The following essay will be considering the question “To what extent are current consumption habits sustainable?”. Firstly I would like to define a number of terms to be able to fully understand the idea of consumption habits, such as consumption, habits, sustainability, planned and perceived obsolescence, rate, mass media, ethical, GMO, waste, and finite. Sustainability is the ability to be able to maintain or keep at a constant or certain rate. Consumption is taking in something or a resource. Habit is a tendency of a usual practice, mass media is the media, which is the large means of communication. Ethical means that a certain action is morally correct. Rate is the level at which something is moving along or going. Planned and perceived …show more content…
One way is the reduced use of insecticides by 230 kg due to the use of insect-resistant crops, which before killed many crops and other nearby organisms. They also reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which are gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect by absorbing and emitting infrared radiation, quite bad as it is a factor of global warming. However, there are ways that our current consumption habits are unsustainable, as, for the GMO industry, the mass media does not know all the effects and facts about GMO foods. Though most of us have eaten GMO’s, we have not been informed about what has been modified or switched or ingredients. An example of this is the use of antibiotics in GMO food. They make antibiotics for humans less effective because GMOs already have them while you eat. So now the antibiotics we take won’t be as effective because there are already in their food for the crop to be resistant to disease. Even though GMO’s do help protect the environment, they can also cause a loss of biodiversity. The other problem is that loss of biodiversity, as, during gene transfer, some genes can escape into the wild. An example is the weed crops. If those genes go into the crops, this can make them impossible to kill, as they are known now “super-weeds”. GMO’s are also …show more content…
To try and improve the problem of consumerism and sustainability we have to promote waste management as advertisers take 40% of the global digital market, meaning more than 1.28 billion people can witness the advertisements and raise awareness, as we need it know more than ever. The reason we need this in order for our consumer habits to sustain is that we are starting to produce more waste in the 2010’s. In 2016 household waste volumes per person in England was 412 kg alone, which is an example of overconsumption. Overconsumption is the act of consumption all the way to the excess. So if advertisements can start to demonstrate the effects of consumption on the mass media, and how much we use, it may put things into perspective and reduce
However, GMO's are controversial because chemicals are used to alter the genetic information of a crop. Those chemicals can increase the risk for certain illnesses, such as diabetes and cancer. GMO's are meant to be the perfect organism, however many factors can go wrong with so much genetic modification since its going against nature (Food Policy Institute 2003). The process of how GMO's are created is through the help of gene transfer technology. The desired gene from another organism is placed in the other organisms genome
The consumers have the ability to increase the environmental sustainability. When National Geographic researches about this issue, it got the statistic from many consumers around 18 countries (para.4.5). So it found a few of American consumers able to live sustainably, and they feel not so much guilt. In the contrary, the consumers of Chains and India promote to live sustainably, and they feel more guilt (para.6). However, the people cannot live sustainably without awareness about the sustainability and
It’s a popular topic on the media that GMOs are bad for the human body. Well, little did the they know that ninety percent of corn grown in the US is genetically modified (Margie Kelly), and the body can 't even distinguish between GMOs and non-GMOs! There are people debating that GMOs are unhealthy, bad for the economy and even the environment. These people must be uneducated on this topic. Genetically modified crops improve our society because they allow farmers to yield a larger crop, improve the quality their crop, and lessen the negative environmental impacts of their crops.
Nevertheless, I hold a opposite view, I think GM food is worsening our world rather than improving it. GM food has negative effects on both nature and human while producing and using. Negative Effects on Nature Reduce biodiversity Although through genetic modification, food can contain various kinds of nutrition we need, but in long-term, GM food can threaten the biodiversity of our planet. GM food is
Sometimes farmers use too many resources inefficiently, they may use pesticides or have factories that pollute as they get the produce ready for shipping. Sustainable farming is a concept that has become known due to our need for sustainable solutions. By growing food closer to where people consume, we will decrease transportation miles and provide inner-city jobs that will help combat the problems of food cost or employment. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) are important to help achieve sustainability. Amy Hammon’s essay “A Race to Save the Orange by Alteringits DNA” makes this idea clear.
