What are the main reasons for conserving biodiversity?
Humans think of themselves as kings of the Earth. With 7 billion people on Earth colonizing almost every corner of the planet, it is quite understandable why one might think that way. However, the Earth is more than just for humans. The Earth is full of diverse life, housing approximately 9 million types of animals, plants, fungi, and protists (Cardinale et al, 2012). This diversity is called biodiversity, stemming from the words biological diversity. Biodiversity can be classified into three elements: genetic (diversity at the level of the genetic code), species (differences within and between species and populations of species), and ecosystem (different habitat communities and ecological processes). DeLong (1996) describes the meaning of biodiversity extensively as follows:

The importance of biodiversity is not simply environmental or economical alone, and cannot be measured by economic costs. While it has no price, it is priceless. Whether direct or indirectly, biodiversity benefits mankind by providing clean water, recreation, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and more. Biodiversity proves to be valuable even though it cannot be measured with empirical values. It provides not only direct use values (consumption), but also indirect use (ecosystem services), option values (ecosystem resilience), and existence values (knowledge that it exists). Values of the Florida Everglades The Florida Everglades is a national park where animals live in harmony because of this thing called biodiversity. Biodiversity is a word commonly used to "describe the relative number of different species in an ecosystem. " The everglades depend on its ecosystems, that’s how everything stays running and alive. Without the everglades, there wouldn't be as many species, the everglades houses these species and without it, many of them would be extinct or endangered. Darwin’s theory of evolution is said to be divided into two parts, common decent and natural selection (Bouzat, 2014). By building all of these new additions we are killing hundred of different species in the process. Humans are cutting down forests, and destroying animal’s habitats. De-Extinction, a interesting topic that most people don’t have an opinion on. De-extinction is a process which uses the DNA of extinct animals and use a surrogate mother and father to bring back an extinct animal. Scientists are working on ways to bring back animals such as wooly mammoths and maybe even dinosaurs. This is a very hopeful topic from different points of view, and a very scary topic from others. Also, some scientists think it’s impossible for certain animals and not for others.
