Introduction
Health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. (WHO, 2005, P.1) There is no doubt that all the people need to learn how to facilitate their health. Nevertheless, most of them do not know how to do it well. In this time, nurse play an important roles to help the people meet the optimal health. From the nurse council of Hong Kong point of view, health promotion and health education is one of the scopes of core-competencies required of a RN (General). (NCHK, 2012, P.3) In this essay, I will concentrate on how this core competence can be shown by a variety of nursing roles. Health promotion, health education and nursing role
There are few nursing roles that can demonstrate health promotion and education. It is consisting of client advocate, educator, counselor and health promotor.
Client advocate
A patient advocate is an advocate for clients’ rights. (Olin, 2012) According to the principle of protecting the patient, the nurse should support and provide information and knowledge to let people making decisions so as to promote self-determination. Based on the ability of health promotion and education, client advocate must be able to intervene appropriately to safe guard the interests and well-being of the client. He worries about the relationship with his family and he scares he will suffer from lung cancer. The nurse as a counsellor, they can use a different kind of counseling skill such as paraphrasing and summarization of active listening skills and ask some opened-ended or closed-ended question to encourage the patient speak more to give a hand the patient so as to bring about beneficial changes and create a lot of outcome. Through the counseling, the nurse use counseling techniques in order to encourage the patient making positive changes in their life such as giving up smoking.
