Core Competency in Psychology The paper under review presents a study on how well the high school course in psychology prepares students for the first college course in psychology in college. The research is presented in a brief and articulate manner with the relevant statistics given for the significance of the study (Buskist, Culpepper, Daniels, DeBray, Payne, & Rossi, (n.d). The high school course in introductory psychology has been in existence for a longer traceable period with the number of students pursuing the course increasing over the years with the trend predictable for the future. With the rising number of students pursuing the course, psychologists have drawn attention to the course content and the manner of its structuring and teaching by teachers. Before administering the exam, a questionnaire was given to gain data about the students and to support the selection and categorization of the subjects. Multiple-choice questions were then conducted as an examination of standard concepts in introductory psychology. The possible hypothesis of the study based on what the research responded to is that taking a high school course in psychology is useful in preparing students for the college course in psychology. The dependent variable is the effectiveness of the college course in psychology whereas the independent variables include pursuing high school course and the topics covered in psychology. The sampling method used was non-probability purposive sampling technique, with only those who have or have not taken a high school course being eligible (Buskist, et al., n.d).
