Understanding consumer buying behaviour is a fundamental concept in the marketing of goods and services. As it is constantly evolving, creating challenges for practitioners in the field on international marketing and consumer behaviour (Josiannen and Harzing 2008), it is imperative for owners, manufactures, as well as service providers to understand why consumers select one product over another. Similarly, it provides them with a competitive advantage over its competitors in several areas (Kotler and Keller 2011). The decision-making process begins in the mind of the consumers. As such, what consumers buy, when, where, why and how much depends on a number of factors such as perception, culture, social interaction, personal and psychological …show more content…
The government even has an impact on consumer food and family consumption decision. 2.2 Multidisciplinary Approach to consumer behaviour for food. The understanding of consumer behaviour for food should be done by integrating various disciplines inclusive of economic, behaviourist, descriptive (Meulenberg 1974), and cognitive perspective. Human beings are very intricate and complex beings and are influenced by internal and external elements, as such having a multidisciplinary approach are important (Wisdom Jobs 2016). This paper will review three of these approaches. 2.2.1 Economic Perspective From an economic stand point, consumer’s behaviour is explained through the theory of choice (Snyder 2012). This theory describes the consumer’s preferences (Consumer Preference Theory) which determine how individuals feel about things and their reaction to it. Casher-Cardo (2013) defined consumer preferences as the subjective (individual) tastes, as measured by utility, of various bundles of goods. These bundles of goods are ranked given the level of utility the consumer receives (Casher-Cardo 2012). Preferences are separate and apart from income and prices as such the ability to buy goods is not determined by consumer’s likes or dislikes. One can have a preference for local chicken over …show more content…
there is a perception that individuals are information processors, recognizing the effect of environmental and social experiences in the processing of information” (Dudovskiy 2016). The external structures mainly provide information to consumers. The information is divided into two: reinforcing stimulus cues and discriminatiive stimulus cues. The discriminative stimulus cues show up in reinforcement situations in which they declare the reinforcement opportunity, however, it is not required for reinforcement to occur. The cognitive approach helps to understand the mental processes and foundations which intercede between the stimulus and responses (Dudovskiy 2016). Modern Cognitive approach pinpointed a range of integral factors to the intrapersonal processes. These are perception, memory, learning, emotion, thinking and motivation (Bray
According to Weber & Johnson (2009), higher cognition levels are present when an individual has an initial perception of a situation or task. The
Task 5 According to the utility theory, consumers would change their spending pattern if the satisfaction they gain from the products or the price of products alter. For instance, initially a consumer may be allocating her spending between two products, X and Y such as: Marginal utility of X = Marginal utility of Y Price of X Price of Y 20 = 35
We come across varieties of food everyday, but we know very little about where it comes from and their history. Reading Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma opened my eyes to all that goes into producing what I eat. Pollan explores three different modern food chains in his book: the industrial, the organic, and the hunter-gatherer.
In the book The Omnivores Dilemma, by Michael Pollan he brings us on his journey with him through analyzing the model of “four meals” and how our thinking habits have changed the way we choose to eat and go about eating throughout the years and the role our society and the different expectations put on individuals has effected their thoughts and relationship to food. Each section and chapter of the book is broken up into different fads, opinions and findings that Pollan has found along his journey. Throughout the book his pre determined notions and thoughts around our society with food is challenged but also is backed up by different healthful and food activists like himself and how like minded people can differer in opinions and thoughts on how our society has changed involving
In The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Pollan encourages us to change the way we eat but he never instructs us on what consumers should be eating. He educates us on what we are eating and informs us of all the events that go on behind closed doors. By building and building on our knowledge, he can reel us in instead of driving us away with offensive remarks. He never attacks the fact that most of us eat without thinking about it. In doing this, he can calmly approach his audience with the facts.
Nowadays in America, we are encountering problems with our food system. The way it’s being processed is affecting everyone. From youngest to oldest, farmers to lawyers and smallest to biggest animal. Consumers are made to believe that they are buying and eating healthy foods , but the labels that led them to believe that are not completely honest. The essay “Escape from the Western Diet” written by Michael Pollan is an explanation of the theories of the western diet.
There are more choices today than ever before when buying food. Modern technology has allowed for incredible advancements in food preparation and delivery. In the article Springing Forward by Barbara Kingsolver, she states how she is displeased with the way produce is handled at supermarkets. Kingsolver is a passionate gardener so this issue strikes close to her. In her article, Kingsolver is upset that companies breed a limited variety of vegetables for their clients.
The sociological imagination on food In this assignment I am going to talk about the sociological imagination on food and the aspects it brings with it. Before starting that large process I firstly will explain what the social imagination is and what the key points of the imagination are in able to fully understand the topic; food and its history, biography, and the relation it has in society. This is my first assignment for the module understanding contemporary society so please bear with me as I will do my best to explain it in a logic manner so everybody can understand it.
Intrapersonal: an individual’s understanding of one’s self such as controlling their thoughts which can be further specified into strengths and weaknesses. Advantages/strengths of Howard Gardner’s theory: 1. Helps to explain that an individual has a variety of different understandings in different types of multiple intelligence. 2. The theory was based upon educational evidence and case studies.
The cognitive level of analysis aims to study how the inner processes of the mind processes information gained, and how they are interpreted and applied into the real world. Within this level of analysis, it was found that the cognitive and biological factors of our mind influence how we feel, or in other words, our emotions. Emotion can be defined as the body’s response to any specific situation. As all human beings can express how they feel through facial expressions, this suggests that emotions are biological rather than cognitive. However, emotions can be dependent on both the cognitive and biological factors of our body.
American consumers have become accustomed to this notion of uniformity, without realizing that what is purchased now is a “notion of a tomato, picked green, and ripened with ethylene gas,” as Robert Kenner expresses in the documentary, Food Inc. There is a common denial forged between what is known and what one chooses not to know about what is being consumed. In order to make an informed decision society must first be given the option by being provided with the right

Introduction At the start of this course, I had no idea what to expect. This is due to the fact that marketing is a field that offers a combination of so many different disciplines such as art, psychology, and statistics. I encounter marketing on a daily basis but have strangely enough not reflected too much about it. Nevertheless, it is a very interesting subject, which deals with promoting and selling services and products.
Consumers make purchase decisions when buying small items (such as a cup of coffee) and buying larger items such as houses. Consumers begin to search for products or services that meet their needs after recognizing their needs or needs. They evaluate their choice and pay attention to everything from pricing to brand reputation before the mark is purchased. Four consumer buying behaviour overview product purchase
