Plagiarism is something done so often in schools, as well as outside of schools in today's world. It is so easy to do with the internet now, and can be done in several different forms. However, when you do take someone else's work and use it as your own, there will be consequences. These consequences can be detrimental to the person in several different ways, as well as for several different reasons. Students are especially known for plagiarizing; their consequences may not be as serious as in other cases, but it does still harm them. Using plagiarism can harm students in a way to the point where the teacher does not trust them, as well as it can permanently put a dent in your track record. Having a good relationship requires trust; when that trust is broken, it causes several more issues in the future. Teachers are there to help you and want you to succeed, but when you break their trust it makes it extremely hard to have a good relationship with them. If you desire to be a good student and work hard, you can gain some of that trust back. However there will always be a missing piece due to the fact that you cheated. Relationships with your peers can also be affected. If they did the work themselves and did it to the best of their abilities, it shows them that you are just lazy. Your peers do not like it when they do all the work and find out that you just took the easy way out. It is important to have good relationships, and is it really worth it to jeopardize that just so you can do less work. You not only break the trust and relationship with your teachers and peers, but you are also only hurting yourself. If you just do the work without an outside source, you don’t have to risk you grade in a class. You also don’t have to have a fear of the consequences that come along with using plagiarism or other forms of cheating. It is so hard not to just go to internet and look up a topic nowadays; it seems so much simpler. But when you feel like you are coming up with your own material, and it really came from another person, it is not fair to the person who wrote the material in the first place. Nor to your peers who did all the work in the first place. Taking the initiative to do the work yourself and not copy off of some other place or person can be so rewarding. In her article “Unconscious Plagiarism,” Rachel Tool describes how she experienced been plagiarized by unmeant from her friends and her students. Also she might use other people’s ideas by accident. She told her students that famous writers sometimes steal other famous writer’s ideas or writing structures because they want to build their tension and use fluid transitions. Long time ago, lots of students use rote memorization when they learning how to write, and students just re-transcribe what they learned from other people. When the writer heard that students always use her ideals to play jokes and communicate after class, she is kind of happy cause she thought this is likely a form of flattery.
In any school you have attended, plagiarism is a situation that a writer should not put themselves in under any circumstances. When reading the essay “Something Borrowed,” Malcolm Gladwell gave insight into the flaws of plagiarism that writers may not have thought about before. The first being that plagiarism is never acceptable (927). The second issue with plagiarism is recognizing the differences that can or cannot “inhibit creativity” (931). Being inspired by another person's work can help and guide you to build your own ideas, but simply taking their work and claiming it as yours is not permitted.

In practice, this means consulting sites like Stack Overflow and Reddit, in order to solve the problems you are unable to. Within a workplace context, plagiarism isn’t a vice, but a skill. It takes aptitude and understanding in order to look at how someone solved a problem, and integrate it into your own code.
Plagiarism is defined as the act of representing the work of someone else as your own (AERA, 2011; APA, 2010; APA, 2012; Cozby & Bates, 2012; Creswell, 2014). According to Fisher & Partin (2014), there are two forms of plagiarism, which are deliberate and accidental. Deliberate plagiarism is the intentional attempt to pass off the work of someone else as your own, and accidental plagiarism is unknowingly using the work of someone else without proper citation and referencing (Fisher & Partin, 2014). Commonly, plagiarism is thought of as submitting someone else’s work for an essay or school report and can include submitting the entire artifact as your own, or using a small portion of the work, such as paragraph or sentence without properly citing the original author (Cozby & Bates, 2012). Submitting someone else’s work in place of completing the work themselves is an ethical dilemma most students understand; however, oftentimes, students do not understand that it is equally important to cite the ideas of others even when expressed in their own words.
As I engage this unit’s Read and Attend assignments, I find that my understanding of plagiarism is not as fully developed as I had previously thought. Our Unit 3 Attend assignment shares that “in a general sense plagiarism may be caused by carelessness” and these circumstances frequently precipitate the lack of care required while writing (Bethel University, 2014, p. 11). The academic integrity tutorial provided additional information which I found valuable as well. Common themes within each unit assignment provide strands of continuity, while assisting with a more comprehensive understanding. It is my opinion, the type of plagiarism that is hardest for me to avoid is “plagiaphrasing”, also known as “lazy paraphrasing” (Bethel University, 2014, p. 12).
“Cheating is an improper action that is never allowed in school”, might be a phrase you hear your teacher say right before you take a final exam. Sometimes you might be irritated when your teacher catches a student cheating during an assignment and starts yelling at him for a good 20 minutes. Despite that, maybe you are curious in the reason why that student would cheat. Many students all around America cheat while taking tests for a variety of different reasons. I remember some classmates, cheating back in high school. Throughout my entire educational career, I have experienced meeting a lot of cheaters. Plagiarism is considered a form of cheating. The punishment has changed from a zero grade to expulsion. A lot of students who cheat, are only fooling themselves.
Plagiarizing is disrespectful towards teachers because it is showing them that you are lazy and do not care about their assignments. Most times people plagiarize because they are too lazy to put what they read into their own words, or people are too lazy to read the material so they just copy and paste it. If you are too lazy to read the material you will not be able to fully understand the concepts and word them yourself. Which lead to plagiarism. The ability to achieve and to recognize that success can come from being industrious should be the deterring factor for a student who considers committing the act of plagiarism. What is plagiarism one might ask? Voelker, Love & Pentina (2012) define plagiarism as, “putting forward another’s work as your own” (p. 37).
