ORGANIZATIONAL SET-UP OF CONSUMER FORAS:
Consumer protection laws in India enable an insurance consumer to dispute a case against an insurance provider if there has been a deficiency on their part. Deficiency in insurance services arises when there is a default or negligence on the provider’s part to settle a claim. An unreasonable delay in making the payment on a claim also amounts to deficiency of services.

Government of India has framed a set of laws and legislations to protect the interests of consumers and the most important act framed by Govt, is Consumer Protection Act, 1986. In fact, insurers tend to find ways to reduce the claim amount or avoid making a settlement altogether but consumer protection laws seek to protect consumers from such deficiencies in insurance services. The Consumer Protection Act, 1986, is a central government act applicable in all states of India, to provide for the protection of the interests of consumers (including investors). If there is any deficiency in services by any insurance service provider, the insured can approach consumer courts/ forums for speedy resolving of matters. Besides, a phenomenal increase in reporting of grievances, a significant improvement was seen in redressal, too. After IGMS was put in place, ‘complaints’ were given a clear definition by the regulator. These largely include issues related to insurers’ promise of delivery. With IGMS, every complaint is getting registered and addressed, leading to a massive jump in the indicated number. Online filing of complaints is a great initiative by these respective regulators and watchdogs but steps should be taken to publicize it and make websites more robust and user friendly.
