Why a push to remove Confederate monuments create violence, protests, and controversy. Removing monuments can be difficult because people will agree or disagree, because to some people its showing appreciation, and to other its showing lack of respect. A white supremacist drove his car into the counter- protesters killing one and injuring 19 others. Despite the chaos the city still plans to remove the Lee statue thought opponents have filled a lawsuit to stop the removal. New Orleans, Louisiana, that recently took down Confederate monuments. New Orleans removed four such statues, including one of lee. People are fighting over the legacy of of the civil war 150 years later. Confederate symbols represent slavery- the main cause of the
In Atlanta Ga, Charlottesville Nc, and in every other formerly Confederate State in the U.S. there has been controversial debates on whether or not the current standing Confederate statues should be removed from public areas. Many people claim that a modern society should not honor the racist soldiers who fought for slavery. Others believe that preserving historical accuracy is essential to learning from the mistakes of the past. The opinions of thousands of citizens clash with one another over the debate between offense and information. I believe that it is most beneficial for the majority of people if the current Confederate monuments remain where they are.
As we know the confederate flag is the most debated topic as, in should we take it down or keep it up to represent the horrible past by it has behind it. The war the blood and the sweat the history of this flag is so bad and wrong and should be taken down why would anyone love a flag like this and know the true meaning behind it. The flag is actually the Battle Flag of Virginia. It was placed to represent white supremacy it was only used as the official flag for two years.
In Mitch Landrieu’s speech, he uses allusions to establish pathos within the citizens of New Orleans. Mitch Landrieu uses the Constitution and Pledge of Allegiance to compel his audience to feel connected. Mitch Landrieu claims that the Confederate monuments represent white supremacy. We have to “reaffirm our commitment to a future” where each person is guaranteed “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” The statues represent a level of control over one another.
In Mayor Landrieu’s view (2017), “As a community, we must recognize the significance of removing New Orleans’ Confederate monuments. It is our acknowledgment that now is the time to take stock of, and then move past, a painful part of our history. Anything less would render generations of courageous struggle and soul-searching a truly lost cause. (pg. 11)” In other words, Mayor Landrieu believes that the monuments should come down and that we need to move past that pain and stand together as one.
Conflicts over confederate Civil War monuments in DFW and across the country boil down to an ideological difference between those who wish to commemorate those that lost their lives in the war and those who wish to leave the racially divisive nature of the Civil War in the past. However, these people fail to realize that both sides have their merits, and neither is without flaws. Rebecca Solnit’s article, The Monuments War, frames my thoughts about the conflict over the Civil War by suggesting that perhaps neither extreme of the argument is entirely correct. Solnit proposes that it is not proper to cleanse our country of its shameful history or to live with constant reminders of the segregation of the past, but that a compromise might be found
The flag has been used in many occasions for the wrong reasons, and it affects how people think of the flag. Although it seems to be a racist symbol, it is a symbol of southern heritage, ancestry, and it hold the memory of all of the fallen Confederate soldiers. Confederate monuments mark history, it would illogical to remove them. It would be taking away a valuable part of our community. Over all, the flag is a symbol of heritage not
Recently, our country has been under scrutiny for racial discrimination. From police brutality to shootings at a church, America’s racial problems that were swept under the rug for so long have come back out into the light. After the raciallymotivated shooting of nine people in South Carolina, many petitions were made regarding the removal of Confederate flags and monuments, including the removal of the historic carving on the side of Stone Mountain, but I believe this would be a terrible mistake. The largest high relief sculpture in the world, the Confederate Memorial Carving, depicts three Confederate heroes of the Civil War, President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson.
Should Confederate monuments be torn down in the United States? Some people believe that they should not be torn down because of the slippery slope argument, meaning that lots of leaders had wrongs too, and we would have to tear theirs down if we tear down the Confederate ones. Others believe that they should be torn down because of two reasons. The first reason is that the previously discussed leaders’ rights outweigh their wrongs. The second reason is that the Confederate monuments honor a racist ideology.
A lot of people may not advocate the removal of the confederate monuments, but the problem is, they aren't opposed to it either. To people, the confederate soldier statues and monuments represent people protecting slavery. But confederate soldier statues and monuments represent individuals, soldiers fighting for
Civil War Monuments The Confederate monuments from the Civil War in many cities, colleges, and universities are being asked to be taken down. The monuments are causing problems between the U.S. citizens. Many people are protesting and saying that the monuments are a symbol of racism, and symbolism of traitors to the U.S., and are used to show white supremacy. These monuments should be taken down from the public but they should not be destroyed.
Pictures of the accused killer flooded television, social networks and newspapers. The displaying of the killer holding the confederate flag was displayed because of the killer’s hate for the black race. Nine people were killed in the shooting spree. The incident in my opinion was a demonic act because the killer sat and open fire while the congregation prayed. Sadly, only because of nine people dying because of racism, the flag was removed for several southern states.
Some say it should not have been built and lots go and vandalize the monument every year. There have been many occasions where the monument has had paint thrown on
Should Cities Be Allowed To Take Down Confederate Statues? What do you think about Confederate Statues? Should cities and governments be allowed to take these statues down? The city of New Orleans had this problem.
In the news today, a continual debate can be found about the significance of Confederate monuments and if they should remain or be removed. Confederate monuments that have been erected throughout the U.S. should be kept because of the preservation of America’s history. For instance, in the article, The Unbearable Lightness of Confederate-Statue Removal, the author lists how slaveholder monuments aren’t the only statues being vandalized, but the Lincoln Memorial and Mount Rushmore are other symbols of U.S. history that some believe need to “blow up” (Murdock). Every historical symbol can have both people who appreciate it and who oppose it. That doesn’t mean that we should tear down all symbols, but
Should monuments be removed? For many years people have been arguing whether certain controversial monuments, such as statues, should be destroyed or removed. A common type of monuments in this situation are the Confederacy monuments. These are various statues across the US which honor Confederate leaders or “heroes”. Many see these offensive since those people basically oppressed African Americans for years and were fighting to keep doing so.
