Abstract: Conical picks are the essential cutting tools used especially on mining excavators., and tThe cutting performance and the wear of pick affect the efficiency and the cost of rock/mineral excavation directly. In this research, in order to better understand the mechanism of rock fragmentation by conical pick and the wear mechanism of a pick, a numerical model of rock fragmentation by conical pick is established with the aim of revealing the rock fragmentation mechanism and pick wear mechanism, and explaining the reasons for crushed zone and crack formation under the cutting load, which include the fracture processes of the rock specimen and the mechanism of crushed zone formation, crack initiation and propagation. Introduction
Conical pick is widely used in rock cutting and is one of the key part for mining machine [1, 2]. The conical pick shown in Fig. 1, which is installed on pick-holder and welded on helical vane, plays a vital role on rock fragmentation when the mechanical excavators work. Thus, researches on the rock fragmentation mechanism and the wear of the conical pick are particularly important.

Many scholars have performed a large amount of theoretical research and adopted various numerical simulation methods to study the rock fragmentation mechanism of by a conical pick. The maximum tensile stress theory described by Evans and Pomeroy [3, 4] has been widely used with coal winning machines, continuous miners, roadheaders, and other mining machinery. By analyzing full-size rock-cut test data, Goktan [5] modified Evans’ cutting theory, and pointed out the strong correlation between cutting peak force and average cutting force.
