In today’s contemporary world leadership behavior is considered the foundation of motivating employees that result in an organization being successful. According to (Mullins 2013 pg 369) leadership can be defined as “a relationship through which one person influences the behaviour or actions of other people”. Leaders should also possess the fortitude to inspire employees to high performance. According to (Robbins and Judge 2011 pg 204) motivation is defined as “the process that account for an individual’s intensity, and persistence of effort towards attaining a goal”. True leaders must possess the ability to motivate their followers in order to make the vision become realty. Therefore, motivation is about stimulating desire and energizing people to be continually interested, committed towards goal attainment and being satisfied with some form of reward. According to (Mullins, 2013 pg 246) defines motivation as “the degree to which an individual wants and chooses to engage in certain specified behaviours”
In researching the topic the author intend to use secondary sources of data from prescribed books, journals and scholar articles relevant to and explaining traditional and contemporary theories in leadership and motivation. If the employee believes in the leader is trustworthy, honest and seeks to share his/her knowledge for the betterment of all followers this will motivate them to work hard towards their new horizon..
