In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, three witches tell Scottish general Macbeth he is going to be the King of Scotland. Macbeth’s wife pushes him to kill the King, which he does and Macbeth becomes the King of Scotland. However the killing doesn’t stop there, Macbeth continues to kill out of paranoia. For Putin this was Boris Nemtsov. Nemtsov was a strong public adviseary of Putin’s and even served as Prime Minister of Russia under President Boris Yeltsin. Many thought Nemtsov was to be Yeltsin’s successor, but instead Putin rose to power and Yeltsin eventually became a campaign leader exposing corruption in the Kremlin (Adamson). In 2015, five days before Yeltsin was set to lead a protest against Russia’s attack on eastern Ukraine, an FSB agent shot him yards from the Kremlin (Adamson). Macbeth’s Boris Nemtsov is Banquo. Macbeth has Banquo murdered by a hit team, just like Putin had the FSB squad kill Yeltsin. For example, Macbeth says “It is concluded: Banquo, thy soul’s flight, / If it find heaven, must find it out to-night” (3.1.139-140). Right after they told him about the prophecies, Macbeth was told that he did in fact become Thane of Cawdor. Since that prophecy came true, he began to wonder if the prophecy about him becoming King would come true. When Lady Macbeth found out about the prophecies, Lady Macbeth convinced and influenced Macbeth to kill the King so that the prophecy could come true. Macbeth was reluctant to kill the king, but that reluctance was soon overcome by the sheer determination for power that grew inside of him.
As a result, Macbeth, after being heavily influenced by his wife and his own greed, kills King Duncan. Joseph Stalin and Macbeth have similar traits when they become leaders. The leader of the Soviet Union Joseph Stalin can be compared to Macbeth because of the evil ways they both portray. At the start of the play, Macbeth is well respected among King Duncan’s army. He encounters three witches who give him a prophecy that he will become king. At first, Macbeth believes that fate and the natural order will lead him to become king, and he doesn’t have to do anything. Macbeth was the Thane of Cawdor but he wanted to be king more than anything. The witches had told him that he would one day be king but he did not know how long that would take so when King Duncan had been invited to stay the night at his house he exclaimed that “My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical,/ shakes so my single state of man/ that function is smother 'd in surmise,/ and nothing is but what is not”(1.3.52-55). He felt that if he were to kill King Duncan that he would have a better chance of becoming king. Though the witches had never told him that someone would need to get murdered for him to become king, his ambition tempted him to quicken this process the only way he felt he could. This was the beginning of the murderer that the witches had created with the fortune telling.
Unlike with the murder of Duncan, Macbeth lacks hesitation and says, "To act in safety. There is none but he Whose being I do fear; and under him My genius is rebuked, as it is said Mark Antony's was by Caesar" (3.1 85). Banquo's concern that the Three Witches' prophecy will come true causes him to question whether or not Macbeth murdered King Duncan. Due to Banquo's rising suspicions, Macbeth fears him above all others. Therefore, Macbeth hired assassins to kill Banquo and his son, Fleance.
Power is always coveted in any society and the world of Shakespeare’s Macbeth is no different.
