In learning, learners rely on the guidance, assistance and support from their educators that they feel secure from participating in the teaching-learning circumstances and finally come to be independent. ‘The learners’ level of maturity eventually determines the certain leadership state that a learner would be responsible to part-take in’ (Louw & Du toit, 2010). Although, it is a challenge to educators to understand and deal with the differences of learners in approach to their schoolwork. Coetzee & van Niekerk (2015) claim that learners’ personalities and preferences regarding schoolwork vary. Cooperative learning can be defined as a team approach to learning where each member of the group is dependent on the member to accomplish a specific learning task or assignment (UNISA, 2010). The level of responsibility from the individual learners can be assessed by the overall success of the group-work that depend up on each member of the group. Coetzee (2006) believe that this sense of interdependence and teamwork leads to increase in academic achievement for most learners, and also has the added benefit of providing opportunities for learners to improve their socialization skills and become more aware of and sensitive to cultural diversity among learners. Cooperative learning demands for communication, trust leadership and conflict resolution skills.
The educator as a leader should monitor the learner’s behavior, sharing work with other groups and reflecting on the group learning experience. At the end of the day, the responsibility for the group lies with each member for example, if a problem arise, each member exercise an effort toward solving the problem.
