In today’s contemporary world leadership behavior is considered the foundation of motivating employees that result in an organization being successful. According to (Mullins 2013 pg 369) leadership can be defined as “a relationship through which one person influences the behaviour or actions of other people”. Leaders should also possess the fortitude to inspire employees to high performance. Organizations take on the personality of their leaders, and followers must be confident that the leader of the organization can be trusted with the outcome of the journey. The leader must be able to attract followers. New leaders can successfully persuade others to trust them, and will evidence other certain behaviors. They themselves will be skilled at trusting, because trusting and trustworthiness enhance each other.
These are the factors that play a major role in increasing employee motivation on the job. While management was once determined by status and privilege, this is no longer the case. Modern leadership is now an ambition that leaders must earn from the people following them. Leaders must make a daily effort to keep their followers motivated and committed to the leaders they are following. Followers make a daily decision whether to follow their leaders.
Leaders need to be very caring and show a genuine passion to work with others. Being passionate about the employees drives a leader to learn more about their greatest attributes and their greatest weaknesses. By learning these about each employee shows that not only does the leader what himself to succeed, but wants his employees to succeed as well. Furthermore, a leader needs to be sincerely caring on learning about its employees; it is not something that they should or can fabricate. If the employees feel that the leader does not care and they are only pretending to, then the employees will not respect the leader.

Leadership has been defined in a variety of ways, there are multiple authors and theorists who have tried to define and understand leadership, all leading to varying theories and conclusions, but one thing that is universally understood is the importance of effective leadership and how someone with good leadership skills can impact so many people around them. (Kakabadse and Kakabadse, 1999; Yukl, 2002; Northouse,2013) The main components that have been identified to play a role in leadership are relations between leader and subordinates, interaction form between leader and followers, the influence that the leader has, the way in which the leader behaves and finally a leader’s traits. (Yukl, 2002) These elements that make up a leader, are then used as building blocks to identify the way in which each specific leader deals with its followers.
The second theory-based change that I could make is handling conflict with a smile. This is related to the service leadership theory because all leaders deal with conflict (Daft, 2014). I have to learn that conflict is nothing personal, it’s just business. Maybe a smile isn’t always appropriate, but stress isn’t worth it.
I was taught that if you do not have a reason behind your leading and your heart is not in it, People can see that and will be reluctant to follow you. Having a passion and drive for what you are doing will motivate you and the people you are leading. I feel this is so very crucial for a leader. I would not want to follow someone who is not driven to get better and help others. I was able to learn about how she has been able to improve herself and hope to do same.

Different scholars identified various kinds of leadership styles that affect the job performance, satisfaction and learning and development of subordinates. Warrick, D.D (1981) cited that there are no doubt variables other than a leader’s style that affect employee performance and development but leadership style plays a significant role and not to be underestimated. An awareness of leadership styles and their consequences are very important because it may either facilitate or inhabit skill development. The major theories on leadership are the traits, leadership styles and contingency theories.
Leaders are made, not born. The Great Man Theory suggests that people inherit qualities and traits that make them better suited for leadership. “To suggest that leaders do not enter the world with extraordinary endowment is to imply that people enter the world with equal abilities, with equal talents.” (Thomas Carlyle 1840) While it is true that there are certain characteristics that leaders are born with that predispose them to become leaders, the influence of these characteristics are often overexaggerated.

There will be information on the advantages and disadvantages of the leadership theories and information on each including examples. The purpose of this paper is to view various kinds of leadership theories and apply them to a real-life scenario.