GMOs increase the use of dangerous chemicals, GMOs are not labeled, and we do not need GMOs to feed everyone. It is time that we stop consuming and producing these harmful crops. Imagine being an organic food, then all of a sudden an evil food scientist injects a needle into you, filled with genes of other organisms. How would you feel? Think about it, why would we trust something that has been around for only 30 years and has not been proven safe when we can trust something that has been around for 1000s of years and has been proven
There will be nomore left on the planet. They all will disappear. This is a extreme conflict that scientist and the world is trying to avoid. The third reason i think Gmos are harmful because it can cause enviromental risks. This could also bother our health too because we eat lots of veggies out of the field.
It is a sad reality that the corporate giant Monsanto is a wolf in sheep 's clothing, causing not only harmful consequences to the environment but to the overall well being of mankind. This is primarily due to the production of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, and the popular herbicide Roundup. Genetically modified organisms are the product of the process of transferring the DNA of one organism to that of an unrelated species. This process of horizontal gene transfer is sometimes mistaken with cross-breeding, which is a completely safe and natural process (Mercola). Moreover, in GM seeds pesticides are often injected into the DNA of the seed so that the pesticides do not have to be sprayed.
Natural Crop farming causes stress on the farmland, which causes the soil to yield less and less crops until the soil becomes unfit for farming(Bennett). Genetically Modified foods can be engineered to lessen this effect greatly along with the ability to be planted in soils that have suffered from soil erosion and drought(Bennett). By modifying a food with the ability to be planted in area that is suffering from drought, that means that food shortages will be less frequent along with less stress being put on other farming lands to make up for a lack of food. Despite popular belief that GM foods are bad for the long term health of people, GM foods are relatively safe.
Genetically modified organisms help in improving crops, increase nutritious value in plants, increases its life, it has better resistance to diseases, drought or insect pests. I also agree to the fact that sometimes research and development are not done properly on Genetically modified organisms. We are not aware about the facts or figures of how much it is impacting humans. Consumption of GMO food is good or bad for human health. It needs some more time to reach humans for consumption.
GMOS Introduction: I believe that GMOS are good for this world and for the people because the gmos can save us from starving when all the food is gone. GMOS are a genetically modified organism is an organism whose genetic materials that have been altered using genetic engineering techniques. GMO foods are okay to eat because some food that have gmos could have some genetic characteristics in them to make the food survive the hot when that food has to be frozen. GMOS are different from foods that don 't have GMOS Body 1: GMOS can save the world because if we had no food because if there was a drought and the plants died. Then we could just plant GMO foods, The drought won’t really do anything to the plant.
Animals that were feed GMOs were, “less able to digest protein and had changes in the gut lining not only influences obesity but can also give rise to a slew of health issues such as colitis, diabetes, digestive disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune disorders, sexual dysfunction, sterility, asthma and autism, among many others.” About 75 percent of processed food contains GMOs, and 80 percent of food eaten in America is processed. The “Centers for Disease Control 's (CDC) weight gain data shows that obesity has spiked dramatically since the early 1990s -- which just happens to be soon after genetically modified crops were introduced into the food supply.” 68 percent of Americans are overweight and 34 percent are obese. This results in $190 billion each year in medical
GMOs is the abbreviation of “Genetically Modified Organisms” and can be defined as living organisms which the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) be altered in a way that occurred non-naturally. GMOs can be created by either genetic engineering or recombinant DNA technology (World Health Organization, 2014). Nowadays, GMOs are mostly produced as food for humans. There are a lot of debates all over the world that related to GMOs. One of the common claims is “The world needs more GMOs.”
Consumerism intrudes with the workings of society by overthrowing the standard judgment wish for an adequate supply of life 's necessities, a steady family and solid associations with a manufactured continuous journey for things and the purchasing power with little respect for the genuine utility of the item purchased. In today’s World World, there is a high level of consumption which has been described as a major threat on sustainability. Even though consumerism has positive effects like motivating people to work harder in order to improve their social status and well being, it has adverse effects on the environment and the social aspect of life. Consumerism, according to the new Oxford English dictionary, means the preocccupation of society with the acquisition of consumer goods. Sustainablity, on the other hand, according to the ‘brudtland report’ was broadly defined as Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
This is because the better trait is produced by engineering genes which results in favoring one organism. Genetically modified organism can interrupt the natural process of the gene flow. A possible issue with the modified crop genes ending up in the soil which can produce new strands that can eventually attack the plant species and producing a new strand. Genes from the GM crops can spread to organic farm crops threating the diversity in agriculture. Due to cross pollination to non-gm plants, new hybrid strains are created.
