brain requires more protecting than padding in a helmet. Many people are just ditching the helmet because of it not protecting their heads as well as it can also be a danger to somebody. Ian Walker of the University of Bath conducted an experiment in which he rode a bike 320 kilometer. He had a video camera following him the whole trip. He wanted to see how much clearance he would get if he wore a helmet as well sometimes wear a long wig to make drivers think he was a women.

In science class we have been learning about concussions for several weeks now and throughout the many weeks of hard work, I realized how life threatening concussions are.
