I grew up in San Bernardino California which has consistently ranked as one of American’s murder capitals due to high rates of gang violence and drugs. For my parents, their children attending college was never on their radar. I never took the SATs and I did not consider college until my late 20’s.

By 30 I made it to law school. During law school orientation the President of the school made the standard speech “look to your left and to your right because 2/3 of you will not make it to graduation.” When I looked to my left and to my right I realized that out of the hundreds of students I was one of a handful of minorities in the room and one of two students of African American descent.
