Conflict In The Scarlet Ibis

Is Brother to blame for Doodle’s death? There are different perspectives on the situation. Brother pushed Doodle to much without respect, and left him alone outside with a storm. I think Brother is to blame for Doodle’s death.

This angered Brother, causing him to push Doodle harder. Until one day he pushed Doodle too far. A storm had abruptly arrived, as the two brothers were in Old Woman Swamp. Brother began to run, and Doodle called after him that he couldn’t keep up. Brother told him to keep going, but when Brother turned back Doodle was no longer in view.

The Choice to be Made In the story “On the Sidewalk Bleeding” by Evan Hunter, sixteen year old Andy, a gang member who was stabbed wanted someone to help him, but because he was labeled as a gang member of the Royals no one was willing to help. So, Andy then realized that he wanted to be recognized as himself instead of as a Royal. Then, Andy struggles to take off his jacket that labels him as a gang member so he can die as himself instead of as a Royal. In this story, the author writes about how Andy lost his life to a gang rumble to show the importance of choosing who you want to be recognized as.

One symbol in “The Scarlet Ibis” is the casket built for Doodle as a baby. According to the text, “‘And before I’ll help you down from the loft, you’re going to have to touch it.’ ‘I won’t touch it,’ he said sullenly.” (paragraph 10, The Scarlet Ibis) it seems as if Brother knows what is going to happen in the near future because he denied Doodle of coming back down until he touched the coffin. There is a reason Doodle was so reluctant to reach out and touch the casket that was built for him as a baby.

My image is, “a feather dropping away.” This image occurs when the family finds the Scarlet Ibis in a tree in their yard. They see a feather fall right before the Ibis fall down to its death. For my drawing I drew a feather dropping from a bird equals Brother running from Doodle. I interpreted this image as negative because a feather dropping shows that the bird is weak and is going to die.

“The Scarlet Ibis” and Simon Birch have a common story line. Both stories are about a boy who had a physical disability and how society looked at them. “The Scarlet Ibis” is a story that takes place in The South; Simon Birch is a movie that takes place in Maine.
