Did you know that the book The Hunger Games, sold 100 million copies since 2008? Although The Hunger Games is an original idea, Suzzane Collins took heavy inspiration from many modern and historical stories and epics. The ideas and character designs found in The Hunger Games are there due to other current and historical fiction. The story The Hunger Games uses the Capitol to show a corrupt government that rules over others with drastic reaches in how lower classes are treated. It states in the text that, (referring to the hunger games)“this is the Capitol’s way of reminding us how we are at their mercy.”(Collins par10) The people living in the twelve districts know the evil premise of the hunger games but all they can do is sit around and watch. …show more content…
These are all examples of how the corrupt government in this story uses different living conditions and the barbaric hunger games to show power and make the residents of the 12 districts feel powerless. (put conclusion). The idea of tributes being forced into dangerous positions with death games to keep a community safe is a common theme between Theseus and the Minotaur, and the hunger games. The war with the minotaur pushed king df Atherns to go to extreme lengths to save to country and the war with the Capitol forces the 12 districts to send yearly tributes. These both show the desperation of the two communities to put citizens in danger for protection from the one threatening them. It states in the text that “Because if we did not send them, Minos would wage war on us and it is a war that we would not win”(line six Warwick Hutton). The war with the minotaur pushed the king of Athens to go to extreme ideas to save their country and the war with the capitol forces the 12 districts to send yearly …show more content…
This is important because it shows how the making of The Hunger Games uses plot points from other historical myths and events such as Theseus and The Minotaur. The way different social classes are treated and how they are strong together in the fictional story The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and in the informational text Patricians and Plebians by PBS. These connections are understandable while watching the movie to show a lack of rights and to show how the twelve districts are mistreated by the capitol. Both texts show that the lower class works for and makes goods and services for the higher classes. In the text “The Hunger Games” it both states that “This is the Capitol’s way of reminding us how we are at their mercy.”(par 10 Suzanne Collins)The author put this in the story to show a kind of forced hierarchy with better social classes being treated much better than the lower
The Hunger Games as a movie displays the social classes and differences between the districts and the Capitol. The portrayal of the love triangle is another example of social commentary. The Capitol has extravagant amounts of money and frivolous things that have no value. On the contrary, most of the Districts are very poor and barely have enough food to survive. Although, a fraction of the Districts is favored and given special treatment above the others, these Districts are called the Careers in the Games.
The Capitol is hurting people by forcing them to endure hard labor, and in return they don’t even get the bare minimum to survive: “Starvation’s not an uncommon fate in District 12. Who hasn’t seen the victims? Older people who can’t work. Children from a family with too many to feed” (Collins 24).The Capitol also hurt their society by brainwashing everyone into thinking the Hunger Games is a normal thing. In Susan Tan’s article "Burn with Us: Sacrificing Childhood in The Hunger Games,” she argues, “If the adult world impresses violence, sacrifice, and objectification onto childhood, if children grow up as tools of their parents' survival, if children are denied entry into the Symbolic because the adult world denies them voice, then those children will grow into the same adults, who can only sit by and enable as these same ideologies are impressed onto their children.”
The Hunger Games are held every year as punishment to the districts for rebelling. Which forces all of the 12 districts to reap
Collins juxtaposes that the government not only wishes to create fear from the districts but also fear rebellion from The Capitol and the districts causing the government to be a victim of self-interest. The Capitol uses the Games to assert their dominance over the districts as "It’s their way of reminding [the districts] how totally [they] are at their mercy" (pg21). Collins utilises symbolism in violence and fear being a tool for control with the Hunger Games representing the Capitol's ultimate power and authority. By creating an annual event where children are forced to fight to the death, the Capitol instils fear and control over the districts, preventing them from rebelling. The government uses the Games to appease the Capitol, the wealthy and influential city that controls the districts of Panem.
Someone with whom I can share my life" (Ellis, 1991, p. 326). However, The Capitol maintains power over the oppressed districts in The Hunger Games by holding annual Hunger Games in which children are forced to fight to the death. The Games aim to remind the districts of their weakness in the face of the Capitol's rule. The ruling elite uses its influence to keep control over the masses by manipulating and abusing them. According to Katniss, "the Capitol's control is like a virus, infecting everything with its poison" (Collins, 2008, p.
We spent one Hunger Games watching the players freeze to death at night. You could hardly see them because they were just huddled in balls and had no wood for fires or torches or anything. It was considered very anticlimactic in the Capitol, all those quiet, bloodless deaths” (p. 39). The people in the Capitol get bored because the death of the children isn’t exciting or gruesome enough. The society is so broken that all they want is a good show, completely disregarding the lives of others.
The Hunger Games is a science fiction book about a dystopian society which holds annual killing games that results in only one victor. Panem, a futuristic nation in North America, is split into 12 districts, which has their own specialties. This society is hated by the people because of the Capitol (also known as the government) not enforcing sanitation rules and the many deaths of children from ages of twelve to eighteen in the “death games.” The president of Panem is President Snow who makes decisions that would only benefit himself and the upper class. In this book, there are many examples of censorship which makes the people angry because the government is hiding it from them.
The capitol believe that they are in charge because they are more wealthier than those raised in the districts. As a teenager I learnt the idea of equal rights and that both societies should be treated evenly, because if the segregation continues we can no longer call ourselves human, as we think we are better than a similar being to us. There is no perfect utopia in any world, even in the hunger games. Those living in the capitol may believe that they are superior but in the end they will probably be rebelled against and crushed as a society. There is no perfect utopia for anyone.
The Hunger Games draft kids against their will to kill each other. Power is a big part of The Hunger Games the capitol people have a lot. In the novel, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins the theme of power progresses throughout the story for the main character Katniss Everdeen who starts powerless but then hides her intentions from the capitol people and takes control of the winners of The Hunger Games. The Social Class Conflicts Through The Hunger Games The Hunger Games takes place in a futuristic society composed of twelve districts run by the Capitol. Every year one male and female tribute from each district will be put in an arena to fight to the death until one person remains. The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins depicts the struggles and countless endeavours of the proletariat as they fight to the death not only in the arena but navigating life post-games. This is shown through the false consciousness of the privileged, the manipulation and upperhand of the bourgeoisie, and the systems in place guaranteeing the cycle of poverty for the proletariats. The hunger games is a glorified gladiatorial game where only those lucky and
The capital has more power then one can handle. Imagine being controlled by one person, One entity. In The Hunger Games, the capital abuses the other 12 districts for resources and labor. Throughout the book we see how the lives of the other districts go on and how they struggle.
The quotation “The hunger games are a reminder of what happens when we rebel against the capitol" implements foreshadowing to postulate that rebelling against the capitol is a heinous and dangerous act that will result in severe consequences. The Hunger Games themselves serve as a metaphor for the consequences of defying a totalitarian government. This statement underscores the significance of the games to the capitol in maintaining control over the districts. The game serves as a warning to anyone who attempts to invoke or confront the capitol, or even goes against the capitol's rules. The use of foreshadowing and symbolism emphasises the importance of obedience and the consequences of rebellion which is dystopian behaviour.
