Cookie Disaster: A Short Story

Shivering to the bone, running in the front door of my dad’s house I hear the sound of pots and pans popping on the stove. From the moment I stepped foot in the door I could smell ham and sweet potatoes baking in the oven. Walking in the kitchen I see my step mom mashing potatoes with a beater. As I walk to the stove I see eggs boiling so we could make deviled eggs. I hear a strange noise so I turned and I saw my grandmother in the doorway holding a crispy apple pie she had just made that morning in her hand. Then the timer went off and I pulled out the sizzling ham and soft rolls. The touch of the rolls in my hand brought back old memories of years past. My grandmother then took the pie out of the bag and put it in the oven

Nothing is better than a freshly baked batch of chocolate chip cookies. They’re a delicious enjoyable dessert that everyone knows and loves. It’s hard to go wrong with these. When people view my brown skin they assumed I can speak Spanish fluently. When Hispanic people talk to me, I try to answer back in Spanish. I had the opportunity to spend my service learning hours with an amazing young lady by the name of Paige. Paige is 25 years old and has a twin brother and a younger brother who she recently lost to suicide. It affected her deeply and she now battles depression. Paige was born premature, 3 months before her due date and weighed in at a whopping .??ounces. From the gate Paige had complications and had open heart surgery at ?days old. Growing up Paige has had 17 surgeries on her legs, back and arms. Paige also has Cerebral Palsy.

An eager Freshman takes their first steps into the Commons on Link Day.
