Psychology behind Connecticut school shooting The Sandy Hook shooting in Connecticut is one of the most devastating mass shootings that has occurred in the US. Adam Lanza is the man who massacred 20 children and 6 adults after committing matricide following up with his suicide, with a semi-automatic rifle. Police have announced that Adam had been diagnosed with Asperger 's a form of autism, as well as prior issues with being bullied during elementary schooling. Parents have been left devastated and the rest baffled at Adam 's spontaneous behavior. If I were a psychologist I would first looks at Adam 's childhood, which fortunately the police report points out, which points to me that a more behavioral and cognitive
In the book Columbine by Dave Cullen, Dylan and Eric are the two teenage boys who was in control of the high school shooting. We can only assume why they did it. The boys both had their own problems and just seemed to click when they were together. Eric was a psychopath and Dylan would listen to him.
On December fourteenth of 2012, Adam Lanza walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut and shot twenty-six kids and teachers using a .223 Caliber Bushmaster Model XM15 assault rifle. By definition, a mass shooting has to consist of at least four victims, therefore, mass shootings occur every day while only the major incidents make national news. This particular shooting affected many and will forever have in imprint on gun laws, the safety of schools, and the part mental health plays. The multipath model can be applied to Adam explaining what might have led to the massacre. Adam was diagnosed with a mild form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.
On July 20, 2012, a terrible tragedy had taking place in aurora Colorado inside the century movie theater. This tragedy happened during the midnight screening of the film the dark knight rises which is based off the excerpts of the marvel character batman. A person walked into the theater, exploded tear gas grenades, and used guns to shoot into the audience killing twelve people and injuring 70 others. The person that did this horrible act was a man by the name of James Eagan Holmes, and he was arrested right outside of the century movie theater. Colorado has experienced this type of act before when going through the columbine high school shooting in 1999 but this was the deadliest act of violence since then.
“In fewer than 11 minutes, twenty first-grade pupils and six adults had lost their lives” (Sanchez 1). On December 14, 2012 the lives of families across the nation changed forever. Adam Lanza, a twenty year old man suffering with multiple mental illnesses, went on a shooting rampage at the Sandy Hook Elementary School after murdering his mother just minutes before. He had no motive for his unbelievable actions, but took the lives of children who had so many more years to live and memories to make. The Sandy Hook shooting was the second most deadly shooting in the United States, as it scarred innocent people, and still has families across the nation wondering why this horrific event happened.

Lanza was 20 years old and had Asperger’s. Asperger’s, a form of autism, is not believed to have played a major role in what caused Lanza to do the shooting a Sandy Hook. Lauren Elder, a clinical psychologist with Autism Speaks says, “Often, their violent acts are self-injurious and spontaneous, the result of frustrated attempts to communicate and not getting their pain or desires heard or addressed.” (Time). Lauren Elder states that in most cases Asperger’s causes one to hurt themselves.

School Shootings: How We All Miss the Point... The aftermath of a school shooting is tragic, depressing, and causes hatred for the lives lost and the person who took them. Everyone, especially the media, tries to interpret why the shooter killed their victims, or why they felt the need to end others’ lives and their own. How We All Miss the Point on School Shootings, by Mark Manson, explains what and why these mass shootings happen. He starts by using examples of shootings and the murderer’s past.
Adam Peter Lanza was born on April 22, 1992 in Exeter, New Hampshire as the second child of parents Peter and Nancy Lanza. As a toddler, Adam experienced mental impediments which hindered his development. A report detailing Adam’s life before his crimes states that, “From an early age, Lanza experienced significant developmental challenges, particularly with language, communication and sensory integration...” (Ziv Newsweek P6). In addition to his troubled early childhood, Adam continued to show signs of unusual behavior.
So with all these kids dying wouldn't you agree that we need better mental health support, so we can prevent all these shootings? I believe that if we had good and strong mental health support services in the USA then tragic events like Columbine H.S. & Sandy Hook would probably never happen. That is why I am supporting for the USA to talk more about how to create more mental health support programs to help prevent gun violence events. Since 2013, 185 school shootings have occurred in the United States of America, according to the article "The Long, Shameful List of School Shootings in America." This averages to about one every week. School shootings have been a problem in the United States since 1853 which is when one of the first documented shootings with a student undertaking the shooting happened. Chris Glavin in his article “History of School Shootings in the United States” exclaims, “[On] November 2, 1853 [in] Louisville, Kentucky, a student, Matthew Ward, bought a self-cocking pistol in the morning, went to school and killed Schoolmaster Mr. Butler for excessively punishing his brother the day before.” School shootings can leave parents awestricken by how safe their
(NY Daily News) B. (Subpoint 2) Traumatic experiences like physical and sexual abuse will impact young individuals negatively and eventually cause them to lash out with gun violence. 1. (Sub-subpoint 1) Traumatized shooters come from dysfunctional families, in contrast with shooters that are psychopathic. The shooters have all faced some sort of physical/sexual abuse and have had at least one parent with a criminal record.
Social Control theory can be used as a reliable and valid psychosocial explanation of school violence, specifically in explaining the actions of the Columbine school shooters. Kempf-Leonard and Morris described control theory in their journal in a way that provides an explanation for how behavior conforms to that which is generally expected in society. Some control theories emphasize the developmental processes during childhood by which internal constraints develop. Social control theories, however, focus primarily on external factors and the processes by which they become effective. Deviance and crime occur because of inadequate constraints.
Since the Columbine High School shooting, school shootings have become a common occurrence. People have become so accustomed to seeing them on the news, so we hardly bat an eye at them anymore. For every instance of a school shooting we see, there are hundreds of lawmakers making public that their thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Frankly, those thoughts and prayers are simply not enough anymore. The Parkland shooting is one of many school shootings, that have brought light to the subject of gun violence in schools, and it is clear, if it hasn’t been one already, that gun regulation needs to change.
